I'm thinking about transitioning from a vest to a hip/lumbar pack. Would this be a good pack to start with? I have chest waders, but rarely go in above my waist. What do you do when you need to go through deeper water, just remove the pack and carry it?

I spent a lot of time trying to decide between this pack and the Patagonia Stealth Hip Pack. Both are fantastic products. This pack gives you a little more room than the Patagonia and is a little more comfortable to wear (though if you're wearing waders, it won't matter a whole lot...more an issue if dry wading). A major plus of this pack is the zippers - heavy duty and easy to open and close. The Patagonia pack has smaller zippers and they are often more difficult to open and close. I also like that the shoulder strap pad is fixed in place on this pack whereas it slides on the Patagonia and often moves into a non useful area of the strap. The one thing I wish this pack had that the Patagonia has is the small zip pouches on the waste belt. Perfect for keeping floatant and other often used items in without having to spin the pack.

Can't go wrong with either pack. Huge fan.

Switched to this pack last summer from a pack/vest style pack. I originally thought I needed to carry more, but this pack keeps me more organized plus it has plenty of room for all the gear I need on me while guiding. One of the best things about this pack is it keeps you cool. Fishing vests and other packs can be hot to wear in the summer, but this pack leaves your upper body free and cool. Also, you can get around great when this is all you have on - climbing under/over things and hiking longer distances is a breeze in this. Also, anything made by fishpond has bomber zippers and fabrics. Holds up very well.

okay...buy this pack for it's day-trip perfect amount of space, (cough) "water bottle" holders, and back-saving hip or chest versatility. It's just an added bonus that pretty much anything Fishpond produces makes you look like an instant pro. Well worth the few extra bucks for a dependable, well-constructed lumbar pack.

Vests are so last year.
