Thanks to its raised tip and tail and solid I-Beam construction , the 2011 Fischer Watea 98 Alpine Ski offers a delicious mix of powdery playfulness and big line stability. The raised tip also incorporates the new Powder Hull technology, which features a ‘hulled’, or pointed, base that slices through the snow like an action-seeking battleship. A 98cm waist keeps you floating on top of the nipple-deep fluff but isn’t too heavy or bulky for a tour into the backcountry.
Early rise tip and tail allows switch pow landings so you can throw some spins during your next run through the mini-golf backcountry zone
Early rise tip also prevents hooking and grabbing while skiing crud and chopped powder
Traditional sidecut and medium turn radius suits aggressive skiers that weave in and out of the trees hunting for powder when it’s not snowing
Two carbon fiber I-Beams run the length of the ski to provide a solid and smooth ride over less-than-perfect snow
Sandwich sidewall construction unifies the milled wood core between two ABS sidewalls for a medium flex that doesn’t feel like a wet noodle underfoot
Bottom Line: A poppy, mid-fat twintip ready for resort pow and backcountry expression.
I've been riding these things since November 2010, with about 20 days on the so far and I've got so many great things to say, w/ very few negatives. First off these things destroy the afternoon crud like none other. You put mini moguls in front of them and they can bash through without hesitation. The powderhull really does get your tips out of the snow, and aides turning. I've had zero problems turning these things on piste or off.
The negative comes when the temps drop below freezing, and you've got an icy mountain, the camber just doesnt slice through like a traditional carving ski would. You can make it down better than someone on a full rocker ski, but I dont enjoy these icy days. The other negative is in the laminated graphics. While they look awesome fresh out of the box, I've never had a topsheet get so destroyed w/ so few days on the mountain. These things look like I've used them for 3 seasons. In 22 days I've none had any incidents that should have busted the graphics like this- something to think about for folks who cant/wont buy new skis every season.

I love these skis. They shred all over the mountain. I've skied them in conditions from moderate powder to pure ice and they hold up to it all. They are light enough to be a touring ski if you wanted but they're still heavy enough and stiff enough to charge big lines like a champ. Not bad in the bumps and woods either. These things turn on a dime. The only loss of a star comes from it not having quite as much rocker as I had expected. If you ski the East look no further. As an instructor I'm on them all the time and I couldnt be happier.
How much does it weight the 176 version. I am considering this ski for touring (w/marker F12) and I wonder about the convenience of the resultant weight (?)
i own a watea 94, the construction sounds the same, save for an early rise tip and tail, which wouldn't effect the weight very much. having said that, the watea was the lightest ski i own in similar size and dimensions. i would worry about float with this ski if you get in really deep stuff, but weight will not be an issue
