While your friends flop around on their edge-less XC twigs, you’ll poach the best lines on the Fischer E99 Crown Skis. These backcountry touring skis’ full-length metal edges instill the confidence you need when the snow changes from powder to mank mid-tele turn. Fischer’s Mountain Crown scales bite on ascents without sacrificing gliding performance, and air channels in the body create an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.

Bottom Line: Glide down the hill in perfect control.

Don't glide well

By:
December 24, 2010

I weigh 185, and tried the 12009 210s. I ski up and down off trail. They are great going uphill, but the pattern grabs going downhill and on the flats, where they are very slow. I spoke with Fischer about this. They haven't changed the design in years, and are moving away from the traditional length ski. I think a 215 would be perfect, but they don't make it.

I am going to try another pair just to see if I may have skied on a lemon. I will post a follow-up.

MPS here again. Ok, I hot-waxed these skiis, and voila, I would now rate them 5 stars. These are the Fischers I know and love. They glide well on the flat, and the pattern allows me to climb well. I bought the 2009s on closeout, so my sense is the bases were a bit dry and my previous attempts to wax were not sufficient.

When I did the math, I was shocked to realize that the skis I still like but need to be replaced are Fisher E99s more than 20 years old. How do the new compare to those ancient sticks?

I used to ski on the old waxable double camber E99's and they were fast on the flats and downhills, but difficult to climb with. Just recently I asked a friend if I could try his 2-3 year old E99's. These newer nowax were a bit small for me (205's and I would choose 210's), and in some older icy snow they were very nice. A bit slower than what I was skiing (210 Madshus Glitterand waxable), but that is to be expected. As a test, I held them bottom to bottom and the reduction in camber from the old E99's was huge. I could easily, with one hand close the skis together. I could never do that with the old mongo double cambered E99's. Bottom line is, I am going to purchase a pair, but I am going in with the knowledge that they will be a slower no wax ski, with much better grip. Hope this helps.

See my post (MPS). I would stick with the E99s. My sense is that you should buy them now as they will likely stop making this more traditional ski. I hope not. Karhu and Madshus do not compare with regard to glide and overall performance. REI outlet has a 2009 for 224.00. Note, per Fischer, they have not changed anything on the ski for the past 5-6 years. I talked to them directly.

Solid skis

These are a great the perfect ski for a select group of skiers. These are great for messing around in a couple feet of ungroomed snow and exploring your nearby woods. They have a wood core and will hold up for many many years. They are more traditionally-lengthed skis so they will may be taller than you might think. Make sure also, that you include approximately how much your pack will weight while you are using them. The full metal edge is really nice and the scales have improved markedly over the years. They are shown with BC bindings and you should probably get BC bindings for control.
