- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Decided to purchase this shirt based off prior experience that I had from donning and hiking in a short-sleeve metal-button ExOfficio shirt, the name of which is eluding me at the present moment.
In any case, I was floored not only by the durability of this shirt, but by the comfort and fit. From the moment that I slid this puppy over my shoulders, I knew I had made a solid choice for upper body wear.
The venting that is sewn into the shirt from the bottom hem up to the cuff around the wrist is magnificent, and never once ripped or tore even when being thrashed about in innumerable washing machines, or snagging on sharper brush when having to do a bit of trail blazing.
While backpacking, there were not plenty of opportunities to utilize the chest pockets often, but when I needed them, they were capacious enough to store gewgaws, doodads, cash, an ipod, sunglasses, power bars, and the like; nothing substantial, but things that one might like to have close at hand, for whatever reason. One primary factor that I truly reveled in was the fact that the pockets were not totally in the way of your pack chest strap. Certainly, there was some slight overlap, but nothing major enough to get you heated.
Overall, the preeminent factor that impressed me about this shirt was the fact that despite hiking over 1,200 miles in it, I can honestly say I would have to really study it to find any sort of staining from salt, sweat, or color bleeding from other fabrics that was a big problem with other shirts in the past. Small ones probably exist, but this is one incredible combination of style and fabric that went into the design and production of this shirt.
Regarding casual use, perhaps lounging on the beach while someone feeds you skinned grapes and fans you with palm fronds, definitely workable. The roll-sleeves are absolutely clutch, and made for a quick and easy conversion when I got hustling, I intend on getting another one or two of these to have for when I'm not hiking.
Worked great to keep me cool in the sun
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
Bought several to take on a June trip to the Caribbean. Light and breezy enough to keep me from overheating, but enough fabric to keep me from broiling. Any breeze at all and it wicked sweat away and stayed pretty dry. Coming back to buy a less colorful option for summer fishing.
Sizing was ok for me; I normally wear a 16.5 x 35"shirt (vary between L and XL depending on brand) and the L fit me perfectly in this shirt.
Same Ex Quality, Fit A Bit Different
The ExOfficio Reef Runner Lite Shirt - Long-Sleeve is your standard fare from Ex-officio, that is to say it's better than most of the rest out there for style with comfort. The nylon weave is thin enough to make it feel like you aren't wearing a shirt (and this is long sleeve here), but was very surprised at the durability. I also like the zip pockets for the chest.
The fit left me a bit puzzled though as I am usually a L size with Ex-O but the large was way too long in the torso. I'm 5'11" with a 33" inseam so I do have a bit of a shorter torso, but wider shoulders. If this is your size, size down a bit and see if the tightness in the chest/shoulders is tolerable or not.
ExOfficio Reef Runner Lite Shirt - LS
Whether you fly fish in Idaho or deep-sea fish off the coast of New Jersey, the Ex Officio Men's Reef Runner Lite Button-Down Long-Sleeve Shirt protects you from the sun and keeps you cool in hot weather. The quick-drying nylon Reef Runner Shirt provides UPF-30 sun protection and wicks your perspiration away from your skin. Ultralite mesh underarm and side panels let air circulate to keep you from overheating. Ex Officio gave the Reef Runner zippered security pockets so you can carry your fishing license or other important documents. Roll-up sleeve tabs let you convert this long-sleeve shirt into a short-sleeve one.
Just what I needed
- Gender: Male
I got the Agave shirt and really like it. I needed something lite weight to take with me on my trip in late May through early June. This shirt looks good and is very lite weight. I wore it to work the other day and got nothing but compliments on the color and the look. I even had someone ask where I got it. The shirt does run a little big. I first got an XL but had to return it for a L. But other then that the shirt has been great.
The shirt to wear when you'd rather be w/o but don't want to burn
This shirt is very nice. Same with other reveiwers, I found it to run a little larger. I wear a 15.5 - 32/33 dress shirt and the medium here fits big on me. Not so much I'd trade it for a small though.
The material is excellent and super light weight. Its almost see-through, so if you don't like that, this isn't for you. As the title of my review says, this is my go-to shirt for situations where I'd rather not have a shirt on, but don't want to get sun-burned and/or don't want my pack on bare skin.
Nice shirt, runs big
Very nice fabric, but runs big. I would recommend you go down a size. Not the same with all ex-officio shirts, though. I ordered another one and the medium fit just fine. It doesn't say in the description, but there is a 1 inch stripe of almost see-through fabric running down both outside seams of the chest area. A little too weird for my tastes, but I'm sure it would keep you cool! I am returning it for this reason.
Great All-Around Shirt
Great shirt, keeps me cool in all conditions. Would be a 5 but the sizing is a bit off in my opinion. I think the cut runs large. I am a medium in everything but the small fit my chest and shoulders... the sleeves are a little short but I can live with that since they are rolled up 99% of the time. If you are on the cusp, size down!
