Thank you Backcountry.com and ExOfficio for hand-selecting me to review the Nomad Shorts for the benefit of the Backcountry.com community.
The ExOfficio Nomads are the most comfortable item of clothing I own at present. Idaho is having a heatwave like I’ve never seen and I’ve been living in these shorts. From the office to the trail, in the kayak and the helicopter, fishing and grilling – these shorts are perfect!
The fabric is soft to the touch and very lightweight. Water beads on the surface and the shorts are surprisingly stain-resistant. I had the Nomads on for probably half an hour when Kimber put enormous muddy paw prints on each leg, they disappeared after a few expletives and some frantic brushing. I also managed to smear engine oil on them during a preflight; the stain was gone when I got home. As far as I’m concerned, the fabric is imbued with magical stain-defying properties heretofore unseen by mankind.
ExOfficio gives you POCKETS! The paucity of pockets on women’s clothing is enough to drive me to drink and if I don’t have a pocket for my flask I get pissed (the drunk kind of pissed AND the angry kind). I’m kidding, sort of.
In all seriousness, as a person who refuses to carry a purse, I appreciate well-designed pockets. The front pockets are blessedly normal, I can actually stand with my hands in my pockets and I’ve carried my longest pocket knives comfortably.
There are two other pockets on the legs. The left pocket has a small Velcro closure and is clearly designed for a cell phone. My iphone 5s fits easily, even in its bulky Lifeproof case. The right pocket is a bit larger and has a zipper. I’ve been putting my wallet in there and sometimes my keys too. I tried my Mom’s iphone 6+ in the left pocket but it was too large (she has a UAG folio case), it rides well in the right pocket but I can’t close the zipper.
The waistband is outstanding; it’s lined with soft microfiber/fleece and it’s really, really comfortable. I worried that the fleece might be a sweat magnet but the waistband has stayed dry and soft. Speaking of the waistband, these shorts ride low, not crazy low but they sit comfortably a few inches below my belly button.
ExOfficio has accurate fit notes on their website. I’m wearing these Nomads in a size 4 but I’m wearing size 6 Ziwa BugsAway Convertible Pants because the waist on the Ziwas is much higher and the overall fit is just a bit different.
No gravity Nomad
Up a tree AND the creek...
The ExOfficio Nomad Shorts are true to their name, perfect for wherever you may wander.
You can see the right-hand zippered pocket in this pic, it's larger than the drop-in pocket on the left.
I'm carrying a Spyderco Delica, it rides comfortably in the front pocket of the Nomads.
Pockets, lovely pockets.
ExOfficio gives you real, functional pockets while maintaining a feminine fit.
The left hand pocket has a tiny Velcro closure, just enough to keep the pocket from gaping. My iphone 5s fits easily, even in its Lifeproof case.
