Versatile pants for adventurous travel.

Here they are on top of a ridge overlooking Lake Victoria. I'm 5'10" and 205#
Very Nice... but wish belt was removable
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
Picked up a couple pairs of these for a trip to Tanzania and wound up very pleased with them. I'm a photographer and I found the pocket configuration surprisingly useful -- with a couple small "special" pockets that worked perfectly for lens cloths and caps.
Never felt hot, and the pants went through sink washing with good results.
The material is very lightweight and feels good. Dirt brushes off easily too.
I found that overall they have a slimmer (but not "slim") fit than other pants of this type. I'd say the waist and thigh sizes run on the small side of true. Still, I didn't feel like my movement was restricted at all.
-- The belt is not removable. I'll be modifying these pants to fix that, but it meant that the belt was not available for us on other pants, I had to carry more belts, and I could not deploy the belt as a useful piece of webbing when I needed to strap something down.
-- Even the regular size seems longer than advertised. This is more of an FYI than a complaint since the extra length kept the bugs out of my ankles.
-- The boot removal zippers are on the inside of the leg, which is just dumb.
Especially when they are on sale, these are a good choice.
Nio Amphi Convertible Pant
Nio Amphi Convertible Pant
Protection is the Nio Amphi Convertible Pant's specialty. A built-in removable belt and Indestructible Button System are durable and keep them where you want them. UPF 50+ Sun Guard repels harmful rays. The Durable Water Repellent-treated nylon fabric dries faster to keep you comfortable and allows for easy washing. The full inseam gusset lets the Nio Amphi move with you, and multiple security zip pockets keep items safe.
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: Runs large
Too long. Also the ankle zipper is on the inside, which is clumsy feeling and they knock against each other. Shame the cargo pockets aren't zippered instead of velcro.
Another fine ExOff product - almost
I had the same pants, but not convertible. So, I ordered the convertibles in the same size. The pants fit just like the regular Nio Amphi, but leg length is about an inch longer. With some additional sewing (an annoyance), they'll work well and as intended.
Are these pants waterproof? Not just water...
Are these pants waterproof? Not just water resistant, but water proof. I'm looking for a waterproof pair of convertibles. Any suggestions?
Hey Justin, thanks so much for your question. These are not waterproof, they are only water resistant. We actually didn't have much that would be waterproof and have the convertible option for you. I did find these pants which are highly water resistant (more so than this pair).
These are great pants, but they're far from what you're looking for. Even their water resistance from the DWR coating will quickly wear off after a few washings. That's true for all styles, in all brands...nobody has invented the magic bullet. Basically, waterproof convertible pants don't exist...anywhere. I'm a person that has worn convertibles almost exclusively for many years. I do a lot of research on my choices. Water repellency and insect control don't even enter into those choices anymore...it's that they're convertible and hold up well. Right now, in my opinion, the single best convertible pants going are the Kuhl Liberators. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Lexi and Phil. Both of your responses were very helpful!
Very tough, and not hot at all
Very strong material for such a lightweight fabric, fast drying, its gots de look, very cool in the summer, awesome colors(nylon is hard as hell to dye) the lighter color looks better than the darker. Soo... better than de cotton merda I see everywhere,Women look at them too, I think they are wondering where did such a cool pair of pants came from, because you can't buy them here, or something else.
comfortable, very lightweight, plenty of well placed pockets, length of shorts just right, and they don't make my butt look fat. 5 stars! Truly good backpacking pants.Ken
We have gone through so many zip-out pants. I have ordered so many zip-out pants & returned them. I took the hubby to the bc warehouse to try many on & these were the favs. They look great & love the longer short.
NMHiker: Yur right. I have the convertible...
NMHiker: Yur right. I have the convertible and the straight leg and I had also tried out the EX-Offici Bugs Away pant and that's the one with the permethrin. Its required pesticide label does say do not wash with other clothes. Military people are allowed to do but not civilians. I learned that from Ex-officio. I didn't like the smell of the Bugs Away pant literally and right out of the pkg. Returned them. Say hi to the Bandaliers for me! The EX-
Officio Neo Amphi Convertible pant is great looking, fast drying, durable, well-crafted, great pockets, true to size. I'm not in love with the teflon idea because it washes out and goes somewhere into the environment, so maybe they could make the pant without it and we can live with the stains. So does the teflon. We trek, hike, climb for jeez sake...don't need to be worsening it. They're just gimmicks to sell the pant that are probably great without them....
I would think it would have to do with the water-stain resistant treatment to keep that from getting into your other clothes. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. These were the ones that fit my husband the best & I would have washed them with everything else before reading this.
But the natural pesticide washes out in a short period of time. I would not assume they are using pyrethrin, it is just too weak. I know this if you wash them in hot water you will damage the coating. I spilled paint all over my paints and had to wash them in hot water. Now they are not that waterproof but no paint at all.
Test, these aren't the pants that are insect repellent. The insect repellent is a different pair. I know I own both types.

If I could give these six stars I would. For the price you really can't get a better convertible pant. The material is thin and light but do well in the brush; they also provide excellent wicking. After several days of hiking I had little if any chapping. Also, I have found that many convertible pants don't zip off easily and are difficult to put back on - this is not the case for these. I was recommended these from a fly fishing friend who had a pair for 4 years and can't be happier. If you are looking for a convertible pant; BUY THESE.
These are really comfortable and super lightweight pants. These will get a ton of use come warmer weather. The pocketing is excellent, roomy and lots of them. I really like the zip closed back pockets for the extra security on trails. Nice length when the lags zip off. Nice integrated belt plus zippers on the lower legs, nice for changing to shorts without removing shoes. I'm 6'1", 190 lbs and the size 34 had a really nice leg length, alot of these pants have slightly shorter inseams, this one is nice and long.
I just got these and they feel great! I like the zippered pockets and the leg bottoms. I wear a 36W 30inseam and though I thought they might be too long, they fit me just right with shoes on.
Great material and relativity easy to convert pants to shorts. Wear them out climbing and sailing and are great for both (the waterproofing comes in handy for the later). Even makes for a good quick drying swim suit after the long races. They are a bit long for me but not enough that it has been a problem
these pants are great.the material is light and cool and the fit is perfect.belt looks crappy(though it works fine) but i own a belt so not fussed about that.the hems can be pulled tight which i love as it helps keep tics etc from my "soft spots" when in the bush.overall...a fine pair of pants.
"If ya buy shite, you'll buy twice".
I really wish these came in Short, Regular, Tall versions because they fit well in the legs. Really comfy material so I hated to return them.
