Description

Go long, or short when you head into the woods.

In a flash, the ExOfficio Men's Bugsaway Ziwa Convertible pants transform from a pair of lightweight hiking pants, to a pair of breezy hiking shorts. Head up into the mountains for a quick dip in the river, and by the time you hit the trail again, the quick-drying Ziwa will feel right as rain. An Insect Shield fabric treatment fends off mosquitos, gnats, no-see-ums, and the like, so you can return home without looking like Mother Nature's pincushion. Don't sweat the sun either, because the Ziwa sports Sun Guard fabric that provides some additional protection against harmful UV rays that would damage your skin.

I recently considered the bugs-away ziwa pant, but the insecticide permethrin used in treating the pants bothered me, so I checked with the company that produces it, Insect Sheild. The rep told me that an EPA regulatory pesticide label was included with the tags on the pant, which says the bugs-away clothing should be washed separately. He said the EPA has allowed this treated clothing to be used by the military for some years but that Insect Shield had asked the EPA for permission to remove the pesticide label. The EPA agreed,so the pesticide warming was removed from clothing for the military, but not for civilians. The rep told me that stateside military personnel also wash bugs-away clothing with other clothing at home. Go figure. The difference for military personnel is probably based on need in combat scenarios, but how would it look if the label said, Okay for combat scenarios, but not in the states. I wonder if someone can shed light on this? Thanks! As I understand it the clothing should be washed separately because it sheds permethrin to other clothes.

I have owned these for several years now. They have gone to Canada (Quetico) on canoe trips, backpacking in Colorado, Argentina, even one great trip to Alaska and all over CO, UT and WY fishing. They dry super fast and I have not had single tick in years of hiking through tall grass and brush. I can't imagine going in the woods without them! No rips or stains, simply great.

Are these pretty true to size? I'm 5"10 210 and wear a 34 waist.

They really are a nice fit. I am also a 34" waist with a 31" inseam and these fit me very well.

I didn't buy the pants for their insect repelling qualities. I bought them simply because I am constantly in search of convertible pants that I can use for work. I look for comfort. These pants are very comfortable. I cannot have velcro closures or expandable cargo pockets (they snag on too many things). I also need to wear a heavy belt. I do not like integrated belts. The pants wear very well (bomb proof) and the more they're washed the better they get. They dry quickly.

Please don't change them! Every time, it seems, I find a good pant, the manufacturer feels compelled to "update" the product. They are simple and effective, functional. There is brilliance in the basics.

After failing to find the right size with the Mountain Hardware pants, I tried these. They are great, although I havent worn them on a hike I can say they are well made, light weight, fit great and dont give the wearer (me) the douchey diaper butt look that many other elastic waist pants have.
Also the short stops just above the knee so no trouble hiking up hill.
