Great all level shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 6' 0"
    Weight: 160 lbs

Climbing for 9 years. Gym, sport, trad, bigwall... not so much on the bouldering No reason to climb in anything expensive in the gym-- seriously, even on the techy vertical 12s, this preforms just as well as the 180$ downturned fancy ones. Even outside, this is my goto shoe, even on projects. I've got a pair of 'all day' TC pros, my single pitch scarpa Feroce's, too tight Evolve Pontas, WAY too tight sportiva muira lace ups, and a few others, and they all just sit in the closet once I figured out that I lose no performance and gain all the comfort with the cheapo defys.

To defeat the evolve death smell, the ultimate secret: wear socks (GASP). size for it, and embrace the judging stares. I've found thin cotton ones work great, synthetics tend to slip around a bit. No smell, ever.

Too small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I ordered my street shoe size.....I couldn't fit my foot in the left shoe (my left foot is slightly bigger) and couldn't even bear to stand on the right shoe I did get on. I'll return and plus up a full size and see how it goes.

Great shoes that came through for me.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I was concerned about the sizing, but got an excellent fit ordering at my actual size. Tight, but not painful. My second comcern was gear confidence. But never felt concerned for their hold once I was climbing. After two hours of bouldering with them, the only time I noticed any discomfort was on the gym floor.

Great shoes that came through for me.

I am literally a beginner, as in one day of gear assisted climbing. I'm starting in a gym but plan to transition to outdoor come better weather. Will this shoe handle that transition well?

Best Answer Responded on

I would think these would be a great shoe to start out with. Chances are these are going to last longer than many shoes as your transitioning to outdoor. Anything too agressive is going to wear out too quickly so I'd recommend these or something like them till you get a little more comfortable.

If you're just starting out climbing, these are the shoes to go with. It is very common for folks to start climbing and blow through their first pair of shoes due to bad footwork. I have an older pair of defy's that I climbed in all last winter in the gym and used for a few months outside on sport and trad climbs. I've put a lot of routes of them and used them in the gym other day since I'm trying to save the mileage on a pair of slippers that I have. But my Defy's are about to blow out in the toes after TONS of climbing, so I more than got my monies worth.

If you plan to get into outdoor climbing shortly after starting up in the gym, then it might be a good idea to opt for this laced pair rather than the standard velcro Defy's that most folks get for the gym.

These shoes are extremely comfortable and grippy. Great for the gym but I still need to test them outdoors.

Great beginner shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I climbed in these shoes for 1.5 years in a gym environment only. 6 months at 1-2 times a week of top rope climbing and 1 year at 5 times a week bouldering. Wore a hole in both toes about 1 week ago.
Very comfortable shoe! I wear a size 9 shoe and I fitted these at an 8.5 for a tighter fit.
I will probably buy another pair for climbing at the gym but I am also looking for a more aggressive shoe for bouldering.

Responded on

I take it the choice to use a size 8.5 was good after all? I wear the same size, but have wide feet. So I'm skeptical about trying that for myself.

Responded on

It was a comfortable shoe I could wear them all day with no pain. I would try them on in the store and stand in them for at least
5 minutes to see how they feel on your feet.

Taken just prior to rapp'n some 120' down to the next rappel station just below North Rabbit Ear summit, Las Cruces, NM. Shoes made the downward journey much easier to get a grip on.

great for your first shoe

I run a climbing club at my school and to all the noobies I recommend shoes like these, we also rent them out so it gives them a chance to try them on cheap ( a big factor for your first shoe) not to aggressive, a lace up system for the outdoors and over all comfortable. get these or something like these until you figure out what you want more of from your climbing shoe.

Great beginner shoe.

First of all I believe this shoe is identical to the Evolv Defy velcro. This was my first pair of climbing shoes and they preformed great. Sure there are better shoes on the market, but these are the perfect beginner shoe. These are crazy comfortable, very durable, and will preform great on most routes. Honestly, if you are new to climbing there is no reason to spend the money on a shoe that you can not utilize. This is a great introductory pair of rock climbing shoes.

Great beginner shoe.

Same shoe, just with laces. Same delicious Evolv smell after three weeks of use.

Are these mens sizes?

Are these mens sizes?

Responded on

yes they're mens, if you're looking for womens check out the electra lace shoe, its the womens version of the defy

Responded on

I just ordered a pair of these in a size 7.0 because I am female and wear a size 8.5, and because i was told they were mens sizes. The shoes were much too small, couldn't fit my foot in at all, and my sive seven footed friend could fit in them perfectly shoes, so NO, THESE ARE NOT IN MENS SIZES. THEY ARE IN WOMENS SIZES.
