Warm jacket

By:

I seriously must be nuts to buy a $500 softshell jacket but I did. The jacket in black looks great, feels great and is super warm. I'm 6'2" 225lbs and the XXL is borderline tight on me. These run very small so take that into consideration. The jacket's great but spending $500 .... I need help!!

I think you'll find the two jackets very comparable. The R4 lining of the Northwall makes it about as warm as a high-loft softshell can get. If you're not warm enough in the Northwall, you may want to consider trying a jacket with 60-100g Primaloft insulation.

Total Junk

I'm writing this update as a separate review because it is on the second jacket I've owned (in less than a month). I've had it for about a week, and the seam tape is coming off. I had planned to try to use it for the season, but who wants to go skiing with seam tape flapping in the wind. I would stay away from this jacket!

The seam taping issue was probably a batch problem, not a symptom of the entire line. That would explain why you got two dud jackets and other people have had no problems. That said, it's pretty poor quality control for a jacket this expensive, but I imagine this is a known issue and has been rectified. As we can see, it's no good for a company to be marred by this sort of problem.

I should probably check out the North Face. I've been waiting to see if Arcteryx was going to put a power pro piece on the market.

LG, I wish I had had the time to try again, and give feedback to Eider, but by the time I returned the jacket I was too fed up. It's too bad. The design was perfect. It was the build quality that was so bad.

Did you give the North Face Kishtwar a try? I have it and am a huge fan.

sorry to hear you are having some problems with your jacket. I work for the company and own this jacket myself and have not had a problem. I have worn it in all kinds of conditions, have stuffed it into a pack on numerous occasions and have washed it once. Eider will definitely want to work with you on resolving this issue and to also provide important feedback to R & D.

wsumarine2406771,
I am very disappointed to hear of the problems you have had with your Eider Power Pro jacket. I own this jacket for nearly one year, have used it in a wide range of winter weather conditions, washed the jacket, and have not had one problem with the quality of the construction. Hopefully you might give Eider another chance some other time as they really make a nice product.

Can anyone tell me more about this brand? How is their build quality? It's a pretty slick looking jacket, but it's price makes Arc'teryx pieces look like a bargain.

Eider was founded by a tailor in 1962 and they still make their patterns at their headquaters in France; this is apparent in how the jackets fit and the details that go into them. They are big into mountaineering (this piece is from that collection)as well as snowsports. Eider has some of the best quaality, well thought through products out there.

So I ordered the blue size L. I'm 6' 3", 175. It fit nicely width and length wise, but the arms are not made for someone my height. The other purchaser said it fit similar to Arc'teryx soft shells. I would say that is correct, except for the sleeves. I've never had a problem with Arc'teryx sleeves. I always wear size L. These sleeves were 1-2 inches too short. I ordered an XL. I'll post when it arrives. In the meantime, the blue goes back.

wsumarine2406771,

Thanks for your question. Eider is a French brand from the same family as the Millet and Lafuma brands. The Eider product is the snowsports cousin of the more alpine and mountaineering product you will find from Millet. The finish and build of Eider outerwear is as good as anything you will find out in the market. I hope this is helpful for you. Enjoy.

Uggh

I'm absolutely disgusted with this jacket. I've hardly worn it - nothing extreme at all. All I've used it for is taking my dogs on walks on a few windy/cold days, and it's already coming apart. The seamtape along the main zipper is coming off in multiple locations. I'm trying to decide whether to give Eider the chance to make it right by making a warranty claim, or whether to just return it and be done with it. It's too bad, the concept was perfect, and the power shield pro highloft is amazing.

Update - 3 days later - more seamtape coming off. It's only been sitting in my closet. Piece of junk!

Update II - I exchanged the item. The new one came two days ago. I can already tell where the seam tape is poorly bonded along the main zipper. I know the tape will come off (it's just starting to), but I'm going to go ahead and keep the jacket for now. It's too bad, the design is fantastic - nothing beats power shield pro high loft. I wish Arcteryx had something like this. Conclusion: there's something wrong with Eider's quality control, at least on this production line. I'm going to use it through this season, and keep my fingers crossed Arcteryx comes out with an equivalent for next year. Boo to Eider. BTW, Backcountry is great!

You must've gotten a lemon, exchange it.. this is the first I've heard about any Eider gear having a quality issue. Eider has a great rep and they guarantee their stuff for 3 years.

Ok...someone got any info and details on this jacket, especially sizing and performance. I am seriously considering this jacket. Also, what's the pure blue like in color. It seems very neon bright type of blue. Also - how does this compaire to the Kishtwar (TNF) and the Narvik (Norrona). This jacket is much more expensive than either of those Power Shield Pro jackets and I'm trying to figure out why and if its worth the higher price.

Rocky Mountain Goat,

Thanks for your question. The Eider Power Pro jacket is killer piece in my opinion. It runs on the fitted/alpine side of the spectrum. I am 5'10" 135 lbs, and I wear the medium. My experience with the Powershield Pro fabric has been outstanding in a variety of skiing/mountain conditions, outside of a Canadian deluge, where I needed a Gore Tex poncho, not a softshell. The Royal Blue color is bold. I would not say that it is neon blue, but what you would expect a strong Royal Blue to look like.

Eider Power Pro versus The North Face Kishtwar & Norrona Narvik Powershield Pro jackets :

vs The North Face Kishtwar - Very similar feature set. The Eider Power Pro has two hand pockets and one smaller upper arm pocket. The TNF Kishtwar has two large front pockets (enough room for skins), and one Napoleon pocket. Hood design and volume on both the Power Pro and the Kisthwar are similar. Hood volume is not enough for a snow helmet. The Kishtwar is lighter than the Eider Power Pro as there is no insulation. The Eider Power Pro has an awesome high loft fleece interior.

vs Norrona Narvik - The Narvik gives you a different pocketing scheme with more pocket volume. Jacket fit and hood volume in the Narvik are going to be a bit more generous. The Narvik also features a powder skirt with neither the Kishtwar or Power Pro jackets feature. Like the Kishtwar the Narvik is not insulated.

Details like the high loft fleece interior, and wrist cuff design that creates a solid gasket against the elements (check the pictures), make this jacket for me, and set it apart from the other two jackets.

I hope this is helpful for you. Enjoy.

Great piece of equipment. The high-loft fleece interior is fantastic. I wore this yesterday with a thin merino wool base layer. It was drizzling and windy, about 39 degrees. I went for a short walk and it regulated my temperature perfectly. I'm 6'3" about 175, and I went with an XL. It fits nicely. The reason I'm giving this 4 stars, rather than 5, is the price. It's a bit ridiculous. Of course, that didn't stop me from buying it :P

if you want a softshell that performs like a hardshell buy this eider jacket

By:
November 4, 2010

the powershield pro fabric is a high loft on the inside, so you get the best heat to weight ratio with this softshell. Stretch, breathable, water resistant...why wear a hardshell???
