The Price is Right!

Initially, I was a little apprehensive about buying from a company I had never heard of before. I did some research and Earth Tec is (was?) a green company that uses mostly post consumer waste in their products. Plus the price was right so I took a shot. I like it! I'm 5'9" 165 lbs and the large fits loose with plenty of under-layer room. If you are my size and plan to use this jacket only as a mid layer, you could probably go with a med if you prefer a traditional fit. Lots of pockets, and the inside collar is nice soft fleece. The sleeve "gators" are also fleece which was a little weird at first, but really it's a pretty cool idea. The Mushroom color is actually a nice brown, don't be scared. I couldn't find the fill spec's but it feels a bit more substantial than the Zonal, Nano Puff, and the Revelcloud (at a third the price!) I'm guessing 100gs. I purchased it to use as an insulated mid layer under my shell for cold conditions. It hasn't been that cold out west this year and my fleece mid layer has been enough. So far I've only used it as a casual jacket over a thermal and t shirt in the low 30's and it was plenty warm. So, at the end of the day...there you go.

Great bang for the buck.

Great jacket for the price. Light, warm, and soft. Kept me warm in mid 20's temps. Fit well and protected against the wind. Wouldn't use it in super cold or if not moving around generating heat. But for the price, you can't beat it. Not as puffy as down, allows you to move easily. Too bad Earth-Tec closed.

Pretty good.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Don't get me wrong... my three stars are meant to say this jacket is good. It doesn't blow my mind open or anything, but it's fine. I have no experience with other comparable synthetic jackets. I was considering getting an REI Revelcloud or Montbell's version of a light-weight synthetic down jacket, but decided on this one b/c it was only $50 and I figured that it was priced as such b/c it didn't have the name-brand value of some of the other similar jackets.

At first, I wasn't a giant fan. I got a small and the sleeves seemed a tad too short, however, if you include the extra fleece sleeve-lining as "sleeve", then they fit perfectly actually.

It's definitely grown on me a lot since I got it. Main complaint so far is that the stuffing seems to come out of the seams rather easily. Not in giant tufts, but little wisps. It's fairly consistent and I wonder how long it's going to take before I have an empty sack of nothing. But if it happens quickly, I'm sure Backcountry will stand behind their guarantee, so it's fine.

Ultimately, I think it's a good buy for the price, but not if you were paying list for it.

Just what I was looking for

  • Gender: Male

I was look for a lite weight mid-layer jacket and I think found it in this jacket, I've only worn it few times, but the fit and weight are perfect. I can't wait until it gets colder, I will probably wear everyday granted the big test is yet to come but so it's great. The fit was spot on, the only compliant I would have is the wrist cuffs are a little big for me but I can fix that with my outer layer when it gets colder.

What type of cuff does the jacket have? ...

What type of cuff does the jacket have? Elastic, velco....

The cuffs are a little large on mine, but are made of a inner fleece cuff with the same outer material over it as a double layer. There is really no way to tighten the cuff around your wrist, like velcro or such.
