The 420D Helix ripstop fabric on both of these bags withstands the abuse of air and ground travel. At the beginning of your trip when you're scooting around the airport, keep this as one bag and use the wheels to move fast. Halfway through your trip when you have too much stuff to fit in just one bag, detach the top part of the rolling bag, make that into a duffel, and pull out the front side of the rolling bag to make that a complete bag as well. External compression straps keep your souvenirs from jumbling around too much, and reflective accents will keep you visible while you're trying to waive down a taxi. This bag integrates with Eagle Creek's Pack-it system so you can keep your underwear separate from those chili peppers you're bringing home.

This bag is awesome, just not quite what I was looking for. It is really large, and while it is versatile, with the zip off exterior bag, it has substantial weight and bulk. Not an ideal carry on bag for me. I ended up returning it, but think that if you are looking for something with carry on abilities with more uumph this is definitely your jam! The quality is excellent, the carry shoulder strap is strong, and the only improvement would be if this bag had backpack shoulder straps.

Excellent for Traveling

I purchased this in preparation for a two-week trip to Europe and am very happy with how it has put up with numerous flights and being thrown about. I used the bag as a carry-on from the US to Europe, then split it out into two bags (checking the roller) on my way back so I could bring back gifts and things I had bought along the way.
It's durable, and thank goodness for the compression straps! I lived out of this one bag for two weeks and upon retrospect I could have brought less, but it held everything and made traveling a breeze. I traveled around Europe very pleased with this bag.
One improvement I could think of is adding backpack straps to the detachable duffel bag.
