It’s the fourth day of your hut trip. Your buddies start to do a lot of creaking and groaning, and a bit of glaring at your spry-ity. Tell ‘em it must be all your pre-season training … they don’t need to know the exact weight of your Dynafit Mustagh Ata Superlight Touring Ski.

  • Paulownia Isocore wood is ultralight, snappy, warp-resistant, and earth-friendly
  • Biaxial fiberglass layup for torsional stiffness and lateral reinforcement
  • 88mm Underfoot (178cm) handles tight turns when precision counts
  • SpeedSkinFix in the tip for sweet hold on the uphill and less skin-hassle during transitions
  • Titanal Dynafit Ski Insert is easy to assemble and boosts ski-to-binding strength

Bottom Line: Big ascents and long-range tours.

I'm trying to decide among the Mustagh Ata, Manaslu, and BD Aspect for occasional resort days, but primarily ski mountaineering. At 5'8" and 155, I'm looking at the 166-169 cm range. Any thoughts?

Of those three skis I would recommend the Manaslu. It is the widest of the bunch at 95mm undefoot, plus it has a little bit of tip rocker. That combination is really going to help you out breaking trail and skiing in fresh snow. All three of these skis are really light, and the heaviest of the three will still feel paper light. The advantage to the two Dynafit skis is they are predrilled so you can swap your dynafit bindings in and out. A huge advantage if you have multiple skis and when traveling to save on weight. The manaslu is one of the most versatile touring skis out there when it comes to skiing in various snow conditions. The manaslu is the way to go.

Thanks, Sandy. I ski primarily in New England, with forays to the Cascades and an upcoming expedition to the Alaska Range.

I guess I'm looking for one ski to rule them all.

Hmmm...It depends alot on where you are skiing (snow conditions / depth) and how aggro you are. For light weight and a super-slick skin attachment I would go with either Dynafit. Also, at these weights, I would lean toward the Manaslu for the increased width. But, I live in UT where it comes in pretty deep and light! All three are good sticks. As for the size, if you really are primarily ski mtnrg with them, you are right on target. This short will get a little funky if you push them at the resort.
Enjoy!

Can these be mounted with tele bindings (BD 01) and still retain their warranty?

It really depends on the binding and what the mount pattern is on that binding. Because the ski is pre-drilled with inserts, unless that binding has the same hole pattern as dynafit bindings, you are probably going to run into issues with the holes interfering. I can't say for sure, but I would try to look at a non-dynafit branded ski.

I'm 5'10" and 190lbs. I ski the Sierras (i.e. mostly heavy stuff, not many days of real pow, but enough deep stuff) and I'm coming into AT from a dedicated tele mode. I've got a Dynafit Zzero 3 C boot and am wary of getting too much ski for it. I'm having a hard time trying to pin down the best choice between the Manaslu, Mustagh ATA SL, and Se7en Summits -- not to mention the question of (model-dependent) length. I was leaning towards the Se7en Summits as an all-around good choice for peak bagging out here, but if I only have one set of boards, maybe a mid-fat would be better? Recommendations?

I demoed the Mustagh Ata SL with the red ZZero boot for a day. No problems. as a result, I'm getting the ski and a pair of Scarpa Spirit 4's with the Dynafit TLT binding. The Scarpas fit my foot a little better. I've used my T2s on wider skis and I think in most off piste conditions, that a lighter boot drives a big ski just fine. The only time I notice problems is trying to drive a wide ski in light boots skiing boiler plate or white formica at ski areas.
