A ski with legendary status can be tricky. Changing it will risk the ire of a diehard group of fans, but leaving it untouched means it'll probably lose its legendary status after a few years. What to do? From the beginning, DPS has never been a company content to stand pat, so it wasn't comfortable leaving the iconic Wailer 112RP as is, even though most folks probably would've been fine if it did. We're guessing no one will complain about the result, though, which DPS is calling the Wailer 112RP2 Pure3. It has all the stability, playfulness, and versatility of the original, with a larger sweet spot and more comfort at speed, so you'll be able to ski just like you did on the original, but even harder.
The changes, to the relief of the masses, aren't radical. DPS lowered the height of the tip and tail rocker, giving the 112RP2 a slightly chargier and more stable feel, as well as reducing the tip vibration that can cause rockered skis to feel squirrely. There's still plenty of rise to help you float over soft snow and smooth out rough terrain, and the tail rocker allows you to slash pow turns and make quick, loose turns when you're shimmying down through tight trees. The sidecut profile is still classic DPS, with tapered tips and tails that give the ski a predictable, hook-free feel in soft snow and a Paddle Tech design that smooths the sidecut out at the rocker contact points for smooth turn initiation and a reliably surfy feel in freshies.
It's hard to imagine a Wailer without DPS' trademark lightweight construction, but don't worry, you don't have to. As you might guess, the company built this iteration of the Wailer with its trademark Pure3 construction, which sandwiches a lively and strong aspen core between two layers of prepreg carbon fiber, keeping the ski stiff at speed and strong under torsion, so it doesn't feel wobbly when you get it up on edge. Full-length UHMW sidewalls put plenty of power into the rugged Rockwell 48 steel edges for hardpack bite and mixed-snow security, and the World Cup bases keep you rocketing along and won't explode at the mere sight of a half-buried rock, so you can worry about skiing and not ruining your new toys.
