Your spine is really cool—flexible, supports your weight, etc. The Deuter Speed Lite 30 Backpack’s spine is those things, plus removable. A tensioned Delrin U frame adds lightweight, flexible structure and support to this pack and can be removed for fast, every-ounce-counts adventure races and hikes.

  • Tapered shape for extra arm motion when you move fast
  • Hexlite fabric for durability and light weight
  • Reinforced bottom supports loads
  • Adjustable compression system gives the option of a super-low profile

Bottom Line: Removable spine.

Light & multi-talented

It's light and tough. I use it now nearly for everything - backcountry, tradclimbing, hiking, city bouldering. If you tend to pure and plain packs with just one zipper probably you don't like all this straps. But it helps you through nearly every situation, even though you can feel like a cristmas tree if you don't put them in place. Also very robust. I love it!

Can the front area be used as a small shove pocket, perhaps for something like flip flops or other similar sized items?

After more searching and research I found a picture on Tahoe Mountain Sports' website showing a bike helmet in the front pocket area.

Good......for shorties!

It is not a bad pack for the money and the weight. It isn't very comfortable due to its very lightweight internal frame which only consists of a couple aluminum rods. Shoulder straps are very comfortable though. Sweat buildup is not bad for a pack with pads instead of a mesh. Dividers inside are nicely arranged. The hydration pocket includes a Velcro strap, not a loop, making it ideal for platypus, a PITA though for Camelbak and others that need to be hooked.
The biggest issue is the size. I have a torso length of about 21 inches, average if you ask me for a male. This causes the waist belt to sit at my belly button. If that's your thing, you'll like this ultralight. Otherwise it'll drive you nuts, the way it did me. I am selling mine after using it once!
