When comfort and performance are top priorities on your hiking do-to-list, then Deuter's Futura Pro 34 SL Backpack should be the next item to check off..This women's-specific bag holds 25 lbs of supplies within its 2100 cubic inches and works well for an overnight expedition. Ripstop nylon can handle abrasion and tough terrain on your way up to the summit. Deuter's Aircomfort system creates airflow between you and the bag, allow sweat to evaporate more easily. Deuter created the Furtura's 34 with a narrower body in mind, so it fits the smaller torso of a woman securely. Being hydration-compatible and having compression straps are just a few of the features Deuter included in order to make your next trip an enjoyable one.

Bottom Line: Get a pack as smart and tough as you are, get the Deuter Futura Pro.

How sturdy is the hipbelt? While my current pack has a large, padded hipbelt it's fairly soft and flexible and I'd prefer one a little stiffer.

Perfect over-night pack.

By:
April 26, 2010

This is my second Deuter backpack. I pack v.efficiently/light, so have been using this backpack for multi-night backpacking trips in warm weather. The back mesh panel allows more ventilation than any other brand pack I've found and is still extremely comfortable. My most recent trip along the Kalalau Trail in Kauai had me climbing up and down cliffs - this pack allowed a lot of movement w/it's pivoting hip-belt. The included rain-cover w/its storage pocket is amazing for its convenience and fit. This pack had ample pockets for easy storage of smaller items as well as enough straps/secure points to allow items to be attached on the outside.

I had this pack loaded to 25-30 lbs and had no problem w/the weight. The hipbelt is not as firm as my extended trip pack, but was ok for the load I mentioned. It is a slim pack - I'm 5'2"/size 4 and pack fits me perfectly. I don't think the hipbelt padded portion would be long/big enough for someone w/larger hips.

My only qualm w/this pack is that there is no easily reached pocket while the pack is on your back - you will not be able to quickly grab your camera along the trail.

Unfortunately Lisa, there is not hipbelt pocket. The only pockets this pack has are:

- Top Lid Pocket
- Side Bellow Pockets
- Hydration Compatible
- Divided Main Compartment
- Side Mesh Pockets
- Front Stash Pocket
- Interior Valuables Pocket
- Ice Axe & Trekking Pole Loops

Not for long waisted women

By:
February 20, 2008

Love the pack, wish it came in a non-women's version. It rides too high and should not be purchased for anyone with torso length equal to or greater than 18 inches. Unfortunately I have to return it for this reason.

Does the Futura Pro 34 SL have a zipper pocket on the hip belt?

Does the Futura Pro 34 SL have a zipper pocket on the hip belt? I think the 32 does, but I'm unsure about this one.

Vented and light

By:
November 13, 2009

I've hiked with this pack for the past two seasons and it is the most well vented pack I have. Here in the foothills of Boulder during the summer temps can dwell in the 90's and up. I'm 5'2" and sometimes it's hard to realize you even have it on. The only complaint would be that the Waist belt is not beefy enough. I think you are pushing it comfort wise when you start nearing the 25 pound capacity that this pack claims to have. I wouldn't load it up with trad gear or anything. I like to pack a DSLR camera, one or two lenses and various other stuff for day trips and this pack can end up being a little uncomfortable around the waist if you're lugging around anything over 15 pounds. The shoulder straps are quite comfortable. My shoulders are not too wide and a lot of packs don't fit me there. I love the torso adjustment on it, very easy to maneuver. All in all, I would recommend this pack if you are hauling around a lot of gear that doesn't weigh too much.

Santa Rocks this one

By:
November 18, 2008

Santa brought me this pack last year and I have used it mostly for climbing trips. I do think that it is pretty great. Very light and nice to use. I feel that some of it's packing space is lost by the Aircomfort system, although that is a rad feature. I don't think I could fit everything I need for an overnight solo (tent, food, sleeping bag, pad, clothes) in here, but definantly a great buy for long day trips or trips where you need lots of gear.

It mentions being built for "narrow body", and one reviewer mentions the torso length is too short. What is the length of the pack or what length torso is it intended for? In the mens version the shoulder straps are too wide and painful to carry for me... so looking for a womens version.

Yeah, SL is for slim...deuter pitches it to women and smaller men and tries not to make the color too prissy! It's a euro brand and seems a bit smaller to me.

The torso length is actually adjustable for the women's version, that reviewer may not have been able to explore this feature yet. There are "notches" where you can hook the top of the straps to, the intent is to address the various torso sizes of women so that the waist strap really sits on the waist. The shoulder straps are narrower and also designed to give ample room for women's chests.I found this really comfortable, on the whole, way better than my old versions of deuter that were mainly based on men's bodies.

Check out the Deuter ACT Lite SL 35+10L and 45+10L models. Backcountry.com doesn't seem to carry them. IMO, if you are taking a sleeping bag (and mat, etc?), you may want a bit more volume just to make packing easier. Having stuff hanging off the outside is bummer. Check out the Osprey ladies stuff too. Good for smaller people.

The Futura Pro 34SL has a zippered sleeping bag compartment separator flap and 4 D-rings on top for attachment points.
