    Quick laps or day tours.

The Deuter Freerider Pro 28 SL Backpack gives you the versatility you need to do anything from quick laps out of bounds to full pre-dawn to after-dark backcountry tours whether you ride skis or a splitboard. In addition to multiple carry options for both rigs, this pack also includes ice-tool holders and gear loops for more technical ski-mountaineering objectives. Back panel access lets you stash your second layer inside during the ascent without having to remove your skis or board.

When you top out and get ready to drop in, just unclip your skis, get your goggles out of the internal fleece-lined pocket, remove your helmet from the carry system, and point 'em down. The Alpine System suspension moves with you so you don't feel like you're riding no-fall terrain with a wooden board strapped to your back. A separate front pocket holds all of your avalanche rescue gear just in case things go pear shaped and your partner breaks out a big slab at the worst time.

nice pack, but problems with fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This pack is well made and looks great, but doesn't seem to fit well on my frame, no matter how I adjust straps. I am on the taller side (5' 10", 140 lbs) and it may be that my torso is too long for the pack. I previously purchased a similar model for my husband and we both love it, but I'm not crazy about the fit of the women's version. I work as a geologist and wanted a day pack for carrying equipment, including hammers and tools, and the many pockets are great for this purpose. But it was pretty uncomfortable when I recently tested it in the field over the last few weeks. It sat uncomfortably on my hips and I ended up with a sore back since the weight was not evenly distributed on the hips. I will try the men's version and hope that works - the back is roomy with nice compartments but still streamlined. So I guess a word of caution to non-petite women - it may be better to go with the men's version. Otherwise a well made and versatile pack with quick delivery and great customer service.

    Burly little backcountry ski pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Searched and searched for a great backcountry ski pack. Had to be women's specific for me. This fit the bill, with tons of pockets specific for avalanche gear and anything else that you might want when you are out on a tour. At 28 L it is probably the biggest I would go for a touring pack, but it cinches down so close to my back that I don't even notice that I am wearing a pack when I am skiing. Material is extremely durable and feels like it will last forever. Different ski and board carry options - I appreciate the versatility. Looks sharp, feels really nice. A pack that I will have forever.

I bought this for winter tours, but lent it to a friend who recently went up to Mt. Adams and this is what she said about it:

"I needed a backcountry backpack that was lightweight, comfy, and still had room for enough gear for an all day excursion. This backpack definitely has all that and more. Plenty of room on the inside for my 3L hydration reservoir, multiple layers, gloves, hat, sunscreen, food, climbing skins, crampons and more. The alpine back system kept my back well ventilated and while making my 6,000foot ascent with all that gear, the backpack always sat comfortable on the hips. I liked the internal fleece lined pocket and found it was a safe place to carry my cell phone and sunglasses.

Negatives were that the removable helmet carrier was, a little bulky and added extra unnecessary weight. Also, the side buckles clip over both main zippers. I've had backpacks where the clips are in between the zippers which is more convient when trying to get into your pack when its loaded with ski gear on the outside and inside. I just had to remember to keep the zippers, when zipped, on the top of the pack, rather than zipping them down on the sides.

Awesome backpack for all day backcountry excursions but I would recommend a bigger backpack for over night adventures."

    Awesome Pack!!

I do a lot of snowshoe approaching out to spots to snowboard (sometimes overnighters) and have been looking for something that's sort of a crossover between my big technical pack (which is overkill and doesn't have dedicated board carry) and the backpacks that are made for some light sidecountry action (which tend to be underkill - not enough straps/capacity). This is it. It has a ton of room inside, organizer pockets for all your crap, an epic amount of strappage on the outside, a super sturdy snowboard/ski/helmet carry, and I can latch my snowshoes and poles on tight for the descent. It locks down tight pretty much everywhere so you can get a super snug tailored fit. I've only taken it out once so far, but it was great. I only have two minor beefs... 1. the hole where the hydration hose comes out points at a weird angle and presses against your back a bit, and 2. it doesn't come in sizes, so the torso fit isn't QUITE perfect. I'm 5'9" and an inch longer in the torso would have been great. That said, I love that it's women-specific because the shoulder straps are angled in such a manner that you don't get wretched sideboob chafing, which tends to happen with guys' packs.

    Awesome Pack!!
