Having had NF and Osprey packs, I thought I'd give this Deuter 18 a try. Used it on my day hikes around the wasatch mountains, my daily 12 mile commute into work (year round), and on my flights across the US. Over the course of a year, I figured just over 20k miles on my pack and it's looking just like new still! It's great in high temps with the empty air back mesh and the straps are in just the right place. I'm 6'2" 165 and the thing fits me like a glove. The materials are super high quality. It truly is a super versatile all-around pack.

How does the ski carrying mechanism work?

This pack is designed as a hiking pack and does not have any ski carry loops. The loops you see in the picture that you may be confusing for a ski carrying mechanism are actually trekking pole loops.
