Virus Lite Touring Boot - Men's

After picking the mind within the mowhawked head of freeskiiing master Glen Plake, Dalbello crafted, and now, proudly introduces the Men's Virus Lite Touring Boot. The walk/ski mode mechanism on the back cuff combined with a two-piece, Bio-Stride tongue allows full articulation during stride when touring. Pull the nylon tab to release the tongue, and reap the benefits of a longer, less inhibited stride. The result—you cover more ground with less effort and less resistance on your leg.

  • Bio-stride tongue releases to permit backward hinging for a longer, less inhibited stride and locks down to create a single tongue with maximum support during descent
  • Ultralight aluminum buckles and composite materials help you preserve precious energy
  • Top buckle clasp is positioned on the side, out of the way of potentially destructive environmental features like rocks and ice
  • Low hinge cuff design allows freedom of movement that follows your natural leg motion
  • Totally new mold design features the Dalbello three-piece shell construction

Bottom Line: From the mind of the master.

Glen Plake's Baby is beaut

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete

Glen Plake's baby is an amazing piece of boot engineering. The ski-mode feel of this boot is reassuringly solid, way better than almost any touring boot on the market. The range of motion in the walk mode is pretty incredible as well.

Drawbacks: The boot is very high volume, maybe too high volume even for larger feet, particularly in the instep there is a lot of room. The buckles work well when they're engaged but the weird wire construction can take quite a bit of fiddling to get used to.

I agree with Drew Tabke: I also found this boot to have a relatively HIGH volume.

After trying on these boots today I have to disagree with your assessment of the boot as high volume.

In fact, it is without a doubt the lowest volume boot of all the 2010-11 touring boots I've tried on including the Scarpas (Mobe, Mistralle) the Black Diamonds (Factor, Quadrant) and even the Garmonts (Endorphin, Radium) *I tried on all (skied some) of these boots in a size 27.

The numbers also speak to this with the Virus boots having the smallest last of all the boots listed above at 100mm.

These boots have a very similar fit to my 3 year-old Kryptons with a perfectly, snug low volume feel around the calf, over the instep and through the toebox. The only exception to the krypton would be a slightly higher volume heel pocket (easy to fix with some foam) and a little more length (maybe 2mm).

I would compare the stiffness of this boot to that of the BD Quadrant (not quite as stiff as the Radium) but with a more linear/intuitive flex. The walk mode is exceptional even with the buckles done up (front clip disengaged) it moves better then any other boot I've experienced (except maybe a older spirit 4 with the split/soft tongue).

The buckles are easy to access and open but the keeper system built into the clasps isn't on par with the positive locking mechanism found on the Garmonts. The liner is super light and feels like (in the 27) it has some room to pack out (probably 3mm).

I normally wear a 27 across the board and in my older Kryptons (07 Rampage) but since I had a little more length in the Virus Lite I'm going to try the 26.5 before I commit and will update this review if I find a better fit in the 26.5.

I hope this is helpful to you Dalbello fans out there. After reading this comment I thought I was out of luck but have no fear, if you love the Dabello fit you will love this boot!

Thanks Drew, the boot fit/volume are the things almost always missing from reviews.

I hear that the upper buckle cable was designed too long, and that shorter cables are available from Dalbello. Do you have these? Are they free?

Great boot

These are more expensive than many other AT boots, but they are completely worth it, in my opinion. It's apparent that a lot of careful thought and experience went into this boot's design. The liner is exceptionally comfortable (I have not baked mine). The boot is relatively lightweight (~ 8 lbs. for size 28.5). The range of motion while skinning is exceptional, and it skis well, too.

I understand the tongue helps determine flex. Does the 90 or 110 tongue from 'tour' boot fit the 'tour lite' boot? if so are they readily available and how much $? thanks

See my answer under the regular "tour" model.
Tour model may be a bit stiffer tongue than Lite, but neither is as stiff as the "Freeride" model.
Reports are that you can order spare tongue but they do NOT come with the boot.

These boots are sick! Ultra light weight and with crazy technology that allows for effortless shift from walking to shredding. Good stiffness and the vibram soles will keep you on top of that rocky ridge line that lies between you and the freshest turns.

Favorite New Toys

I'm really stoked to finally own this boot! The hefty price tag steered me clear for along time, but man am I happy with what I've purchased. These boots are the bomb for a no compromise touring boot. They are more capable of driving a ski than other softer feeling touring boots. Built around Dalbello's Krypton Pro basic design, these are unlike any touring boot out there. They provide almost infinite flex, yet still are able to provide the leverage needed to ski at higher speeds. With a huge range of motion for walk mode, they make skinning (almost) enjoyable. The Intuition liner makes the fit of these as close as you can get to completely custom foam liner without buying them. As with most ski boots, a custom foot bed is recommended for best fit and support, which should eliminate some of the high volume this boot provides initially.
