The DAKINE Heli Winter Backpack fits to your back like a surgical-grade rubber glove and carries either skis or a snowboard with comfort and ease. With just enough room for a compressible warm layer and some food, this essentials-only bag keeps things simple. An external shovel pockets means you’ll never be able to justify leaving your safety gear at home, and, should disaster strike, everything is quickly accessible. Everyone knows eyewear fogs during a long hike, so rejoice when you pull a fresh pair of goggs from the fleece-lined pocket while all your buddies are playing ‘see through the fog.’

Bottom Line: Jump from the chopper.

No probe specific pocket

By:
January 14, 2011

Perfect for side jaunts under the ropes, you don't want to be one of those dudes heading out of bounds with out at least a shovel a probe and a beacon. Could probably handle trips into the backcountry if you pack light, there isn't much room for more than a liter or two in a bladder a shovel a probe some cliff bars a down sweater and spare set of gloves. Only downside really is no probe specific pocket.

Is there a trick to quickly/easily loading skis onto this thing?

Is there a trick to quickly/easily loading skis onto this thing? Currently, I have to take it off to put the skis on, but was wondering if it can be done on the fly without taking the pack off?

Theoretically its possible if you were to use the diagonal carry. The trick would be getting the tail of your skis through the loop while its behind you and then fastening the top strap. In all reality, its simply faster to take the pack off, sling the skis, and then start up the slope!

Perfect out-of-bounds resort bag

By:
October 11, 2010

I've had this pack for going on 3 years now. It has help up to anything and everything. It still looks brand new and trust me I've put it through quite a bit. It's big enough to house your essentials while out-of-bounds at a ski resort. Yet, small enough so it doesn't look like you are going to go camping at the resort. I use this bag for everything, school, hikes, skiing, etc. Extremely durable, convenient, and very practical for those who want a bag to carry their essentials up onto the mountain.

too long

By:
February 2, 2011

This bag has great features and plenty of room for all the essentials. Only thing is it was too long for my torso. I am 5'6" and consider myself to have an average sized torso but when I put this bag on it hit me high on the back of my neck and very low on my lower back. If you are taller than me, go for it! If you are shorter it probably won't work for you.

This shovel is nice and small, but will still work great in heavy snow... This is the shovel I roll with everyday in the BC, it's also one of the lightest shovels out there.... Backcountry Access Traverse EXT Shovel http://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-access-traverse-ext-shovel

Great day pack

By:
December 15, 2010

Enough room to hold extra layers, or a dry change of clothes, food and snacks, water with separate bladder and hose. The suspension padding for your back is great when you have skis and boots hanging off the pack, and it doesn't slouch on your coat. Perfect for small adventures off piste or just keeping comfortable during a day at the resort.
