Worry about your line, not your pack.

Even though you know it can save your life when you're in the backcountry, it's still frustrating having to wear a clunky pack when you're shredding technical lines or dropping big cliffs. Luckily, you can streamline things and lighten your load with the Dakine BC Vest Pack. It features plenty of pockets to hold all your touring needs and a low-profile design that distributes weight more evenly, plus it's been tweaked this year to provide even more breathability for a more comfortable hiking experience.

A large main pocket at the back stores your shovel and probe, while multiple strategically placed exterior pockets hold your radio, snow tools, snacks, and water. It also features interior skins pockets to help keep your glue supple and sticky. Vertical board straps and diagonal ski straps hold your shred sticks of choice when you're bootpacking, and side compression straps ensure a snug, secure fit so you almost don't even notice you're wearing a pack.

Good pack, but a few weak points...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The good: comfortable vest, lots of storage, good breathability/ventilation, no insulation, pockets seem well thought out & functional.
The bad: zippers seem a little weak- especially the front dual slider zipper. I haven't had any problem with it yet, but it can be a bear to get started, especially if ice/snow would be clogging it. While the back padding designed to protect your back from the shovel/handle/probe seems stout enough, it may make some people nervous. Again, I've had no problem with it, but some people might be wary.
I bought this to carry supplies while I ride snowmobiles in the back country, and wanted something that wouldn't flop around, and so I wouldn't have to worry about pack straps getting caught on my sled and dragging me into a crevasse. If it looks stupid, but it works, it's not stupid. This fits the bill nicely.

    Unanswered Question

How is the back panel padding? Is it rigid enough to protect the rider from the shovel blade on a hefty back slap off of a large drop? This feature is a make or brake for this to be a proper freeride pack.

I have a large chest for my size. I'm 5'6 and 180lbs with a 44/45 inch chest. the size scale says I should be a large, but i was wondering if it would if weird due to my height?

    Hey,

The chest size is going to be highly adjustable. The size chart is for Dakines apparel. Your torso length (measured from base of your neck down to your hips) and waist size will be how to determine the correct size. I've included the sizes below.

    S/M: Torso length 16"-18"; Waist 34"-47"

    L/XL: Torso length 17"-21" ; Waist 38"-50"

XXL: Torso length 17"-21"; Waist 42"-60"

Considering to buy, but what about size? I am 183 cm and 85kg. Large?

    Will I get extremely warm?

    Filip

    Hey Filip,

Chest measurement is going to be the key size here - for a large that would be 42-44in (106.7 - 111.8cm). Keep in mind, this is going over your jacket, so measure around that. It does have straps on the side that let you snug it down a bit.

This year's model is made with a more breathable material to help with that issue of overheating!

Has there been any changes to the vest from the previous season?

    Hey Reid,

Here's what the Dakine catalog says about this years BC vest:

    *Improved breathability*

Vertical snowboard carry, retractible cable ski carry, 2 way opening main zipper, organizer pocket, radio pocket, snow tool/shovel pocket, hydration compatible, interior climbing skin pockets, side compression straps.

Check out this one of a guy charging fresh boot pack straight up a mountain! Interesting how his hard good set up is not exactly pro-tour, and he chose not to use the ski carry system...

Anyway, it is pretty low-profile, which I think is super neat... And it's a good way to keep all your gear close and well organized! You're right though, the vest is a unique style that might not suit everyone!
