Don't carry it; wear it.

You've seen them by now, the pros and patrollers with their slick vest packs. Stop drooling all over things that don't belong to you and get your own Dakine BC Vest Pack. A handy pack you wear as a vest always fits and feels comfortable as the load is distributed over the front, back, and sides. Multiple exterior pockets hold your radio, probe, shovel, and other tools, and interior skins pockets help keep your glue supple and sticky. You can even attach your board or skis to the back when the terrain is a little too sketchy to shoulder them. No more back-heavy, bouncing backpacks on light, fast trips―and no more vest-envy.

  • Durable, lightweight 630D nylon and 1260D ballistic nylon withstand rugged wear and tear for long-term reliability and protection
  • Vertical snowboard and retractable cable ski carriers let you attach board(s) on back for more stable, hands-free hiking
  • Organizer, radio, snow tool and shovel exterior pockets hold your backcountry essentials
  • Two interior climbing skin pockets secure these close at hand for convenience and less glue-freeze
  • Hydration compatibility lets you carry your reservoir in convenient security
  • Side compression straps keep the load tidy and stable while hiking or bombing downhill

Great value and fit.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Having 60 to 100 days on snow for the past 20 years, and 1/3rd of them being contest days running the events, provides me with some perspective on this vest. I used to run the 1st generation Ogio flight vest but it was time to retire it last season. This was a great replacement. Pocket placement and size, along with the construction and versatility made this a prized possession early on. The event staff all want one for next year.
While out in CO the vest performed perfectly holding small tools, hydro bag, and lunch during longer treks for turns. I ordered a L/XL as I'm 6'3" and the fit was great over my heavy down or spring shell.
The only downside is not offering it in black but that is so shadowed by my satisfaction on every other aspect I can completely look past it.
Final words? if you don't want to carry the hump through the trees then get this vest. You will not regret it.

Howdy JWalence.

Here's an image for you to check out the back of the vest which I grabbed from the DaKine website. Additonally here's a product video from Dakine.

beats the backpack!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am not a vest guy, at all. I carry a backpack (so many different backpacks! I am a freak for gear) I like to carry water, extra gloves, hunks of bison, a pepperoni, maybe some bagels, screwdriver, gummy stone, skins, extra goggle (ever break a goggle in the middle of the day? It sucks!) and who knows what else winds up in my backpack and pockets. I gave up the backpack for a month this year, tried carrying pepperoni and bottle of water in my bibs. Awkward as hell I tell you. Then I saw this crazy vest and gave it a shot. I have several days with it now and am converted! It does not swing around like a backpack can (even with a full 100oz camelback) it holds everything tight on your body. Which can be weird when you have too much stuff in the pockets, so I learned to separate out the bison from the sausage, then goggles from the keys and so forth. Now they all have a home, and travel nicely on me. Plus is looks kind of cool. Get lots of heads turned when I whip out a hose from the shoulder, to wash down my random sandwich and swap out gloves. It just works. I have not tried carrying shovel, probe and bc gear (still have a dedicated BD Avalung pack for that) but for resort days when you need to keep liquid and some back up crap with you, it does very well. It was restrictive at first (not used to having such a tight fitting, loaded vest on) but after one run in the trees I was sold on this. No straps flailing in the wind or grabbing branches and lot of organization potentials. Its a really great idea and I love it. I have the L/XL and am 6'1" 200lb.

Sean, is there any protective/rigid layer between your back and the pocket that holds the shovel pocket?

Would this vest hold snowshoes, while riding a snowboard?

It's got a snowboard carry, so you can rig it up to hold your snowshoes. I looked at this vest for doing what your talking about.

Light and easy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I took this vest to AK last year for a two week trip and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I am not one to bring a bunch of additional gear on my tours so the vest was simple and easy for my needs. Carried my skins, water bottle, three part poles, probe and shovel easily. The fit is a bit small though. I am 5'9", average body build and the L/XL was pretty snug on me. If you are a little bigger you will definitely need the XXL version which will be in stock at the end of October.

I'm not too different from you 5'8" fairly built. I got the S/M. It fits fine but I'm considering returning it to get the L/XL. Do you wear baggier outerwear or athletic fit. thanks.

I wear Volcom Gore in the Standard Fit. I wish these photos would show up cause you could see the fit of the vest with my jacket on. I noticed the fit issue mostly when the back of the vest was full with my probe, shovel, etc... That is when I definitely was glad I had the L/XL in the vest.
