Description

A 40-liter innovative backpack cover that integrates into the ABS Vario Base Unit (sold separately).

The Dakine ABS Vario Cover Backpack comes in super-handy for avid backcountry skiers or snowboarders who enjoy big tours and technical ascents, but want to do them in greater safety. Designed to work in conjunction with the ABS Vario Base Unit (sold separately), this 40-liter cover attaches onto your ABS airbag unit and enables you to carry everything you need in the backcountry during a long, all-day tour.

  • Designed to integrate with the ABS Vario Base Unit (sold separately), an airbag unit that can be deployed in case of an avalanche and help your chances of survival by helping to keep you on top of snow debris
  • Base Unit's unique YKK zipper system allows you to easily attach the Vario to the Base Unit in mere seconds and enables you to swap out for a different cover (sold separately) to supply more or less room depending on your touring needs
  • 40-liter cover features plenty of room for food, hydration, spare goggles, your down puffy, first aid kit, skins, extra layering, and other essentials
  • Top entry provides easy access to your gear, while a snow tool/shovel pocket located in the front of the pack holds your avy gear
  • 630D nylon and 1260D ballistic nylon fabrics provide solid durability and abrasion resistance while you work for your turns
  • Retractable cable ski carry for convenience
  • ABS 40L allows you to carry your skis A-frame style or diagonally and enables vertical snowboard carry
  • Deployable helmet carry keeps your helmet out of the way and secure
  • Quick-draw ice axe sleeve stashes your ice axe and makes it easily accessible when you hike up a steep couloir
  • Zippered side pocket holds your energy goo and utility tool
  • Load compression straps secure everything down for comfortable carry while you tour or bootpack
  • Editor’s Note: wearing this airbag system does NOT guarantee that you will survive an avalanche burial or a slide amidst avalanche debris; get educated, get the right tools, travel with partners, and be smart out there

Great for long Touring & Splitboarding

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love this Bag!! as a matter of fact I have both the 25 & 40 liter ABS/Dakine bags. They work so well with the ABS system, zipping onto my ABS frame in no time. They fit and balance weight well. I mostly nowboard but they work great for skiing as well. As a snowboarder I prefer the dakine packs over most brands as they carry the board well either vertical or horizontal. They compartment set up of the bags interior is very well thought out for all your needs!! This pack is great for splitboarding & touring long days or even Hut trips for a few nights. Love this bag & how well it's made!!!

The cover is literally just a cover. I thought it actually came with straps. Great concept, but it would be nice for Dakine to offer straps to be sold with this until you can fork over the extra 1K for the Vario Base Unit.

well thought out ABS Cover.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently picked up the 25 liter cover (smaller version) for skiing Teton Pass/Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, & these packs are very well thought out. I wish the Vario covers were as thought out as well as DaKine.

I have a Vario 40 Liter cover for longer touring trips, I would of loved to get this pack, but the price was right. I got a deal I could not pass up for the Vario 40 ($66 shipped brand new on GearTrade), but I still went with the DaKine 25L since that will be my primary cover for my ABS pack. Unless you are getting a crazy deal, go with DaKine.
