If you haven’t taken the Columbia Men’s Whirlibird Jacket for a spin, then you’re missing out. This classic Columbia parka has been around longer than most outdoor companies, and it just keeps getting better. Microtemp insulation, a zip-off storm hood, and Omni-Tech waterproof-breathable fabric protect you from bone-chilling temps and swirling snow. Wear the shell alone to deflect precipitation, the insulated liner when it’s cold and dry out, or put them together to form Columbia’s infamous 3-in-1 storm-battling combo.
I'm trying to decide between this jacket and the Columbia Portage Glacier Down Jacket. This one is like a 100 bucks cheaper, but the glacier down jacket has duck-down feathers and looks warmer.
So can you give me some advice/benefits on both? Thanks
The Portage Glacier is a down-filled parka whereas this has a synthetic, zip-out liner. This offers the versatility of having 3 jackets, covering most of what Mother Nature can throw at you. The F10 Portage Glacier is like a sleeping bag with sleeves, housing the latest insulating layer -- OmniHeat.
Both are good for the cold, and both have removable hoods.
I bought the earlier version of this jacket and have fully enjoyed it. It fits perfect to normal size. Also one great feature of this jacket is how its 2 jackets in 1. If ur getting a little hot or its getting towards spring, you can take the outer shell off and wear it as a fully functional normal light jacket, pockets and all, the inner jacket looks like it could belong by itself, like you bought it by itself. Also, you can take the hood off the outer shell, like i normally do when i go snowboarding with it, and it has a powder skirt to keep the snow from coming up inside. Overall, very warm and very comfortable. Recommended!
I have the XL 3L Titanium Parka, navy blue and black, and have miss placed the sipper hudd, that belongs with the jacket. Would you be able to tell me where I can pick a hudd up. or if the company could give me a price on how I can order a hudd, which would be nave blue. Thank you
As the center of gear knowledge, Backcountry.com wants you to be as informed as possible when buying high-end gear, and we've compiled price listings from some other reputable retailers for you to compare. This is a midrange to higher-end jacket in Columbia's 'Omni-Tech' line, designed for outdoor winter use. It seems well-constructed, is wind- and waterproof, breathes well, and offers a good selection of pockets. The jacket features a snap-back powder skirt, removable (snap/velcro) hood, and a zip-in liner. The liner is more of a 'down-filled' style (but uses polyester fill, not actual down), not like the typical fleece liners that come with most Columbia shells. This uses their standard "Interchange System" for liners, so you can use any comparable Columbia zip-in liner. As with most Columbia 3-in-1 shells, you lose access to the powder skirt and all the internal pockets of the jacket with a liner zipped in, although you can still get at the liner's pockets. (I actually prefer not zipping the liner into the jacket when wearing both.)
This isn't the very best in ski jackets, but it is well-made, affordable, and comes in tall sizes (if you shop elsewhere, at least until Backcountry orders some more tall shells from Columbia.) Unless you plan on going into some really extreme conditions, this jacket should hold up well to ski and snowboard use.
"cast" is just part of the colorway (the color on the liner)...but buy it here dude!...look at amazons return policy compaired to this places, yeah amazons is crapola
I was nervous the coat wouldn't be warm enough, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. The inside coat is like a sleeping bag. At times, I have even gotten too warm wearing it. With spring approaching, I removed the inner coat and just wear the shell now. I love it. It's great to wear when a light weight jacket is needed, and in the rain, I couldn't ask for anything more. I would strongly recommend this jacket to anyone and everyone.
Stayed warm AND dry on ski trip even on a rain day. Fit better than I expected. Even with my long arms. I'm 6'2" 195 lbs 36" waist with 35" sleeves. Room for base layer and fleece. Plenty of pockets. Will use year round as separates or 3 in 1 for hiking and biking. Love it! Great price, too...
Columbia does not post their ratings because if the product is waterproof breathable then that's what it is. This jacket is made with our Omni-Tech technology which is a waterproof breathable membrane. This also comes with our lifetime warranty so if the jacket ever leaked during the life of the garment Columbia will replace at no charge.
This is a great jacket that lives up to its billing. If you buy it hoping for more than what the description promises you will be disappointed. But you can depend on the fact that it will be exactly what Columbia describes. As far as I'm concerned, that's all I ever want out of anything I buy.
I'm extremely happy with this jacket, plus I got it at a great price with super shipping and service from backcountry.com.
1.Does the jacket have a good ykk two-way zipper? 2.do the zippered pit zips actually open for good ventilation? 3.are the two chest pockets good size where one could store a balaclava, hat or spare gloves? hikers get warm and cold quickly, so versatility is critical. thanks
There is no two-way zipper on this. Chest pockets measure 8.5" x 6.5". bottom front pockets are 10" x 9.5" so plenty of room for storage. There is good ventilation in this jacket.
I'm 5'5", 140lbs, and I ordered a Med, like I always do (I have a wide back and broad shoulders). The zip out liner fits wonderfully, but the outside Shell is very big. It's a little long and looks as if it's designed for somebody to weight 250lbs. With ski gear on it may look normal, but I use it for fishing in 40 degree winter weather, and it's kind of goofy looking.
Regardless, the purpose is to keep you warm, and it does that well! Under $150 is an amazing price also!
Not quite what I expected, but serves the purpose. Seems a lot more thin than a winter coat I would think of. The hood is pretty much a joke. I don't like how the collar looks or feels. The two parts of the coat separate in the back and are not connected very well. Overall I am happy with the purchase, the coat is yet to be truly tested to Missouri cold, however. I like the color and the pockets.

This jacket is great. It has met all my expectations so far - warm, comfortable, easy to use the pockets, etc. My only complaint would be that the hood is just a very light shell, no liner or anything to keep your head warm - but nothing a beanie can't fix! I'd highly recommend this coat - and BackCountry.
