What's the difference between the Columbia Thunderstorm II Jacket and the Thunderstorm GRT jacket?

Specs show the GRT to be an inch longer in the body alone. The color blocking is different, and it looks to be a difference in model year. With the Thunderstorm II above you will get a more matte finish on the fabric than the GRT

Fully Seam-Sealed - Columbia carefully tape and seal every seam, so no water can possibly get through.

I picked one of these up from the local Columbia outlet store. I needed a rain jacket for the Swamp Stomp adventure race. I have never owned anything Columbia before and bought it on the pure recommendation of the sales person.
The weather the day of the race was in the low 50s. The course involved a muddy bike ride, hiking on dry double track/dirt roads, and sloshing through knee to waste deep swamp.
This jacket kept me dry and warm all day. Even when running/biking, a minor adjustment to the zipper kept my temperature comfortable. While navigating cypress stumps int he swamp, I had to put my arm in the water to avoid totally going under. I was amazed to find the jacket was still dry and repelled all the water!
I am now sold on the Columbia name and I am convinced this jacket helped me finish the race!

This jacket has a drop in mesh liner. This will prvide some barrier between your skin and the waterproof membrane.

This jacket is very comfortable, breathes nicely, looks good around town, has kept me completely dry in the showers I've been in (some pretty severe), and came at a great price. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because I haven't had it long enough to make sure it is durable. I will have to keep it a while to see if the waterproofing lasts through the conditions. This jacket is extremely lightweight and packs down nicely into the side compartment of my pack. Overall great jacket!
Yes, both hands and chest pocket do have zippers.

This jacket works great for what I wanted - a lightweight shell that is waterproof and big enough to wear layers under. It's not insulated, so you will need to wear clothes when it's cold, but this allows it to be used in all different weather. Great jacket, would recommend for people who want lightweight, packable shell with plenty of room for layering.

I haven't ever gotten too warm from wearing it. It is lightweight and uninsulated, but still breathable. I would use it in the summer

If you're speaking to the velcro strap on the back side o fthe hood it is a volume adjustment. By using the velcro strap you can move the visor higher or lower on your brow for better fit.

Hey Adam,
I can't see any Velcro in the photos I'm afraid. However, every single jacket I've seen with Velcro on the hood has two strips of Velcro. One is usually on the outside of the hood located near the seam that joins the hood to the jacket. The other is likely inside the hood also near the jacket/hood seam. This allows one to roll the hood up and stow it in order to avoid having "floppy hood syndrom" whilst on the trail. Hope that helps.

It packs very well, and is excellent in spring or fall weather conditions. It was a life-saver on my trip to Ireland. I haven't used it yet in colder conditions, but it would be very easy to layer underneath it in order to stay dry and warm.

I need a jacket with length similar to a suit or sport coat. I got a jacket from North Face like the "Thunderstorm II" (L) which was only 28" from mid-shoulder to the bottom. I want more like 32"+. Would this jacket fill the request?

The Thunderstorm II has a 30" back length. 32"+ you're getting more into the trench styling which is hard to find in outdoor gear.

Really nice jacket, does what its supposed too. I found the hood to be a bit oversized, but it keeps my face dry.

Grant,The Thunderstorm II has an attached hood. For a $90 $59.95 on sale rain jacket that looks as nice as this does, you don't get that many extra bells and whistles. Unless you want to shell (pun intended) out for a high end jacket this is too good of a deal to pass up. Can use it as the extra jacket you keep in the car, for emergencies, or permanently in the bottom of the pack.Mahalo, Sumo
