Thermodynamic Softshell Jacket - Men's

Hit the backcountry on a cold day and work up a huge sweat in the Columbia Men's Thermodynamic Softshell Jacket. It's OK, the breathable softshell material allows water vapor to leave the jacket so you'll stay warm and dry. Elastane construction gives the material stretch, so you movement won't be limited, and Omni-Heat thermal reflective material keeps you warm without adding bulk.

Bottom Line: Stay dry breaking a sweat.

I just erased my first response....

Medium will be a great size for you as an everyday jkt or as a midlayer for layering. if this will be an outer only, and you have long arms, try the large

My daily driver for half of the year

OmniHeat reflective? for a clean and sophisticated looking jacket to open up to reveal a wall of "chrome dots" surpised me at first. I started wearing it in November 09 and it is my daily driver now. It is light enough to grab for travel, clean enough to dress it up, and super durable to keep it crisp over time. It breathes and regulates temperature better that you'd expect for a softshell and i forget it's on when I'd normally shed any other jacket. the outer is treated with OmniShield, making it super water resistant and, luckily for me, stain resistant as well. In short --- I dig it.

What is the diference betwin the Heat elite and the Tremodynamics

What is the diference betwin the Heat elite and the Tremodynamics jacket? Wich one is more appropriate to wear during fall/winter?

The Heat Elite is an insulated fleece that is windproof. It has both OmniHeat insulation as well as OmniHeat reflective detail

The Thermodynamic Softshell is a softshell with OmniHeat reflective detail only, and no insulation otherwise.

Both tout OmniShield DWR repellancy and are 3-point interchange compatible. the Heat Elite will stadup to lower temps better on its own, whereas the ThermoDynamic will need a little more insulation on the coldest days

Looks Like A Good Jacket

By:
March 26, 2011

I ordered two of these jackets, medium and large. They were both good quality and I did not see any defects. Unfortunately the large was too large and the medium was a little short. I am 6'01", 170lbs, and pretty darn skinny. The medium was a tad tight around the shoulders but still fit with a shirt, tie, and sweater. If it was longer it would have been great. The jacket was brand new so it was a little stiff. After some wear it should hopefully soften up. I didn't get to test the Omni Heat feature but the concept seems sound. It felt comfortable and non-metallic. The only feature that seems questionable is the storm flap over the zipper. It isn't necessary and made the jacket stiffer when trying it on. But it looked pretty streamlined when I was wearing it.

The so-called "Guru" photos are pictures of the Heat Elite Jacket and not the Thermodynamic jacket correct? Someone should correct these misleading photos. The Thermodynamic doesn't have pit zips right?

Better than the Apex Bionic

By:
November 7, 2010

After reading and trying both jackets, I decided to go for this super elegant (black) and crisp jacket. I have so far enjoy it very much because of how versatile it is.

I felt the Apex Bionic was a bit short and it was not as warm as the thermodynamic.

It is a stiff at the beginning but very comfortable after a few weeks.

Try it and be suprised!!

This would be great for spring skiing - when it's a bit warmer. Softshell's aren't the best insulators and if you tried to ski wearing this jacked in the dead of winter you would be pretty chilly. The omni heat liner will help, and if you layer up a lot under this jacket you might be able to get away with skiing in the 20s and 30s while wearing it.

Disappointed

By:
March 1, 2011

Nice styling from a good manufacturer but the fit and feel fell short. The sleeves were too tight and the fabric has NO stretch like most soft shells. Made it uncomfortable to move in, let alone be active like spring skiing. THe interior metallic lining may work well (didn't try it) but felt terrible next to bare arms, you would need full length shirts. The chest pocket would only be big enough for money or credit cards, not glasses or gear.

There are three points to tackle:
- There are no vents
- it is a fantastic wind barrier
- it holds up very well over time.

In a review I wrote below, I can only add that after 7 washes, it is still very water resistant and all of the OmniHeat reflective dots are still in tact. This is true on the most abrasion-proneareas, and even on the hips and cuffs

Best fit

By:
January 22, 2011

I checked out a few different softshells and definitely liked this the best. It comes down longer than the NF apex jacket and is more slim fitting as well which I like. Comfortable, stylin, and keeps you pretty warm yet breathable so you don't get too hot.

What sort of temperatures will you be able to wear this jacket

What sort of temperatures will you be able to wear this jacket in? Will it really work (on it's own, not adding multiple layers) in the 10-30 degree range? Also, how does it compare to the Columbia Heat Elite (advantages/disadvantages)? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info on both jackets, Jeff. Very helpful! The Thermodynamic does seem to be a bit "cleaner." Sitting outside for football was actually on my mind. It sounds like the Thermodynamic will get to about freezing before extra layers are needed, while the Heat Elite gets an extra 10 degrees or so. I tried them both on, and the arms on the Heat Elite seemed a bit longer as well (not a good thing, in my case). It's hard to judge the warmth of a jacket when the insulation is so thin, but that's precisely what I am looking, so your info was very helpful!

this does not have the insulation the Heat Elite has. this is only Omni Heat reflective (the dots) and geared to compliment the offering. I personally shose this for hte cleaner lines and lack of bulk. I did not choose this for a layering piece, I will have you know. with a base layer and a LS Tshirt, I was fine with this jkt in 15F for a football game last year. sitting still and slugging beers is no way to generate heat. I was fine

Okay insulation, Compromise on Quality

By:
January 22, 2011

I got this jacket from backcountry with big hopes. What I needed was a thin jacket that'd be able to handle 40 F weather with just a t-shirt underneath for casual use. After doing my research, I decided on this softshell for the good price and new silver lining it had.

While the jacket does an okay job for the use I described above, quality is not up to par - at least not up to that of marmot or mountain hardwear. The plastic cover on the velcro cuff came off, which resulted in an awkward look while walking (the plastic piece loose on one end wobbling). Secondly, the plastic zipper pull with the columbia logo on broke apart. That's a minor issue but still irritating. Returning most likely...

I left my house today in 25 degrees, light snow, a polo shirt and this jacket. I will be in temps as high as 45F and low as -5F by midnight tonight. this jacket offers warmth and temperature management like no other feature set from the other guys. It has a distinct advantage over the others... not just and edge.

as for the water resistance, this jacket is quiet, unlike many membrane softshells. It has yet to wet out on me and I am in the 14th month of using it. As I mention in the review, it is my daily driver ESPECIALLY on travel days

Its all about wearing it inside out!!

By: Backcountry.com Employee
January 25, 2011

This jacket is pretty warm. I must say the fit is a little on the slim side, which is no problem to me cuz everyone knows that tight is the fashion now. Plus if you flip it inside out you look like a bad ass with a shiny coat.......
