Stuff your backcountry kit into the Columbia Storm Patrol Ski Pack, and head into the mountains. Built from Columbia’s Omni-Shield 420D nylon, this bag will still look new after you rip through some tree branches to find a stash of untracked snow. A drainage port in the shovel pocket comes in handy when there’s no time to defrost your gear after doing an avy check. Pockets on the Columbia Storm Patrol Ski Pack’s hip-belt keep your sunscreen and two-way radio close at hand. Columbia built the Storm Patrol Ski Pack to Mt. Hoods Ski Patrol’s specifications, but you don’t have to ski for a living to appreciate its performance.

Bottom Line: A pack built to the demands of Mt. Hood’s Ski Patrol.

Like the other reviewers, I'm using the patrol version of this pack for patrolling. I am coming away from a patrol vest, and was skeptical about moving to the pack. I am loving it. I like the back access and like the front shovel compartment. While I wish it had a pack cover, reality is that in heavy snow, it is staying dry inside, so it hasn't been needed. (I haven't tried it on a rain day yet.) With avy gear, I haven't been comfortable leaving it on for the chair ride, so I've been taking it off every ride. Bottom Line: I highly recommend this pack for backcountry skiing and patrolling.

Storm Patrol Pack after the storm

By:

I was curious as to how this pack would do after a day in an all out blizzard given that it doesn't have a pack cover. The pack performed perfectly. All of the inside contents were completely dry after 8+ hours in less than ideal conditions.

Great pack

I love this pack.

Like the other reviewer, I have the Ski Patrol version (w/white cross). The 'butterfly' opening feature is great because I can lay it open on the snow and have immediate visibility and access to all of my first aid gear. The outer pocket is good for carrying av gear on snow days. A nice feature is the drain hole in the bottom of the outer pocket so that you can shove gear back in the pocket and not worry about melt water puddling inside the pack. There are also several quick access compartments that I use for BSI, CPR gear, food, etc.

Without av gear it's low profile enough to keep on your back when riding the chair lift. On the patrol version, the white cross easily clips off so I can use the pack when I'm not patrolling, too. It can also accommodate a hydration bladder - a feature I have not used but plan to come spring time.

The one thing I wish it had was better functioning compression straps to cinch down when I don't have my shovel in the pack, but this is really a nit since, as mentioned, it is keeps a low profile when not stuffed.

Overall a great pack.

Loving the storage capacity of this pack. I'm easily able to store medical supplies, climbing skins and lift evac equipment.

Feature-rich pack

This is my patrol pack of choice for the 09/10 patrol season at Bear Valley, CA. The pack has many great features (fleece lined goggle pocket, enclosed avy tool pocket that fits shovel, probe and snow saw), but my favorite is that the back panel unzips entirely so that you can completely open up the pack from the back and lay it open on the snow as a work space - keeping gloves and supplies off of the snow. You'll definitely appreciate this when reaching the top of the skin track - as you can easily stow your skins and grab water/food. The side pockets are also great to store quick need items (cpr mask and gloves in my case). If you spend any time on lift served terrain, you'll appreciate that the pack is not too wide, making getting on and off a chairlift more manageable. I prefer to a-frame my skis, but they can also be carried diagonally. My one wish is for a built-in pack cover like the ones you'll find on the Traverse Rescue patrol packs. Overall, a great pack.
