Columbia gave the Men's Steens Mountain Full Zip Jacket a trim fit for easy layering under your ski jacket. Polyester MTR fleece supplies the warmth you need for all-day skiing, and pill-resistant properties add durability. Wear this Columbia fleece alone when the temps drop in town or stash it in your pack as a just-in-case jacket for mountain hikes.

Bottom Line: Zip up the Columbia Steens Mountain Sweater and warm up.

Nice for around town use.

By:

Super soft, and comfy fleece. Looks pretty good too. Got it as a gift and fell in love with it. However wasn't quite warm or versatile enough to make the backcountry kit. Casual cut not great for active pursuits. Leaked like a sieve with any sort of breeze. Pockets are situated low for casual use but mostly inaccesible with backpack on. If your looking for an affordable comfortable fleece for casual use, look no further. For serious hiking, backpacking, climbing you'll probably want to go a little higher end.

Great under a shell

By:
December 26, 2010

Like any fleece, it's not windproof. That's what your shell is for. What it is, is a good, inexpensive, warm fleece. Sizing runs true, size up if you layer up beneath.

I got this as an insulation layer under a softshell, and together, they hold up to any 3-way jacket at half the price.

Great Insulation

By:
July 20, 2011

I use this jacket as my insulating layer during late spring and early fall backpacking. I am very happy with the purchase, obviously fleece has its downsides, but for the price this jacket outperforms much of the competition. It also looks good and has a durable feel. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good fleece jacket.

It did fine for me in the Snowies in Wyoming. I just used it and a base layer at night and the early morning. I suspect that some of the viewing audience will need something warmer. [I only wear a hoodie when I sit in the woods and hunt in the winter in Michigan.] But it was a good basic fleece for a good price.

Nice, reasonably priced fleece.

By:

Got a medium for my husband who is almost 6 feet tall; and somewhere around 170lbs. It fits him well and he wears it often. It is a nice layer to throw on while inside during the winter; and it is appropriate for fall, spring, and even winter when it's not quite cold enough for the wool winter coat. Price was great too!

After 5 years: durable, simple, great

By:
January 10, 2010

I've had this fleece ("Gremlin" color) for about 5 years. I bought it because it was only about $25 and never expected it to last because it was so cheap and not a "premium" brand. To my shock, I have worn this fleece probably over a hundred times, washed it dozens of times, and it is in very good shape. After 3 years, I made it my "junk fleece" and started wearing it to the gym or to get dirty at work (hospital). I stuffed it carelessly into my bag and sometimes left it on the floor of my apartment for days. I often washed it after only one day of wear. Yet it barely aged! It basically does not pill. I have worn it skiing many times under a nice Gore-Tex shell and it suffices on days over 25 degrees with a single baselayer. I'd say it's almost (but not quite) the weight of a 200 weight Polartec fleece. I've just "replaced it" with a Marmot Polartec 200 weight fleece for a little more warmth and style, but not because the Steens is worn out. Functionally, this fleece is ridiculously, insanely good value. I can't say all Columbia products are super durable, but this one is.

By:

My Columbia "Fleece" is a constant companion. Being 6'7" and 285 lbs. means that finding stuff that fits is sometimes a challenge. This XXL Tall is right on the price, the fit and the durability. I enjoy wearing it alone, or as a layer and don't look forward to the day I wear it out!

Columbia Steens Mountain Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

By:
March 17, 2011

This is the second one of these jackets I have owned. This one seems to be a bit less beefy than the one I bought about a year ago and so in my opinion is not quite an honest midweight fleece. It's a basic fleece jacket not very fancy. No adjustable cuff closures at sleeves but there is elastic in the cuffs. I am skinny and bought the large size to get the length since I am tall and there is alot of open space at the cuff closures around my wrists. The integral adjustment cords in the lower garment seam provides secure closure at the bottom. I don't use this jacket for backpacking. I have a very light weight down jacket for that. I wear this fleece around the house and even sleep in it at home for some extra warmth and comfort. The garment satisfies my needs and that's why I bought another one. Would be a five star for a cheap basic fleece jacket but the fabric is a bit flimsy in my opinion.

Just what I needed

By:
December 10, 2007

I'm a Critical Care Registered Nurse and I needed a jacket that was light enough for the extremely MILD Florida winters yet comfortable enough to wear while doing chest compressions for 30 minutes and "professional" appearing enough to wear all night while at work in front of families and patients. This jacket was perfect. 5 of us ordered together and every one of us is extremely satisfied with our purchase. The jacket is mature enough to wear at the patients bedside and doesn't get in the way when work gets busy. The BLACK color is slightly DULL compared to the HEATHER color, but our hospital requires is all black (or white). Love the jacket!!

Great not-so-serious jacket

By:
December 15, 2009

The jacket is sized large and loose. I'm 5'7"/165, and the small is roomy. (I can actually wear a boy's XL comfortably, but I wanted the drawcord hem and elastic cuffs of the adult model.) In performance-cut Columbia jackets, medium is tight on me.

Bonsai is a great color, but the red looks almost pink. Also, I wouldn't trust the jacket to be rugged. Suits my needs perfectly, though, and I'm completely satisfied.

perfect casual fleece

By:
December 22, 2009

I bought this as a gift for my father. He is a summer hiker and keeps it to mild weather, but he does live in some pretty cold temps (in the teens occasionally in winter). The fleece is very soft and he loved the bonsai color. He is near 6 ft and probably 170; bought the large knowing he'd like a looser fit. Basically folks this is a perfect casual jacket for him! If you're a technical fleece kind of person you probably need to keep looking; although this would probably do well in mild weather. My father travels a lot and this coat is just what he needs. His wife has a similar one (for women) that she has had for years and she was excited he received on like hers.

Excellent, though not a heavyweight fleece

By:
June 19, 2011

This is a great jacket, high quality and nicer than the fancy brands, not to mention a quarter of the price. A word about the "weight" though: The product description says 360g, which I believe translates to 200 "weight" fleece. However, this jacket feels more like 100+ weight. I know because I've had to buy a lot of 200 weight fleece for a camping trip, and this jacket is a lot lighter & thinner than the other fleece specifically labeled 200 weight. Get it if you are looking for a basic layering piece for everyday wear, or you intend to layer a heavier jacket over it for extensive outdoor use in cold weather.

One Excellent Lightweight Layer

By:
January 23, 2011

Purchased on a whim due to a $20 customer loyalty certificate BackCountry.com provided. It is hard to go wrong with a $10 Columbia fleece. It makes an excellent layer under a separate Columbia shell I was given. The fleece is lighter weight than my other one which makes it easy to layer. Really am enjoying it and would recommend for similar purposes to others.

This is a basic fleece for a reasonable price. It does not have any fancy features--just the basics like two packets and a drawstring bottom. Personally, I think that calling them a jacket is a bit of a stretch. To me, these have always been a midlayer.

Columbia Fleece Jacket

By:
January 9, 2009

I bought not one, but five of these jackets for the men in my life at Christmas. My boyfriend has had one for ages, and he had asked for a newer on in a darker color. Though the Columbia Steens Mtn Full Zip jacket is not heavy, it is great to have on hand for short trips into the cold, and for moderately cold winter weather in general. We live in S.C., where it doesn't get too close to 32 degrees on a regular basis, and this jacket is perfect for our weather. It does not have a hood, as asked in an earlier review, but it does have two side pockets, and the fleece is quite plush and soft. The older version of the jacket my boyfriend owns has stayed in great shape over the past two years he's had it. Additionally, I would recommend this jacket to anyone wanting to use it for extra warmth during the spring and fall. I suspect it makes a great shell and a great liner for ski jackets. It's a great value if you buy it so inexpensively from Backcountry.

Unfortunately I ran into this problem with the vest style purchased elsewhere...ordered a small and it's closer to a medium or large. I just bought another at the local mall, size small, and fits like a glove. I tried to shrink the other one in warm/hot water and dryer, but unlike cotton this didn't work. Great product of course, just disappointed in the varying sizes

Hey, just wanted to say that Backcountry is awesome! Super fast shipping! Great prices! Great quality! I bought the Columbia Steens fleece zip-up for my brother for Chrsitmas. He takes a tall size which is hard to find. I had never purchased Columbia gear before and was thrilled to see they offer tall sizes. When it came in the mail I immediately held it up to some of my husband's tall shirts and stuff to get a look at the length. Honestly, it was shorter than most other brands of tall-sized clothing, but at the same time it was indeed longer than regular length clothing, but all in all definitely good bang for the buck!

Colombia Mens Fleece Jacket

By:
January 9, 2009

Bought this jacket for my son for Christmas, he loved it. Its an ideal jacket for those cool winter months that we have down here in Florida but not so warm that you want to throw it off after a short amount of time. It is extremely good quality, comes in many colors and I would highly recommend purchasing it. Great company:)

January 8, 2009

Ordered one for 9 family members at the holidays! From the 6 month old to the tall men,the shorter woman and the roly-poly woman, all fit and were snuggly warm. The full length zipper allows good temp control and the pockets are good. Great items.

Awesome Fleece

By:
April 19, 2010

One of the absolute best products that I have ever purchased. Seriously, it is about the best $30 bucks that I have ever spent. I live in Florida and the weight of this fleece is perfect. Even down in the 30's, I just throw my Marmot Precip jacket over this and I am good to go. It is lightweight and packs small, just about perfect if you ask me.

This is a great jacket as long as you know what you're getting. It's not for super cold days and it won't stop the wind, but it's a nice comfortable jacket for moderately chilly days. I'm 6'3" 195lbs and I got the Men's L-Tall. Fits perfectly, not too long but great coverage.

This item has all the benefits of Layers and has worked well for myself and associates in the Mountains and my work with Horses in the show ring ... I recommend it to anyone looking for a good fit in performance and durability.

Just what I needed

By:
April 14, 2010

I was looking for a casual fleece, full-zip, to wear around town on cooler days that wasn't overly bulky. Based on previous reviews, I ordered a medium and it fits snugly (I'm 5'11" and 200 lbs.) which is what I was looking for. It seemed a little small at first, but I think I was just getting used to it. The wife says it looks good on me, so that's worth a fifth star all on its own.

Yes, the Fall 2008 model of this jacket should work with that. I just picked up a new Steens full zip and it is NOT compatible with my older Bugaboo - the zippers have different sized teeth.

The Steens comes below the hip line, it is a light weight, but versatile jacket. The fit isn't relaxed, but allows for layering underneath.

Great Jacket

By:
June 5, 2007

My husband has broad shoulders so he wears a size large or x-large even though he is not very tall so most jackets can fit him more like a dress than a jacket. This fleece has plenty of room in a large and was just the right length! Very please, great quality, warm, comfortable and the lovely Papaya color is unique without being too loud… He almost lost it while in Alaska and we were prepared to come home and buy another.

I purchased this jacket for my mother at Christmas as the original one I had ordered (from a different company) was not what I expected. This jacket got to me within a few days and I still had it in time for Christmas. My mother loves the jacket and the colour of it, she says it is so soft and comfortable. Thank you so much for your great help and service.

IN LOVE

By:
January 27, 2010

I originally bought this jacket for my boyfriend as a christmas gift and when I got it in the mail, I was shocked that the quality of this jacket was extremely high yet the price is extremely low. I loved his jacket so much that I bought myself one. He wears his jacket almost every day and has requested me to buy him the same jacket but in a different color for his birthday coming up. I would definitely suggest the male and female version of this jacket!

Columbia Mountain Jacket

By:
January 6, 2010

I bought the blue and green (bonsai) fleece jackets for my husband who needs something warm, but comfortable at work. We somehow lost his older jackets and he was lost without them. So, when he received these two for christmas he was elated. The bonsai green is very sharp looking.

Great Price and Great Quality

By:
January 13, 2010

I got this fleece for my husband and he loves it - we are huge fans of Columbia because they make great products that last. This is my husband's 2nd Steens Mountain fleece and his other one is still going strong after 5 years, but of course the fleece isn't as soft after that long. I got him the bonsai color and he likes it but the actual color is a lot brighter than the picture online - it's almost a lime color. This is my first purchase from Backcountry and they did a great job with the price and speedy shipping.

Be wary of size

By:
January 16, 2009

I bought this jacket for my son for christmas. He loves the jacket but for a 3XL tall is is very short. I wanted to send it back but he had already worn it. Mayby the length should be listed when buying the garment as this is obviously shorter than other tall garments I have purchased.
