Before you depart for the border crossing, make sure that you're wearing the Columbia Silver Ridge Long-Sleeve Shirt. If the guard looks at you quizzically after you produce your passport, roll up the Silver Ridge's sleeves and be thankful for the shirt's Omni-Wick technology that helps evaporate sweat away from your body. And if the border guard starts asking a few too many questions, you can suddenly ‘remember’ the extra fifty you cached in one of the front flap pockets.

    Better than expected

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I bought this as a gift for my brother for a trip to Ethiopia. He was hiking in the desert and to the Erta Ale volcano and he needed coverage from the sun and something that wicked away sweat and dried quickly. After spending many hours in the hot sun and hiking around, here is his feedback:

The Columbia Silver Ridge shirt did it's job and more. The material was comfortable against my skin, it dried quickly and was easy to remove any smell after washing. Additionally, the higher than normal collar helped protect my neck further than a normal shirt. I went with a bone color due to temperature but I could have easily done just as well with a darker color.

The fit was true to size - 5'10" about 170lbs and wore a medium. It was slightly tapered in the body, the arms are slightly longer and fit me better in the shoulders. Overall I was really pleased with the performance and attention to detail.

    Great Product

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

This is an item found on my Dad's xmas list item each year and it was a hit once again. I purchased the Carbon color (This is a Blue, not grey) and he loves it. He lives in South Carolina and it is the perfect weight for any outdoor activity he tends to do in the fall, winter, or early spring. This item has plenty of length in the torso and arms and does not appear baggy on him. I know others have complained about the tricky fit, but it fits him wonderfully and he has been pleased with this item year after year. Quality wise, I also have not heard any complaints from him. He tends to take care of his items so they probably last a little longer than most (washing cold and hang dry). The material has held up to days of fishing, hiking, camping, around town use, and travel. He has only requested one each year for additional colors to add to his collection.

    Great but has a lifespan

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I've had mine for 3.5 years now and have worn it a ton fishing. It is starting to pill on the armpits, chest and lower back now, which is weird to me for this type of shirt. I will be buying another one because the fit is great and it's more comfortable than my $90 ex-officio shirt which is awesome.

    Great Shirt

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XXL

I purchased this in the carbon color. It's really a blue, more than a grey as the name suggests, but it looks great anyway. It looks great and fits great!

    Tricky sizing but awesome shirt

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large

I'm about 6'4" and 195 pounds. I tried the large of this shirt (I wear large pretty much... always) but it seemed really baggy and awkward on me. Now I have the medium. The fit seems more skinny on me, which I like. I'm not sure if there is much difference between the large and the medium in terms of length. If I raise my hands above my head you can see a little bit of my stomach but that happens with all shirts.

    Runs Large

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large

I ordered a small and found the sleeves and overall shirt were too long. Otherwise I liked it and would have considered keeping it if a smaller size were available. If you prefer a slimmer fit check out the North Face Cool Horizon Woven Shirt which I liked better.

    Decent Shirt

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have two of these shirts for hiking. They work well...do what they are intended to do which is protect from the sun, and keep me cool even with the sleeves rolled down. Construction of the Silver Ridge shirts do not seem to be as bomb proof as the Silver Ridge Shorts. They are light weight, dry quickly, and keep you cool.....what more could you ask for. These did not wow me like some other gear that I have....which leaves me with wanting to try other shirts. All in all....a good shirt, especially when you can find them on sale.

    Good Shirt

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small

I bought it for my PCT thru-hike this year. I need it to hold up to daily trail abuse, including a backpack. I think it'll work for the purpose. I ordered the medium size - I'm 5'11" and 172 lbs with 34 waist. I found it a bit tight under the arms, so returned it for a large. I plan to wear a tech weight merino ss pullover underneath on a daily basis.

Good looking, quick drying and soft

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Wore the shirt extensively through the Central American rain forest.

It looks great, dries quickly and best of all- doesn't feel thick and nylony like some other similar products.

There are two small vertical ventilation strips.

Buttoned up, the sleeves are still below the elbow.

Regarding sizing- I'm 5"11 (1.8m), 185lb (85kg), athletic build. I got the medium which was mostly a good fit but was a little bit too narrow around the upper back.

Good looking, quick drying and soft

    Keeps you cool

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

This shirt seems to regulate core temperature pretty well, keeps you from sweating too much in hot weather, dries pretty quickly. It looks really nice as well.

A downside is the texture of the face material, which seems a bit scratchy.

All-in-all a great shirt for summer hiking, fishing, paddling, lounging

    Great in the Heat!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large

Great feel to these shirts. I was just in 100 degree temps and the shirt actually made me more comfortable. They do wrinkle bad when packed unfortunately and need a little ironing or it looks like you slept in the shirt. The only reason I did not give it five stars.

They do run big for me, I usually wear an extra large and had to return to get large. Backcountry is of course great about returns!!!

    Columbia Silver Ridge Shirt Rocks!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I own two Silver Ridge shirts and have worn them on over 250 miles of backpacking trips in the last three years. These shirts are absolutely great during fall alpine backpacking trips. When temps very from mid-40's to mid-60's you can use various configurations of sleeves and front buttons to adapt to the environment. Each shirt has "pilled" a little where mesh from backpack hip belt has rubbed over time. At 8.5 oz (size medium), the Silver Ridge long sleeve is only slightly heavier than a t-shirt. Highly recommended!

Pic shows my green Silver Ridge (with sons) during hike in Colorado's Rahwah Wilderness in 2010:

    Columbia Silver Ridge Shirt Rocks!

    Almost Perfect

Have last years model (the one Karl G reviews) and just got the newer issue. They fixed every complaint of his, and then some. Button is hidden on the sleeve, and works perfectly (never really had a big problem the other way, but the update is a plus). The venting is no longer an open mesh panel that you can get caught on the wrong side of (hated that as well). Also added an extending flap for additional neck coverage on the collar, shaped the cuffs for better hand coverage, and tacked down the outside edge of the pockets where they poked out on the last years version.

Super lightweight and quick drying. The fabric is a really soft texture, feels great. It looks good in the office and works in the backcountry. Will be getting a couple more.

To get 5 stars, columbia needs to add a bit of stretch, either in all of the fabric, or maybe just in specific panels. Add a odor/antimicrobial finish to the shirt. Id prefer a small snap instead of the velcro on the pockets

Nice, Simple, made for larger blokes

The Review by Karl G must be for the 2011 style shirt which has the button on the sleeve strap. The 2012 fixed this problem and put the button on the arm where it is covered by a small flap of fabric to protect the button. for the price this is a great shirt definately the lowest cost option for a good outdoor shirt with roll up sleeves. I have a 2011 small and childs XL as well as a 2012 small. I am 5ft8 and 135lbs. My only real complaint is that these shirts are not made for people with an athletic or slim build. Definately designed for the "normal American" The kids XL is slightly too small and the 2011 Small is definately too large in the body, length is fine though. The 2012 Version small is quite a bit smaller and better fitting though could have a more athletic fit. I used these shirts while traveling through India this may where it averaged 110 degrees F almost everyday. The wicking and quick dry ability is awesome, they stood up to quite a bit of abuse, the only damage was the 2012 edition is permanently crumpled in one area where the waist belt on my heavy pack was for quite a few days. All in all good, not the best but probably the best value unless you find something else on sale.

I picked up a similar style Under Armour shirt for 5 bucks at a thrift store. I wore it backpacking and after 3 or 4 days the chest pockets began to rub and irritate my skin. There are mesh vents under them which were the perpetrators. Anyone had similar problems with the Silver Ridge? How does it feel under a heavy pack over a long time?
