The Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts feature a self-belt for a worry-free fit and a UPF 30 treatment, which protects you from harmful UV rays. Stuff these lightweight Columbia shorts in their packable pocket and slip them in your backpack or luggage—they'll hardly take up any room.
Bottom Line: Wear the Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Shorts when backpacking is the name of the game.
I've worn these shorts for several weekends now for various activites and would get another pair if it wasn't such a pain (cost) to ship stuff to HI. I also agree with peter20... about the included belt. It's adequate, but I usually wear them with the Patagonia Tech Web Belt. The belt loops do accommodate the wider Patagonia belt and is a much better option in my opinion. Also, I purchased the size medium for my 33-34" waist.
Very light, lotsa pockets, nice removable belt, water resistant and comfortable. I would have liked some drawstrings, too, but ya can't have it all. I liked them enough to buy a second pair.

I gave these a try after my wife bought a pair of Columbia Omni-Dry shorts and fell in love with them. Well, I fell in love with mine as well. So much so, I bought a second pair. They are incredibly light and comfortable. They are also durable and dry in a heartbeat. The only issue I've noted is that the hipbelts on some of my packs can loosen the included belt over time. Every now and then I have to cinch up the belt. Overall a terrific pair of shorts.
Live and play in Southeast Florida. These shorts are cool and dry quickly when wet. Stand up very well to everyday use. Have 8 pair and the only flaw is the occasional button thats not sewn on properly.
I bought one pair a year ago. After wearing them everywhere, I fell in love with how light and airy they are. They dry out very fast after sweating or rain. I just bought 3 more pairs. Soon, these will be my only shorts. FYI, the free belt slips when worn correctly, but holds very tightly when inside-out (buckle facing wearer).
I am buying my second pair since these are honestly the best shorts I've ever owned. The construction is tough, I've gone everywhere, tortured them and they are still holding up great, aside from a few loose threads(extensive beating). They are extremely comfortable, due to the light weight and thin material, sometimes I don't even notice I'm wearing anything. They dry really quick, great for washing in the sink when traveling, or going to the river for a swim. The zippered front and back pocket are GREAT, gives a peace of mind when being active or in an unfamiliar city. The belt is a great touch, although the tightness loosens after a while, a quick tug on the belt strap and you're good to go!Overall, I love the way I look in them, they sit right above the knees, and look really good.
These are the best shorts I've ever owned. I got one of each color. They are perfect for traveling because they are lightweight and packable. Highly recommend.
These shorts are so light and comfortable that you hardly even know they're on. I've used them for walking and bike riding and so far no problems at all. I would order another pair without a doubt.
These shorts are great for hiking, swimming, and just casual wear. Roomy but not goofy looking. They dry in minutes when they get wet and it is hard to get them dirty, it simply doesn't seem to stick to the material. Plenty of secure pocket space without looking like a pair of shorts with more pockets than needed. These are great outdoor shorts and I highly recommend.
I broke these in, while hiking the High and Western Tatras in Poland. Fit nice and loose, no snugness! Driad really quick. Held up without ripping, while sliding on rock face more times than I care to recount. Very lightweight and pack stuffable.
These are the nicest shorts I've found for fishing and general water activities. I've fished all day in them and went out to dinner wearing them and the missus thought I'd dressed up for her.
I was looking for a pair of light weight cargo pants - lots of pockets, but cooler than the heavy poplin shorts. These shorts are perfect. Even the belt loops are capable of taking a "real" belt if you need to carry heavy objects. I bought a second pair.
I bought my first pair at a sporting goods store in Florida over Christmas of last year. I liked them so much I bought two more pair here for almost $10 a pair savings. They are light and pack without wrinkling and dry very very fast if they get wet. They are my favorite shorts for weekends on the boat.
So far I have tested the pants on one rally, and they have performed as expected. Lightweight fabric keeps me cool, and mobile in the tropical Barbados sun, and they dry quickly when wet. Even the belt is lightweight..great attention to detail.
Great pockets, which allow me to stow all essential on-body navigational rally gear. I suspect this is the first of many pairs!
Whoa! Why didn't someone tell me about these shorts before now. The shorts are extremely comfortable, and the they are the lightest pair of shorts that I have ever worn. If you ever wanted pockets, these shorts have them. Great all around. I'm ready to buy another two pairs.
I live in Panama and this is the second set in 2 years. I wear them everyday because they are lightweight, rugged and easy to care for. They are fantastic.
It's cool in hot weather, lightweight & dries quickly if you get wet. A great pair of shorts. I've already ordered others. There is a small, zippered pocket on the right side that is really too small to be of any practical use. A slight negative.
These pants are fantastic. You will want to buy more of them after you try them on for the first time. These have to be the lightest shorts i have ever had on. It wont even feel like your wearing anything at all. Plus there amazingly comfortable and store down incredibly small into its own back pocket which is a great feature. You will never think twice about taking them anywhere.
The shorts look really neat on this website, so I ordered them. Despite the synthetic fabric (normall I like cotton) I probably still would have kept these shorts but for one small detail: the color was a blend of wasabi, used napkins, and vomit. It was "suede" I think - not sure how the other ones look as I sent these bad-boys back for a refund. I am only reviewing them now because backcountry sent me an email asking me to.
In conclusion: try getting any color other than "suede" and maybe you'll do better than me.
Very light, lotsa pockets, nice removable belt, water resistant and comfortable. I would have liked some drawstrings, too, but ya can't have it all. more...
