Yes, and then some. 40 degrees is pretty warm. I suggest using a layering system with a baselayer, a midlayer, and a shell of some kind. Then you can use a down jacket when you are at rest, or not moving for some time.

to address the first question, this will not zip into the component shells. the zipper length and guage are different. It is lower profile to layer well with a shell or component piece

anyone have this yet? I saw this in a local store, the nylon fabric is thicker and heavier feeling than other jackets. How well does this insulate, does this Omni-heat actually work?

the shell is built with some more duarability than many puffy jackets out there. is is a comfy piece with not too much sheen and it insulates very well. The OmniHeat is proven effective and is certainly here to stay. Omniheat does a great job at leveling the huge temperature flux with exertion in the elements.

Short answer... It works very well

I assume by "minus 20 degrees" you mean celsius? This jacket would probably work at that temperature with a good shell over the top and a warm base layer. If you mean -20 F then you're going to need more. It also depends on what you'll be doing. Standing around, downhill skiing, hiking. If you'll be working hard then you'll stay warmer and not need as much clothing.
