Pull out the Columbia Hail Tech Jacket from your pack when Thor starts to sharpen his thunderbolts and an ominous blanket covers the sky. This soft woven waterproof fabric keeps shields you from the storm’s wrath without making you feel like you’re wearing a cardboard box so you can move quickly and comfortably on the trail. Fully sealed seams and waterproof zip pockets keep important stuff dry, and an adjustable storm hood adds extra coverage. If you start to heat up on the move, flap vents allow airflow without getting your under layers wet. Keep the Earth gods happy with this jacket’s 57% recycled lining, so hopefully Thor won’t use you for target practice.
Bottom Line: Stay dry during ungodly and godly storms.
This will work for biking in the rain and I would go for the XXL. I would rather have it a little loose for the bike than restrictive. If it is a little large you can also layer under it if needed.
As far as rain jackets go, this one is up there. It is surprisingly breathable, performing almost as well as Membrain Strata and besting by quite a bit the MHW Conduit laminate. Columbia doesn't give numbers, but my guess is that it's breathable to about 15,000g and it's fully seam taped, so it's completely waterproof as well. This jacket beats out its predecessor by quite a bit as it is now part of the titanium series, is seam taped, and has waterproof zippers instead of flaps overtop. My only qualms with this jacket are the length, as it is really, really long - small drops below my butt and I am 5'9" with a longer-than-average torso, and the lining, which can make it more comfortable, but means that it's heavier than most other jackets. Small weighs almost a pound. It's purely aesthetic, but the outside is a smooth fabric, not the rough ones that most companies use, personally, I prefer the rough, but that's me. Four stars because of the weight and length.
My daughters and I have the Columbia Turning Point jacket for women (you no longer carry it, but Sierra Trading Post does, if you want a picture - I found ours at Ross) and I am looking for something similar for my husband - waterproof, breathable and with a hood that folds or zips into the collar. Suggestions? The Hail Tech's hood doesn't look like it's "stowable". Don't want to spend a fortune - prefer $60 -$70 or less. He already has a Columbia fleece, so a Columbia rainjacket might work best for layering.
the Hail Tech hood rolls up and gets out of the way. What this model aslo has is minimalism without giving up quality, necessities or simplicity. When I could buy a jkt for double the price of this one for accounts, I still reached this one for the bang for the buck/weight/space.

Got this jacket for my fiance. He loves it. It is interchangeable with any of Columbia's fleece jackets also featuring the interchange loops, thus allowing him to wear a fleece layer underneath. It is lightweight, but not flimsy and fits him perfect. He is on a boat all day much of the time and he loves that it keeps him dry in-between surface intervals, and the hood effectively covers his head and even protects his face. 5 stars.
Just picked up one of these and I am very pleasantly surprised! Omni-tech fabric is very soft and pliable - not crinkly at all. Very well constructed. Size is a big baggier than other similar jackets (think TNF Venture) but not so big as to need to downsize - nice casual fit. Nice zippers, great fitting hood. No pit zips but the underarms are vented, well protected under deep flaps.
Looking for the right fit: I own TNF Venture, but have to replace it due to wear and tear. I love the fit of it because of the sleeves, which according to sizing charts say they are only 35 inches, but feel way longer. Anyone know how the Hail tech fits through the arms? Point of reference, I am 6'3" & 195 and wear a lrg in the Venture.
this jacket is generous in the arms and will fit nicely in a Larger for you. I have a tremendous ape index, and my arms rarely fit jkts. this one fits me fine and i still have mobility
It depends on your wingspan, but I would direct you to a medium pretty readily. If you'd prefer more arm articulation and you have long arms, that would easily move you to the larger size.
I have to say, I have not yet worn this guy in the rain- so I can't speak to that. But I do know that it has the best fit of any rain jacket i've tried on.
I went to REI and a Columbia outlet store to try to find this jacket, but both stores did not carry it. I tried on some other jackets from Columbia while I was their, and everything I tried on felt bulky and large. So I was a little worried when I ordered this jacket, but man I love the way it fits.
Im a bit over 6 foot and around 145 pounds (lanky...) and the small fits great!
I will agree with what someone else already said about being slightly disappointed that the lining inside the black jacket is not blue as pictured, but I can live with it....
This jacket has a lining to it, so you could wear it alone depending on your tolerance to cold. I would probably suggest wearing at least a tee shirt underneath though.
I bought this one at a crazy discount a couple of months ago and been loving it ever since, I'm completely wet whenever I use, I like it SO much that I stop carrying and umbrella altogether, which in Costa Rica, is a big deal my friends.I wish I had a pair of pants and some Goretex shoes to be 100% waterproof. The pockets work like a charm, I even put my unprotected mobile there and nothing ever happens, LOVE IT.
I just tried on the North Face Venture jacket at a local store and loved it very light and seemed well constructed but I am still looking for a good value buy. This seems like a good jacket as well but can't find the weight anywhere. Is it light/breathable does anyone know the weight? The North Face jacket is only 379g
i own the venture jacket. while it's light, it's not nearly as light as my GoLite rain shell. i think i saved over 4 oz with my Golite. columbia gear isn't generally a minimalist design.
