Mountain weather can be fickle—be prepared.
We've all been there—the sun is shining, the temperature is perfect, and if it weren't for those few clouds on the ridge you wouldn't have a care in the world. If you've learned your lesson from this scenario, you'll pick up the Columbia Men's Evapouration Jacket because shortly after this it's going to rain, and you're going to be stuck in the rain. This Columbia jacket utilizes Columbia's Omni-tech waterproof shell with fully taped seams to keep you dry, but you can still keep your heart rate up because this rain jacket features Omni-wick evap lining, designed to disperse your body's moisture for easy evaporation. And with a design that easily packs into one of its hand pockets, this jacket easily fits into your day pack or backpacking pack so you'll be ready for when that cloud on the ridge turns into the storm over your head.

- Q & A
Fine for low activity use
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Medium
It's still a very good rain jacket and I'm a big fan of the look and fit, but I can't recommend this for hiking, backpacking, or any active use. I'm usually between a medium and a large, probably should have picked up a large for layering but this one still fits a fleece layer underneath just fine. Looks a little silly with a down jacket but works.
My main issue is that, and it's a common one with any waterproof layer, it just doesn't breathe well. I was soaked in light rain on a two day hike, but in sweat. Even with the pit zips fully open and the front half unzipped, no part of my shirt (or me) was dry. Not really impressed by Columbia's fabric outside of the waterproofing.
I also had a problem initially with the packable pocket zipper breaking, but it was an easy fix with some pliers. Just go easy on the zipper, try not to stretch the pocket too far when packing the jacket.
Good at keeping me dry
This baby is pretty good at keeping my dry. Wished the zipper was a bit flashier though, I love flashy zippers.
Keeps me dry
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This rain jacket does what it's supposed to. It's more maneuverable than some heavier rain coats without sacrificing waterproofing. The seams are all taped. I used it on a fishing trip and it handled the spray and light rain well. Drops bead and fall off. After the trip, I machine washed it. To test if it still worked, I wore it in the shower. Sure enough, couldn't find anywhere that was even damp on the inside.
This is a light jacket (11.6oz for large). For me, a hooded sweatshirt fits comfortably underneath for added warmth. The hood is large enough to keep my face dry, but there isn't a bill like some other rain jackets. The hood does tighten by a bungee. Sleeves tighten by velcro.
From my initial uses, this seems like a quality jacket for the price. It can be washed and still retains its waterproofing.
