Best Dam Down Jacket - Women's

We rely on down jackets on the coldest mountain days, but precipitation is down's biggest enemy: soggy feathers don't keep you very warm. So Columbia overcame this phenomenon by giving the Women's Best Dam Down Jacket a waterproof breathable, fully seam-sealed shell to seal rain and snow out. Then, to up the thermostat even more, an Omni-Heat thermal reflective lining reflects and retains your body heat inside the jacket. A drop tail keeps your lower back covered as you sit on the ski lift, and an adjustable storm hood keeps the snow off your face. When the sun peeks out from the clouds and things warm up, just open the underarm vents for a little fresh air.

Bottom Line: Warm as can be, even in the most dismal conditions.

I am looking at this jacket for Everest Base Camp and climbing

I am looking at this jacket for Everest Base Camp and climbing Kilimanjaro. Can you tell me if this a good jacket for this type of expedition or would the Mountain Hardwear SL be a better choice? Also, is it packable and what is the weight?

There are two huge differences between the two jackets you mention here...

The Best Dam Down Jacket has OmniTech... It is waterproof/breathable on the outer shell. The other jkt is not

This one also has a 700 fill (90/10) and it has OmniHeat reflective detail inside

... Making it the most efficient insulation and more breathable waterproof membrane on the market.

My choice would be the MHW Sub Zero SL, or even better yet, the Absolute Zero. It is packable/compressible, but that and weight aren't going to be so much a factor in your choices as staying warm and carrying whatever you need to do it. Leave room for base layers.

Great jacket

Very warm when needed, and the pit zips keep you from overheating. Excellent jacket for an alaskan winter expedition (though plenty of warm baselayers and layers are always recommended)

Go with the Mountain Hardwear...its a better jacket and more suited to your needs. This jacket is more for skiing, not mountaineering.

Lives up to its name

This is the warmest coat I have ever owned. It replaced an old woolrich heavy duty down jacket (which made me look like shamu)..but it was a warm jacket. This coat is so light, and so warm it is hard to believe. I live in this coat, under arm gussetts nice if i get too hot. Wrist bands took some getting used too and i wonder if they will hold up okay, but no cold air will get in there. What a wonderful coat!

Arctic Alaska

I went on a ski-in caribou hunt in Arctic Alaska (well above the arctic circle boundary) with this jacket. While it was too warm for the ski-in, when temperatures dropped, this jacket held its own.

What is the weight on the Women's Size Medium? I want to get this for long distance hiking (Mt. Rainier), and I am really trying to carry as little weight as possible. Any help on this would be very appreciated!

Light, Warm & Versatile

By:

This a great synthetic down jacket. It is warm without making you look like the Michelin Man and you'll never worry about feathers coming out of your jacket. It is also light and comes with built-in hand warmers that I love. It is also very wind and water resistant. My only wish is for a better way to secure the hood for windy conditions.

Great warmth, awesome temperature regulation

By:
November 24, 2010

This is the best jacket I've ever owned. The down provides incredible warmth, and the waterproof exterior makes it a functional ski jacket. I skied in sub-zero temps today and was warm and toasty. On warmer days I have been amazed at how well this jacket regulates heat, and the large pit zips dump excess heat remarkably well. I'm usually a small, but the x-small fit me better. Also, I would say the Deep Teal color is more like Navy. (Note for skiers: I am not sure if this is intended to be a ski jacket. There isn't a powder skirt, and the hood doesn't fit over my helmet. Both of those things are fine for me, but just so you know....)

Best Dam Down Jacket

Purchased for my wife and she has repeatedly commented on how warm it is without being bulky. I bought the elderberry color and it looks just like the picture. She loves it.

Is the Elderberry close to brown or more of a raspberry?

it is machine washable and using down-specific detergents will help. Line drying totally and then a light tumble dry with a few tennis balls will fuff it up again

Warm, but...

By:
December 18, 2010

Well, when I got the jacket I could immediately tell that it would be incredibly warm and waterproof. It runs true to size and is also very flattering for a 700 fill down jacket. However, I ended up returning it because the outer fabric didn't seem very strong and that it wouldn't last very long. I wanted to use it as a ski jacket, but I think just carrying my skis would probably rip the material. They also didn't add enough pockets to this jacket. So, if you don't need a lot of pockets and are really not hard on jackets, this one is perfect for you.
