If you're anything like us, you wear many different hats in your life, and this variable lifestyle translates to the saddle, too. You've got room on your cycling calendar for sportives, interval-laden training rides, all-out hammer fests, and everything in between. The Colnago CLD 105 Complete Bike is the ideal machine for all these cycling applications, and it represents the right blend of ride quality, reliable components, and value for the cyclist who loves to ride but doesn't necessarily live to race.
Colnago stresses that, though this is a women's bike, it's not just a pink-and-shrink job. Like the line-topping C60 and V1-R frames, the CLD's carbon fiber is 100% sourced from Toray's Japanese factory. Toray also has operations in China and elsewhere, but the carbon produced in Japan is the most consistent in the world — guaranteed perfect, every time, so you don't have to worry about random structural failures. That's why it's the only material Boeing will use in its aircraft and Colnago will use in its carbon frames.
While Colnago designed the CLD from the ground-up to be a woman's bike, it does share certain dimensions with the now-retired M10, which was the Italian manufacturer's flagship monocoque frameset before the advent of the all-new V1-R. CLD has a slightly taller head tube and shorter chainstays for a seat tube angle that better accommodates a woman's body. These changes are subtle but welcome; they increase comfort and expand fit options with a more flexible stack height while preserving a race-ready geometry that confidently holds lines through sweeping corners on fast descents.
As you'd expect from a Colnago, the CLD also places a premium a gentle ride without sacrificing responsiveness. The tapered head tube, built-up bottom bracket, and shaped chainstays ensure efficient power transfer while compliant, flattened seatstays net compliance. The oversized legs on the carbon fork also absorb road noise and complement the secure handling of the tapered steering tube and long wheelbase. For those keeping score at home, that's efficient, responsive power transfer, a plush ride, and graceful handling, the combination of which constitutes the ride quality that Colnago is known for.
The CLD 105 is kitted with Shimano's groupset of the same name. While the more expensive groups take pride of place among the coffee shop crowd, those of us who ride for the joy of motion rather than the accolades of tech spec sheets have learned to quietly appreciate 105's new 11-speed iteration. The indexing, trim, and cable pitch have been improved for the shift levers and front and rear derailleurs, respectively, for precision beyond what its price point suggests. The CLD is finished with ancillary components designed to accommodate narrower shoulders and women's sit-bone anatomies for a ride that addresses issues we often have with "normal" components that are really designed for men.
