Koven Plus Jacket - Men's

The Cloudveil Men’s Koven Plus Jacket is a versatile, reactive shell jacket for all things alpine. Reactive you say? That’s right—thanks to waterproof breathable Schoeller c-change panels that dynamically breathe depending on your core temperature, you’ll stay comfortable and protected in any situation. Cloudburst Stretch fabric moves with you on long alpine routes or lightweight ski tours, and body-mapped tricot lining adds warmth while saving bulk. Cloudveil also added an adjustable, helmet-compatible hood and powder skirt to keep out spindrift and snow. No wonder Outside Magazine awarded it Gear of the Year.

Bottom Line: A smarter kind of shell jacket.

I bought this jacket with the intention of using it for both 3 season outdoor and skiing. Overall good jacket, but not quite for me.I would describe it as a mid-weight hardshell jacket that has a softer feel. Awesome quality, feel and fabrics. Very windproof and waterproof jacket while still feeling like a 'jacket' (vs the cruncher pro shells). It's similar to the Arc'Teryx Stingray, but a bit lighter + less ski oriented. The Koven+ has some stretch built in with the schoeller, which is nice. This jacket can double as both a ski and mountaineering style jacket. Though after use I would say its better served as a cool/cold weather mountain jacket. And although it breathes well, the body mapping fleece panels + the weight of the jacket do not make it ideal for backpacking in anything but colder weather. I would rather use a lighter PacLite jacket or a thin eVent jacket in most situations.Skiing wise, the jacket is not long enough, nor has enough movement in it's cut (IMO) to be a great skiing jacket. I am 6'2", 200lbs, athletic build with long arms and legs, and the Large fit best. The arm length was good, waist bit big, but the chest and especially shoulder area was simply not roomy enough to layer much and still have that 'good freedom of movement feeling'. (The XL was way to big in the body to even consider). Also the powder skirt is pretty much worthless, as its pretty high up on an already shorter jacket...I guess my nipples wont get snow on them? How the hood connected directly with the body was annoying as well - zipping up the front all the way with the hood down caused it to have a chocking sensation. Much prefer jackets that have separate hood/collar combo.so overall great materials, but just not quite right what I was looking for + not right fit, so still have it 4 stars

I'm looking for a good rain jacket. I live in the South so I need something that would be good for the hot summer months. Would this jacket be alright for hotter weather (80+F)?

I second the nomination for the Rab Latok Alpine. This jacket is awesome (especially if you aren't using it with a helmet), but it does have small amounts of fleece insulation in strategic spots which makes it more of a winter-oriented shell. The Rab jacket is made of eVent, weighs less than this and breathes every bit as well. I'd give an eVent jacket the nod over this one for warm weather usage.

Poor Customer Service

By:
September 8, 2010

I have been trying to send my jacket back for warranty - It soaks up water like a sponge after 2 seasons. Poor construction, my backpack has worn holes around my waist and shoulders. They will not return my phone calls (3 calls, 3 messages, no response) or emails (2 with no response) to provide a return authorization number. Try a different company, one that supports their product.

No - but it is very unobtrusive. I've yet to snap mine closed while I am wearing it and I pretty much have forgotten that the powder skirt even exists.

Great reliable jacket- Good in winter

By:

I have an older Koven, from before they integrated the hood with the collar and added the Schoeller fabric. It's still VERY similar. Same Cloudburst fabric. IT's a great jacket. It's stretchy in fit, and keeps out wind and snow and rain. In heavy rain/ wet snow it can get a wetted out look but i don't ever remember it soaking through. In typical Cloudveil fit, the arms feel huge, the torso feels an inch too short, and the neck is too tight to cover your mouth if you need it to. Nonetheless, i love this jacket and it's a great storm shell. Have a balaclava on hand and sinch down the waist elastic. I've used this jacket in storm conditions where it was blowing snow (roughly 40mph) and the cloudburst fabric won't let anything through. Wind will beat against it but it keeps it all out. Very nice jacket. It stays at the top of my list of favs up with my OR Mentor shell. The Cloudburst won't let you down. May need to retreat the DWR eventually as I did. Use nikwax wash in or Grangers. I'm 5'10" 160lbs and wear a small.

How warm weather would you say you could use this jacket in?

How warm weather would you say you could use this jacket in? I just got it and it feels light enough breathable, but with the fleece could you get away with it backpacking in 50s?

I've used this jacket year round in Alaska. It's a little heavy to use for high cardio stuff but i've worn it as a rain jacket a couple summers/ fall seasons. It's very versatile and works very well. And don't forget the pit zips will help. It is a little heavy for hot weather or heavy cardio but i've used it all summer whenever needed with no issues. For reference it usually doesn't get above 70 when i've used it and it's usually colder here when it rains or when you're at the top of a mountain. You'll appreciate its warmth at 50. I'd say yes, it'll work for what you want it for. 50's will suit this jacket perfectly. I've layered everything from a mountain hardware synthetic fill jacket or even down to a t-shirt. it works for just about everything.

I'll second Blaine's answer - there is a light fleece lining on the back of this jacket which is great for snow sports but less ideal for warm-weather activities. That said and done the Schoeller c_change material is awesome and does a great job of letting heat out. I used this jacket in the low 60's on a windy day and was very comfortable on a strenuous hike. If you aren't going to be using this jacket for winter purposes, you should also look at jackets from either Westcomb or Rab
made using eVent fabric. The Latok Alpine from Rab could definitely be used in the winter and it doesn't have the fleece liming that is in parts of the koven plus. eVent is definitely more breathable than Gore-Tex, and I'd estate that it is roughly equivalent to c_change.

Almost Perfect

By:
February 28, 2010

I really like the concept of the c-change material on this jacket. Great pockets, really nice velcro on the cuffs. The body-mapped fleece on the inside of the jacket is a really nice feature for winter activities. This jacket could be used all seasons but, more ideal for cold weather. It also has a nice strectch to it in the rite places. What I did not like was the collar height is a little too short. For a Mountaineering storm shell I need more face coverage when its really blowing outside.Otherwise a very good and almost perfect Jacket.

Backcountry is wrong sometimes in their specs. This much just be one of the times someone wasn't paying enough attention. Mine definitely did not have a powder skirt either.

Good jacket but WTF with the zippers

By:
April 23, 2010

I am on my 3rd Koven jacket and will be my last. Everything is good except for the zippers (warranted it once due to total zipper failure)and velcro cuffs. Cloudveil zippers seem to get stuck or snags everything (same on my waders).

I bought my jacket at end of season and the garment is great and a super value. The coat is very light and comfortable. All I have experienced is wind and rain, with which the coat had no trouble. I would love to be heading to Chile to test it skiing.

I recommend the jacket because it is much more comfortable and just as competent as the Mountain Hardwear Goretex Pro Shell it replaced. I bought one for my older son, and my younger boy wishes he had agreed before his size was sold out.

Best I've owned!!!

By:
March 23, 2010

The best shell I've ever owned. I'm a split boarder so I often find myself booting across parts of long traverses and I've yet to get too balmy in this jacket. The fabric feels great, wears well, has stretch in all the right places, and breaths like an Olympic athlete. Everything works well and it seems to be pretty durable, although i did put a small rip in it from bumping into a protruding bolt, didn't rip as bad as it could have though. The only complaint I have is that the flap over the main front zipper doesn't always stay put and lets in a little breeze, I was only wearing a T-shirt underneath so probably wouldn't notice with a thicker layer on. All in all a great jacket, very glad I bought it. For sizing info: I'm 5'9", 155 lbs, and the Medium is a nice roomy fit-ready for a puffy or extra layer underneath.
