I choose gels based on flavor. Functionality seems to be pretty uniform from brand to brand, flavors definitely are not. I love the Clif vanilla, Razz - for no caffeine and the mocha when I need the extra boost. I find the citrus and strawberry to be awful, but other people love them.

I ended up giving these away because the texture was so awful the results were great you got plenty of energy but I couldn't stomach them.

I have been using clif shots for years. I have never had a problem. I like how they don't add a bunch of vitamins. If I am going to use several gels in one ride I don't want 500% vitamin e. I want quick easy to digest calories and that is what these provide.
Delicious energy

Not only do they taste good, but they make you feel good too :) Great for a long mtn bike ride or other.
Just as nice as GU recommend either or.

These are the same as Gu no arguing that. I am not going to say these are any better or worse, because in my opinion they work exactly the same no difference. Other than the packaging being the same they give you quick energy that is soft on the GI tract and reducing stomach upset as well as they take about 10 minutes for your body to begin feel the metabolic benefits. The litter leash on these I am not impressed with and most of the time on the go I end up ripping the whole top off. Nice idea but in the end I don't really care, I am more than capable of getting my trash in a baggy and I just throw them in my designated trash compartment and go. Other than that I love them and they do exactly what they should do. I buy these in unison with GU depending on which is a better deal and or what is not sold out and what is available.
Gets the job done - love the litter leash

Clif shots work as good as any gels. They taste good and quickly give an energy boost. Plus the litter leash is a great idea.
Thick

I tried my first Cliff Shot last week and It was definitely better than Hammer Gel, but not as good as Honey Stinger. I tried the Razz flavor and it was ok, but gel is a little too thick for my liking. It made me feel thirsty. I'm going to stick with Honey Stinger though. It is thinner and tastes like honey with the flavor that you are eating! Super good!

I used these for mountain biking and trail running. I really cant stand any of the flavors but the raspberry rocks! They provide extra energy for going hard all day.
caffeine!

When you don't wanna mess with making coffee but still get your caffeine, this is where it is at. Easy, no mess, just make sure you keep them warm or they get a little hard to push out.

I tried these for the first time midway through a half marathon. I don't know how much it helped with energy because I wasn't really tired at the time, but the taste (Razz) was awful. It was like pouring warm strawberry preserves into my mouth. I couldn't get past the taste and texture. The other flavors might be better because I wouldn't feel like I was eating jelly.

I love these. I eat one before and half way through any tour I go on. The digest easily, taste good, and provide a great boost in energy. Definitely a fan. The only problem I have with them is they are really messy to store after you eat one.
Thick, like a brick

Well not that thick, but still...
They have a coffee cup on the outside of the caffeinated ones indicating how much caffeine they have in them, good thing, cus this thing eats like a brick. A little too thick for my tastes, not bad if you hit ti before a workout, but Id hate to try and wolf one of these down while biking or running!
Still, gets your jacked and give you some serious go-juice!
I got the mocha, pretty good taste, bumps this from 3 to 4 stars!
Good for a boost

I got the mocha flavored ones on bonktown for $11.99 and I've enjoyed them so far on a couple of rides. Their consistency is rather thick, kind of like Jello custard, but a little more solidified. The taste of the mocha ones are great and they little caffeine boost with the calories is a nice little perk. The only downside is the consistency, I'd prefer it a little bit thinner to make it easier going down.

Why is it the Cliff Shots are the only...

Why is it the Cliff Shots are the only gels with the 'litter leash'? It's a great idea, and it seems like all the other gel companies should be using it. Perhaps there are legal reasons? If so, there ought to be a way around it; kind of like when they made beer cans with pop tops that stayed connected.

Copyright laws often inhibit widespread concept application. It'll get around though.

The litter leash is a good idea in theory, but it does not work for me most of the time. When I pull the tab I usually accidentally (even when trying not to) pull the entire top off of the gel pack. Fortunately I can just throw the top in my little trash zip lock and don't ever even think about how I am ever going to throw both my top and bottom gel pack away. I think it is really more of a gimmick, because I am really not stressing geting both in the trash, it is really not that hard people, and I am not that lazy.
Mmmmm ... Mocha!

I tried the Chocolate flavor a while back, and didn't like it, but Mocha is my new favorite! I get myself up out of bed thinking about this flavor ... the perfect way to get a few calories in before my morning workout. I like GU better, in general, but this flavor of Clif Shot rocks!!
Pretty Good Energy Shot

Usually when I get a gel, I know I'm not going to get the best tasting thing in the world, but I also want it to work and this gel does a pretty good job. The chocolate flavor is pretty decent and I like the 100 calorie amount for a quick energy rebuild or something to get me through a workout when I haven't eaten in a while. Litter leash is pretty clutch as well. I'll update about trying a Turbo flavor.
Update. I tried the Cherry Chocolate Turbo flavor. The taste of this combination wasn't bad, but the caffeine amount did the trick in quick fix situations. If you need a cup of coffee feeling, bring three for the day.
More for caffeine fans?

For me personally, they do nothing. I'm not really affected by caffeine and I have a very high metabolism so I'm always needing substance in addition to energy. The people I know that like these "shots" use them for exactly that, a shot of energy during a meeting rather than resorting to a cup of coffee. I will say I think the mocha tastes pretty good, that's the only kind I've tried. The goo is sort of thick (slightly less viscous than Elmers Glue), but I didn't expect anything different.
Sweet spot!!

The chocolate cherry flavor rocks!! Used it on a couple of long runs the last few days and it hit the sweet spot instantly. Litter leash is a winner too making this a very practical addition to your running gear. Consistency (viscosity) of the gel was fine in the mornings too.
