The Chaco Z/1 Terreno Sandal created a faithful following of outdoor enthusiasts and travelers because of its awesome design and practical versatility. The thick, 8mm Terreno outsole has deep lugs for traction on loose surfaces, and offers an extra degree of comfort and cushioning. Subsequently, they've become popular for light hiking and long days of pounding pavement. The aggressively contoured footbed of the Z/1 cradles your heel for rear foot control, while supporting your arch to prevent over-pronation. The Z/1 strap configuration features an open toe design for those who like unrestrained toes. Great-looking, and extremely comfortable, the Z/1 Terrenos may never leave your feet.
Bottom Line: Chaco Z/1 Terreno Sandals blend comfort with performance and are an essential addition to your summer footwear collection.
I've owned these Z/1 Terreno Sandals for a little over a year and they are by far the best sandal I've ever owned. Chaco's time tested single strap adjustment is one of those designs they should never be changed. The sandal runs just about ½ size large, but I think it's good to have just a little more room on a sandal then not enough. This sandals sole is perfect for hiking over rocks and the occasional river crossing as well as everyday use.
Wow what a sandal. Straps are placed such that they snug across the instep and they DON'T PINCH THE TOES. I recommend them to those who want a secure fitting sandal that leaves all five toes free to wiggle.
This was my first pair of Chaco sandals and I was a little leery of paying over $70 for sandals. After wearing them for several weeks, I know I got my money's worth. They are so comfortable. They are my every day shoes now!

These come in wide sizes. Other sandals don't. Plus, the footbed is far more supportive than any other sandal (Teva, Columbia, Nike, Reebok, Dunham, etc.), which makes fit more crucial but almost infinitely adjustable. My left and right feet are shaped quite different from one another, and the sandals can be adjusted accordingly. They are made in Colorado, USA which is something that matters to me, and can be re-soled. Not your typical disposable sandal. Year end close-outs are a MAJOR bargain.
My Terreno's fit okay, and have a good sturdy sole and really hold your foot tight, but comfortably. I have one gripe: you tighten them on your feet by means of a strap. In this way, they are more effort to get on and off than my old Land's End sandals that had bucket.
I was pleasantly surprised to be able to forget the WICKED ENORMOUS price. These are actually worth it. Very comfortable, sweet looking, awesome tan lines you get from them. The grip is very powerful. They get a lot less slimy than my tevas because they lack the 'anti-microbial' footbed thingee. Overall, they're way comfortable and Colin Fletcher was right-I "wear them 90% of the time there isn't snow on the ground."
I'm so very happy with the sandals I purchased for my husband. He had been looking for some time for sandals to properly support his arches. The best he was able to find were custom made and very expensive. He is very happy with the Z/1 Terreno's I bought for him for Father's Day. He finally can wear sandals and be comfortable!
After trying a pair of imitation tevas on the trail, I realized I liked the feeling of hiking in sandals but wanted a sturdier pair for walking on well groomed trails and all the above. I bought the z/1's just before a backpacking trip to Yosemite and broke in the footbed and straps for a week. For four days on the trail in Yosemite, from dirt trails to mud trails, boulder fields to ascending peaks, I wore my sandals full time except one afternoon when the freezing rain forced me to wear my boots. The terreno sole has excellent traction on rock, trusting it while descending steep rock faces with a heavy pack. The straps were comfortable, keeping my feet in place. Never rolled my ankle. These sandals will last me a long time.
I've had my chaco's for about 2 months after my Teva terri-fi's plastic ankle buckle busted on their first trip. No chance of that happening to the chacos- possibly the sturdiest sandal on the market. The sole is plenty grippy, but maybe slightly less so than Teva. The only issue is the break in. I've never had blisters from sandals like these ones, and it's not just the straps. They are getting better with age, but up not up for using them on longer walks yet. Otherwise comfort levels are great! (would be a 5 if the break in was less).
The straps are kind of complicated and hard to get used to. Kind of difficult to put on and may rub your feet raw in a couple areas where the straps are loose.
An airline lost one of my beloved Timberland sports sandals forcing me to shop for a replacement. Some friends had recommended Chacos, so I apprehensively decided to give them a try. I fell in love with them instantly. The soles are thicker and more rugged than I thought they would be and the arch support is great. The best part though is the strap system. It is one continuous strap with a great buckle allowing one pull to tighten to a perfect fit every time. Likewise, one pull allows you to loosen and kick them off easily. These things feel like they're a part of your foot and have great traction. I'm hooked.
I thoroughly enjoy the open feeling and wear them whenever I am not at work. The styling is also a plus as I don't need to worry about any VELCRO® wearing out and not closing. They give great support but do need some getting use to as the footbed is textured and my big toes were being rubbed. This just took a little time to adjust to.
These are great sandals and very comfortable. The strapping system takes a little getting used to, but wearing them for half-an-hour or so accomplishes that. Great arch support.
