The straps are very snug out of the box.I returned mine because they were so tight.

I'm giving this sandal a "Not Recommended" review because of the fit. I typically wear 11-1/2 or 12 in just about all types of shoes, but these sandals were way too tight. The footbed was slightly too short, as well. I didn't want to risk ordering a 13 without the ability to try it on first, so I just returned the 12's.
Maybe someone else could speak to the fit of the 13's?
