Super light, super packable.
There are only so many pockets in your jersey and for long rides you need all the room you can find. Between tubes, C02, snacks, ID, and spare cash, what do you do if the weather warms up and you need to shed layers? Castelli's Leggero Vest removes some of the guesswork with its super lightweight construction.
Using water-resistant, breathable Forcefield fabric, the vest weighs in at a mere 50grams. That's about half the weight of a spare tube. It comes with its own stuff sack and folds down to a small four-inch package that easily slips into the spare space in a back pocket. And even though it's very lightweight, it is packed with details. For example, the two-way zipper allows you to customize ventilation and also makes accessing back pocket jerseys less taxing. Behind the sipper is a draft flap to cool wind from slipping through. The collar is lined with mesh to minimize chafing on your chin and the back is constructed of mesh panels which help to move moisture away from you skin so that your core temperature doesn't cool down. This vest features a form-fit cut. This means that it won't flap in the wind while you ride.
The Castelli Leggero Vest is available in a Black, translucent White and Yellow Fluo. The Castelli Leggero Vest comes in sizes from Small to 3XL.

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
For those cool morning rides (55-65F) It is a great fit and has minimal flapping in the wind. It fits easily in jersey pockets when it warms up. Be forewarned though, very basic not much to it, but very functional.
This thing is tiny!
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I did not pay sufficient attention to the size chart, disbelieving that a XXL could measure a chest size of just 43. But trust me, it runs small.
I usually take an XL, so I thought a XXL would be fine. Boy was I wrong!
The XXL in the Leggero fit like a L in just about anything else.
Poor quality zipper
I own a lot of Castelli gear. Castelli offers arguably the greatest lineup of performance cycling clothing in the world.
But the -cheap- poor quality zipper on this otherwise good looking and well-designed featherweight-packable vest is not up to the job. The soft nylon teeth derail and then jam incessantly! This zipper is beyond fiddly! Frustrating! Now the teeth are bent/deformed and the zipper works even worse.
In addition, the vest I received suffered from poor (missing) stitching at the bottom and the wrist hems. This is unacceptable from Castelli -at any price. Come'n Castelli!
UPDATE: The new Castelli "Velo" vest (and jacket) is the replacement for the Leggero vest (and jacket) and has addressed these issues. Buy the Velo vest instead.
exactly what I was looking for
Instead of my usual medium in cycling clothing, I am a large in Castelli. I?m 5?9?, 140 lbs. with skinny arms and a 36?-37? chest and the large fits good. The medium looked and felt tiny. Be warned that this vest is also designed to be quite short in the front regardless of the size. So even my size large which looks perfect in the length on the back and through the chest is short in the front. That?s just how this vest is supposed to be. This short length in the front is for when you?re in the aero position so don?t worry about how it looks when you?re standing up. Also, you sacrifice pockets for a mesh back but it?s well worth it. I have a cycling jacket that doesn?t have a mesh back and you get way too hot very fast. You gotta have the mesh back for venting. The Leggero vest is made of an ultra-light material that folds up teeny-tiny. It comes with a palm-sized carry pouch that amazingly holds the vest. However, I don?t use it. I just fold the vest up and put it in a jersey pocket but it?s nice that they included the bag. I got this vest for days that start cool where you?re maybe also wearing arm and knee warmers but will probably take all or some of that off at some point. This vest is perfect for that situation and with it I don?t need to wear a base layer. It?s excellent for the weather we have here in SW Florida. The vest provides decent warmth and wind protection but not too much and it?s easy to stow. My only complaint is that I could do without the two way zipper. I never use it and it causes me occasional annoyance. If we could give half star ratings I?d give the Leggero vest 4 stars but since that?s not an option I?m going with the 5 stars. To summarize, pros: mesh back, very lightweight, designed for cool (not cold) days, easy to stow, highly visible (bright yellow color). Cons: odd sizing, about an inch or two short in front, two way zipper (although some people might like the zipper). Overall I recommend it especially if you can buy it on sale.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
Nice vest. Very light, compact and indeed wind proof. Sizing is always a gamble. I am about 195 pounds/5.11 height. I tried all sizes from XXL to L, but ended up keeping XL. However, I am XXL in Castelli bibs. My only complain is that the vest does not have back pockets, so you ended up stuffing your under jersey pockets which is not super comfortable but manageable. Use it in the early fall with a pair of arm warmers when using long sleeve jersey is an overkill. Great flexibility.
Great fit, super light
Best vest I've owned so far. I'm 5'9" with a 39" chest and the L is a perfect fit: very snug but not constrictive. I hate it when vests flap in the wind so I wanted the "race" fit. Once it's on over my jersey I hardly even know it's there. It's even fairly snug (but not tight) around the neck, so there's far less wind that sneaks in through up top. And as others have mentioned, it rolls up incredibly small.
One other note on the fit: the arm holes are elastic and somewhat tight. Which I like; again, one less spot for the wind to sneak in. I've noticed that if you're standing it'll feel like the bottom of the arm holes are riding up into your armpits, and I was definitely nervous when I tried this vest on the first time thinking this was really going to bother me. However, once in the saddle in the crouch position I've experience no discomfort whatsoever.
Purchased the chartreuse vest, not so much for the wind protection, but for visibility when riding on rural roads here in the desert. I've noticed that traffic now gives me plenty of room when they pass. Only drawback is that the cool graphics on my new jerseys are hidden by the vest. Oh well, I'd rather be safe to ride another day.
The vest will ride up a wee bit in the rear if you have your jersey pockets stuffed with the normal things, like a spare tube, identification, house keys, camera, nutrition, etc. Doesn't ride up too much.
Great vest - Highly recommend
I got the yellow in XL. The sizing is definitely true to Castell - you will want to size up. I am 5'10, 180lbs and the XL is perfect. This is a lightweight vest, but perfect in a light chill. It blocks the wind very well. The yellow is very bright and will no doubt make you more visible on the road. Be safe out there!
Nice and light but be careful on the sizing
Nice looking vest, and super light. However, what is with Castelli's sizing these days ( both in bibs and tops)? I have never worn anything but Large with Castelli over the years and a large in this is more like a regular castelli medium. Definitely size up- I should have but decided to wear it, It doesn't really give much due to the fabric.
One cool feature is that is packs down to an included zippered bag for easy packing in your jersey pocket.
It does fit a bit short as others have said, particularly in the front, so it is not a vest that you can really use for running or other sports which is kind of a bummer.
Light and Easy
Nice vest. Really light yet is great on those chilly mornings for blocking wind then shedding off when the weather warms. Very easily packaged into a small puck size which takes up little room in your jersey pocket. I would have given it 5 stars but the color black I ordered isn't quite a true black. More of a dark dark brownish black. Anyone else experience this with the "black" option?
What you expect for the price
Nice, super light weight as I was after. rolls up to fist size and great for jersey pocket when not needed
Sizing per the chart is accurate
Height = 184cm
Chest = 102cm
Waist = 83cm
Weight = 81kg
After looking at the reviews I decided to size up from L (per sizing chart) to XL.
XL is a comfortable fit with room to move and fine for social riding. An L would have been a perfect aero fit which would have been preferable, but based on the price, postage back and forward to Australia would not have made it viable to return.
It is very light weight so requires care when using.
White colour is semi transparent and jersery is visable.
A real dissapointment.
I'd been eying this vest for a while and eventually purchased it. Though I like the look of it I have to say that the quality of this item is subpar. My zipper bust after two rides and the seams are poor.
short in front and trim fit. if your not italian...size up (5'11", 178 lbs: XL fits me perfect). well specked and well built. stuffs to the size of 3 wadded up kleenex. sure beats shoving newspaper in your jersey front for the descent. Great value.
Ditto with everyone else here, also the pricepoint is great for what you get.
Two way zipper?
From the image it appears...
Two way zipper?
From the image it appears to have a two way zipper. It that correct?
Highly recommend this vest
I love this vest. It is feather-light, yet blocks chilly breezes as well as my much heavier vest, while keeping my back vented and comfortable. Initially I bought the wrong size--a large (I'm 5'10"). Luckily RealCyclist had an xxl in stock & bent over backwards to facilitate the exchange. As Krikken says, it's easily rolled and stored when you take it off.
Great product, great store.
Too short for a tall guy
I'm 6'4", 195 lbs and I had to return the XL because it was too short.
Light and neat
Very light and neat, easily rolled together and put back in your rear-pocket. It hardly takes space at all, and when wearing it it gives excellent protection against the wind.
