    Awesome.

No, it won't make you invisible or pedal your bike for you, but Castelli's Fawesome 2 Vest has wholeheartedly earned its name for other reasons. On the days your ride takes you from a cool valley to a summit in the throes of a harrowing windstorm, the vest's use of the same technology as the famed Gabba jersey means you'll be protected from the wind without feeling like you're trapped in a damp greenhouse.

The Fawesome's construction is pretty simple: highly-efficient Windstopper X-Lite Plus fabric on the front and shoulders contrasted with stretchy Nano Flex Light on the back, resulting in a vest that conforms to your body movements in the saddle while repelling water, resisting wind, and continuously wicking moisture away from your body. Stuff the Fawesome 2 into your jersey pocket before a ride if the weather looks unsettled and you'll be able to quickly zip it on when you need to without weighing yourself down, and when you reach the valley again, a quick stop finds it back in your jersey pocket without any skillful folding techniques required.

    Special

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

I think a few folks don't understand the purpose this vest. It's not a casual, recreational cycling vest. Part of Castelli's Rosso Corsa (race) collection, this vest is designed for hard riding and training; and the sweat production that is created during that kind of riding.

It isn't supposed to have rear pockets. The textile in the rear is expressly designed to vent sweat during hard riding. Your jersey has rear pockets.

Pros: 1.) The entire front of the vest is totally windproof (Gore's sublime Windstopper). While the entire back is made of a light and highly permeable textile (nanoflex) for sweat ventilation there.

This is simply brilliant design. And just the sort you expect from Castelli; a leading kit supplier to and collaborator with the pro peloton (e.g., team Cannondale, Cervelo and soon, Team Sky).

2.) All the textiles used here are soft and form fitting and aero tight. This vest will not flap in the wind like cheap nylon vests.

So, along with general cold weather hard riding... here is an example of what this vest excels at:

Putting on when summitting before the start of a long descent in cool or cold weather. Just like the pros do (for a reason). The Windstopper front panel prevents your copious sweat (created during the climb) from chilling you to the bone during a long cold descent. And the wrap-around aero fit won't slow you down. It's brilliant.

Fit: Size up +1 from your street size; per usual with Castelli. Buy the same size as you usually do in Castelli tops. It will fit snug.

    Awesome Fawesome

I have always been a vest person, looking for the perfect cool weather vest for either racing, training or just riding. Wind vests are fine, given that they are not insulated and simply provide minor wind block at, say, above 60 degrees. Enter the Fawesome. Windstopper + Nanoflex and a close fit deliver what I was searching for- a racer inspired piece that offers protection at lower temps, provides good moisture repellent, and fits close. The lack of pockets is welcomed, as there are usually 3 pockets on a jersey and the vest smooths out the rear profile. Length is expected with no bunching or shortage, while the chest fits close and the high collar helps in keeping the warmth inside. The flexible nature of the material used allows for plenty of natural movement while on the go. The only issue I can find in my fit is a bit of excessive material on the shoulders that causes some minor "flapping" in the wind. Overall the Fawesome delivers. Sizing is on the small side, as I ordered up one size to Large. Most of my other Castelli products are medium on a 6' 1", 170 frame.

    Nice but room for improvement....

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I like this vest but two things bug me about it. First, it is surprisingly short. A couple inches longer in the back would make a big difference. Second, given that it has no rear pockets, it would have been nice to have a small zipper pocket on the front of the vest.

    Versatile vest with fantastic quality!

This vest is easily my favorite cycling clothing item. It’s super light, protects well from the wind, and most importantly: breathes well. It takes out all the temperature extremes and it has a great feel to it. It’s very elastic, so the fit is tight but comfortable, perfect for race day. It does not have rear pockets by design and that's perfectly fine as it is meant to be worn on top of your jersey, which has pockets already. Because it's so compact, it packs easily in one of the jersey's pockets but believe me, once you put it on, you won't want to take it off.

    Great Vest

Was replacing my old PI thermal fleece vest and this was the best I could find, that was currently available. PI no longer made a vest that was anything but a wind shell.

The only downside of the vest is that there is no pocket on the back.

Sizing runs really small, normal I'm a Medium / Large, but I wear an XL in this vest, so buy at least one size larger than you think you need.

    I love this vest

This vest is now my go-to clothing item when it's a bit chilly, say in the 50's. It keeps me warm without overheating like a full sleeze jacket might. It runs small. I normally wear a large and in this I'm an XL.

    Cut far too short

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I love most Castelli kit, and I wanted to love this — but alas, it was not to be. While this vest ticks off the "warm" and "weatherproof" boxes with aplomb, it is cut far too short to be practical as a gilet. Even when worn with a presumably-matching GABBA 2 jersey in medium, it fails to cover past the bottom hem of the jersey and frequently bunches up. As it is cut too short to be worn over a jersey and has no pockets for use /as/ a jersey, it is essentially useless. If I hadn't purchased this on sale in Winter to be worn in Spring, I would have returned it for sure.

    Helps Keep Your Core Warm

It's thicker than your typical windbreaker vest so I use this in the winter on days below 45 degrees.

I end up wearing it under my Gabba Jersey simply because it drives me crazy that the vest doesn't have rear pockets. With winter gloves on, it's a wrestling match to get anything out of my jersey pockets if I wear it on the outside. If it had rear pockets, I'd give it 5 stars.

I also wish the back of the vest was the same Yellow Flou as the rest of it. It doesn't make sense to me from a visibility standpoint that it has black on the back - especially on winter rides when fog, rain, and darker conditions are likely.

Like most Castelli gear, it runs small. The size small fits like a glove on me.

One of the best pieces in my kit!

This vest looks great, fits very well, the material is fantastic and everyone has complimented it. The high collar protects my neck from wind coming downhill. I'm a Castelli fan.

    Great Vest

Got this vest because I wanted it to be form fitting. I was concerned about the packability but it fits perfectly in my back pockets. My recommendation is to stay with the same size you wear for Castelli's clothes. Be aware that this best is not forgiving if you have a protruding abdomen. I have several different brand vests ( PI Pro, Sugoi, Castelli's, LG, etc) but by far this is the best so far. As a side note, I live in So Cal and was worried about the vest being too hot for the 1-2 hr chilly mornings, but this vest was perfect.

    FYI The sizes are European.

    Runs small for sure!

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I don't any other Castelli to compare, but I normally wear medium. Occasionally small. I have to return this medium I bought to get a large. Size up when you buy!!

    Nailed it.

Love it to death. I spent way too long finding a nice vest for iffy rides and should have just looked at what the pros are wearing: Gabba. The vest is great. The fit is a much needed improvement over the original Gabba vest (fluttery shoulders anybody??) and the fabric is just as great. It rolls up to about 2/3 of a jersey pocket making it perfect for those rides where the sun is going up or down or the weather might roll in something unpredictable. The zip is excellent, seems sturdy and is super easy to secure and operate (when you're no handing and whipping this bad boy out your pocket and on with fifteen testosterone raging 40+ riders snuggling up against your 25 year old shoulders you'll appreciate a zipper that isn't fussy). Ride this from 30-50F and you're good to go. The shoulders still flutter just a tiny bit, nothing like the original Gabba though and it's barely noticeable. Maybe this is a YMMV situation since I have a bit of a skeletor-complex about my upper body but Castelli definitely redesigned the fit from the original Gabba whose shoulders fit terribly. I'm 6'1ish, 145 pounds, 35" chest and normally wear a L in Castelli outerwear. Medium was too tight, L was perfect. The reflective bits are an excellent touch on this as well. Lights out and you'll always know where your vest is, it basically glows in the dark. Perfect for sundowners.

    Versatile bit of kit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The snug and stretchy material offers a bit of insulation and plenty of shelter from the wind. The back panel breathes. It's still possible to get clammy in this vest because of the placement of wind resistant material under the arm pits. I never got sweaty though; if it gets too tropical, a slight tug on the beefy and smooth as cream cheese zipper will give you all the ventilation you could want. Plus, since it has no pockets or other extraneous features, it folds down and fits easily in a jersey pocket. They advertise it as water resistant, but I held it under the tap and it held water like a bowl. So I'd class it as waterproof unless the nano coating wears off. This thing is really versatile, since you can pair it with a summer or winter weight jersey and a variety of base layers to cover a wide temperature range.
