It's like a shirt made out of air.

This is the sleeveless version of Castelli's Core Mesh Base Layer. And as with the short sleeve version, it incorporates an update to the classic fishnet style design. The older design used the holes of what felt like real fishnet in order to trap air between the skin and the second layer of clothing.

However, with the new fully-open mesh design, it still serves to hold the jersey off of the skin. Essentially, this creates a layer of air between your skin and the jersey in order to help you maintain a constant body temperature. But, besides these thermo-regulating properties, the improvements that Castelli brings to the table are several. The mesh is made from a polyester hollow core fiber that's soft-to-the-touch, efficiently wicks away moisture, and has ample stretch. In terms of shape, Castelli calls this 'body wrap,' because it's designed to wrap the body so that the gaps are only in the mesh, not between the mesh and the body. Accordingly, the entire base layer is mesh, save the hems and the 'V' that resides just below the collar.

The Core Mesh is cut long in order to stay comfortably tucked inside your shorts and bibs. Additionally, it was constructed with minimal seams for a maximum level of comfort.

The Castelli Core Mesh Sleeveless Base Layer is available in the color White and in the sizes Small/Medium, Large/X-Large, and XX-Large.

Base Layer for All Types of Weather

I wear this base layer on nearly every ride. It is the only thing I need to wear under my gabba 2 even down into the 30s. So far it has worked great up into the mid 80s. Looking forward to testing it out this summer.

      Not bad

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: small

Pretty standard baselayer. The neck is alittle snug as previous reviewers have mentioned but its not horrible and pretty light so once you get it on you dont notice it at all. The material is pretty much a very thin net-like weave. Personally think Craft makes a better baselayer but this one was on sale so I figured I'd give it a try. It does what its suppose to which is wicking moisture but the netting might be odd for some people

      Keeps you cool!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This fish-net like baselayer and any Summer jersey make a GREAT combination for riding in hot weather. You will run much cooler!

This garment is designed to keep you cool in warm/hot weather by holding your jersey off your skin. It does this really really well.

NOTE: If your upper body is especially built, this specific garment may not be for you because the opening for the head is very small. But for me (my shoulders/neck aren't that big), it just snug, not a huge problem.

Cons: This garment works great, but 2 oz. of nylon fish-net should not cost $50! Definitely buy this item on sale.

Sizing: I'm 5'10" and 180. The L/XL fit perfect. This is supposed to wrap around your upper body snug under a jersey (obviously).

      Works surprisingly well

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It works surprising well in warm conditions. I found in mid 80's f to 90 degrees it worked very well and you noticed the cooling effect. I did one 95 degree high humidity and I didn't feel the difference. I guess if you are riding in those conditions nothing works. The neck line is high and at first I didn't like it but have gotten use to it. The head hole is on the smaller size but it hasn't stretched out yet. I will add to all my warm weather rides. I also purchased Castelli's Prosecco Ice Sleeveless Base and wore it once. So far the mesh wins hands down. I will use that one a few more times before I write that review.

      Solid Base Layer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using one of these base layers on almost every ride. It's the first base layer I've purchased, and I'm hooked now. Does a good job with keeping my body temp constant and sweat dries quickly, especially with the jersey unzipped if I need to dump some heat on a climb. I was worried about the fit with all the negative reviews, but the price is right and Castelli quality is always on point. The neck is small, but it's only a problem putting it on and squeezing my head through. It sits high on my neck, but is soft enough that I don't feel the tightness or anything. I'm 5'7'' 145lbs and the S/M fit is good for me. I've looked at other base layers, but for the price and construction this one is hard to beat. I have 3 on rotation right now. If you're super built, maybe look at something else.

      Horrible fit

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I should have paid closer attention to the negative reviews. Not only is this the worst cycling garment I?ve ever owned, it is the probably the worst cycling product I?ve ever owned. The fit is cartoonishly bad. It?s like Castelli confuses neck holes for arm holes; however, both are tight on this product. The neck hole is so incredibly tight I literally felt like I was being choked. Additionally, the fishnet fabric really irritated my nipples. I wore this garment one time, on a 50-mile ride. My nipples were so sensitive afterwards I had to wear band aids for several days afterwards. I?m 5?6 and a slightly muscular/lean build at 145 pounds. I wear 16 dress shirts. The S/M was incredibly tight in the neck. The fit was such a distraction I was unable to evaluate the efficacy of the alleged cooling effect. 1 star is one star too many. Deserves a negative rating.

The Neck Line Will Choke You

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I'm 5'9", 150lb and pretty lean and very fit. The S/M body fit was good, but the neckline nearly choked me. It's just way too narrow. The arm openings were also surprisingly tight, and I'm not exactly musclebound. Me thinks the sizing chart is off.

      neck too small,

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

no matter what body size, xl, 2-3 xl, SS or sleveless.

I'm 165, 5'9, 31 waist, 44 chest (push ups).. No one seems to know if there's a reason for the neck to be so tight. I have average 17", so they all went back. Looking at http://www.backcountry.com/castelli-airco-base-layer-short-sleeve-mens?ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6bWVucyBiYXNlIGxheWVyIHRvcHM6MTo0Om1lbnMgYmFzZSBsYXllciB0b3Bz

maybe will do the job. The open net did add some warmth as an extra layer next to skin though.

      Helps me beat the heat

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This base layer is must have for riding in warmer temps. Anything 80 degrees and above and this thing is on under my jersey. Essentially it's like having air conditioning during the ride because it creates room for air to flow between your jersey and your skin. The faster you ride, the cooler you feel. I own this model and the seamless version and prefer the seamless, but they both work great.

I wash this base layer by hand in the sink and air dry - do not put in the dryer. Also size down for a close to skin feel. You don't want this to fit lose on you. And be prepared for your wife to laugh at you and make fun of you if she sees you walking around the house with this on.

Quality Castelli construction too. I end up washing my right after my ride so I can have it ready again to ride the next day.
