Core Kit.

The Castelli Core Mesh Short Sleeve Base Layer is an update of the 1980's fishnet style design. The older design used the holes to trap air between the skin and the second layer of clothing. By trapping air, it creates a boundary layer where air can remain warm and perspiration can move as vapor off the skin to the second, usually exterior, layer. The improvements Castelli brings are several. The mesh is made from a polyester hollow core fiber that is soft to the touch, wicks well and has great stretch. The shape is called bodywrap because it's designed to wrap or hug the body so the gaps are only in the mesh, not between the mesh and the body. The entire garment is mesh, save the hems and the "V" just below the collar.

The Castelli Core Mesh Short Sleeve base layer comes in White. There are three sizes -- Small/Medium, Large/X-Large, and XX-Large. Go for the smallest possible size you think will fit. It will stretch.

My Best Baselayer!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Back in the 70's I had some fishnet underwear. A little crude, and made of 100% cotton, but functioned well. This update of that old premise really works well... Summer or Winter. Improved ventilation in the summer, and in the winter with everything zipped up, it adds a layer of air next to the skin (lest we forget air is the best insulator), and no clammy feeling from sweat drenched base layers. Stretches, so don't be afraid to buy one size smaller. Well worth the $35 sale price. Highly recommended!

Mesh under shirt - always

I spend several hours/day on the bike the training in needed to be competitive. Aside from a clean kit every day I reach for my mesh under layer shirt. A good mesh shirt is indispensible as it raising your cycling shirt up off the skin creating a air pocket that allows evaporation to occur. This in turn keeps you cool when it hot, and warmer when its a bit cool out. This Castelli mesh is my go pieces during the summer months and is built to last with double seams and strong thread construction.
I have been wearing an undershirt for years and cannot imagine not have this essential layer on under my kit to keep the air flowing over my skin.
Get yourself a couple and you will wonder how you lived with out them.

Best Base Layer

This mesh base layer fits very close, so when it is too warm and you unzip your jersey you cool right off. When it's too cool, just zip up and you will warm right up. Perfect for Fall, Winter, and Spring riding here in Southern California.

Great Warm Weather Base Layer

This base layer is perhaps the best warm weather base layer I have ever used. It is made of a very fine polyester that is so light and soft you would swear it is cotton. But the similarities to cotton stop there as this garment performs far better. This base layer does what it is designed to do, keep you cool and dry, without you ever even realizing it is there. Once you put it on, you totally forget about it as it simply disappears. It is cut true to size and fits snug against the body so it wicks sweat away quickly and efficiently. It dries extremely quickly too.

I live in south Florida where it is exteremely hot and humid even in the early mornings. This base layer keeps me cool and comfortble for my entire 40 mile morning ride. In the hot weather I use it by itself for my training rides and in cooler weather I use it under my jersey. This is a truely outstanding garment that should be in every cyclist's closet. I own 4 and plan to buy more.
