How to Buy Carabiners and Quickdraws

Carabiners and quickdraws keep a climber and his gear safely tethered together. Carabiners consist of an oval or D-shaped ring with a spring-loaded gate that snaps shut. Quickdraws connect two carabiners together with a webbing sling. Carabiners and quickdraws are strength-rated to ensure safe performance when properly used, and are available in a variety of shapes and styles.

Locking
Locking carabiners use either a manual or automatic locking system to prevent the gate from opening unintentionally. A locking carabiner is required for use with a belay device. Shop Locking Carabiners

Non-locking
Non-locking carabiners can freely snap open and shut, and are available with straight gates, bent gates, or wire gates. Straight gate carabiners are clipped to protection, while bent gates are easier to clip a rope into. Wire gates reduce weight and allow for larger gate openings. Shop Non-Locking Carabiners

Quickdraws and Dogbones
Quickdraws connect two carabiners together with a webbing sling called a dogbone. The upper carabiner (often a straight gate) is clipped to a bolt or piece of protection, while the lower carabiner (often a bent gate) is clipped to the rope. Shop Quickdraws & Dogbones
