My answer is for the adult jackets as I have not tried the youth ones. But hopefully it will be of help to someone. I am 6' and 169 pounds and was trying on both the Chilliwack and Yorkville bombers recently. The medium in either jacket was a perfect fit and the large was ok but a bit bulky on my. With these jackets you probably are not going to layer unless you get REALLY cold easily. You have to remember Canada Goose has three categories of fit and these are the Regular fit in their line. So they will usually follow your normal jacket sizing .
The better online retailers (such as this site) are good about exchanging for size if you make a mistake but pay attention to which of the three fits you are looking at. In their Slim Insulated I would likely take a large. In Relaxed Insulated I can fit in a small.

Or you can check the Canada Goose site and see if they are an authorized dealer.

Crazy-tiny elastic waistband; won't fit normal-sized kid.

I bought this parka XS/blue for my 5 year old son. Great quality construction, the fur collar was great and the coat seemed super-warm. Overall seemed worth the big price, especially if you can hand-down to a little brother.
The problem was the elasticized waistband at the base of the coat. It was RIDICULOUSLY small.
My son is slightly small/skinny for a 5 year old...he weighs 39 pounds and is 44" (His XS TNF Denali fleece is roomy on him.). When I tried the Chilliwack on him, I literally could NOT squeeze the parka around his waist in order to zip it. The elasticized band was so small/constricting that we could not zip the parka.
Again...I loved the quality/workmanship and overall styling, but the teensy-tiny elastic waistband made this one a no-go.
We went with a North Face McMurdo...fits great, super warm, lots less $$$.
