CamelBak UnBottle Reservoir - 2006 BCS

I bought the 3 liter (100oz) version to supplement my old 2 liter CamelBak Classic. It has never leaked on me which is great but I have since decided that bushwalkers do not need such a large capacity hydration bladder. A full bladder weighs 3kg and thus places a significant amount of weight in usually less than ideal places, e.g. strapped to the back of your pack or stored at the top of your pack under the lid. The better option for bushwalkers would be to purchase a smaller capacity reservoir for on-the-go hydration and carry any extra water in MSR Dromlite bags. Don't get carried away by buying this product just because of the brand name. You might impress your friends but you won't impress your wallet or your spine which will suffer from the weight.

Far more elaborate than the typical reservoir, and very easy to hold open while filling.
A few drawbacks though:
-- Have to be careful to tighten all the way when closing, otherwise can leak.
-- Can be tricky to open up sometimes. (Try breathing into the tube, which can change the air pressure up against the cap.)
-- On the heavy side for a reservoir.
-- The design encourages lashing to the outside of a pack, but that places the weight where it is less efficient to carry.

What I like the most about this CamelBak is the insulation and the options to attach it into just about any hydration capable backpack. Dan

During the Eco Primal Quest Expedition Adventure Race, the UnBottle went with me in my Greqory pack while biking and trekking and on my PFD while kayaking and swimming. It helped protect fluids from the heat, and had convenient attach points for strapping. I retrofitted mine with a tube director for hands-free usage -- a perfect combination!
