Take the CamelBak Octane 18X Hydration Pack with you when you head into the wilderness for some peace and quiet. Equipped with the three-liter Antidote reservoir with Quick Link System, that is ideal for full day hikes, the Octane 18X gets you to your destination and back again. An expandable cargo space and multiple pockets carry your extra layers, lightweight rain jacket, maps, trekking poles, and energy bars. CamelBak wanted to make sure you’ll be comfortable during your trek, so they gave the Octane a low-profile fit for stability and put Air Channel technology in the back panel that helps keep your back cool and dry.

Bottom Line: Lightweight, durable, and plenty of room for your hiking gear.

Camelbak is a good value, since you get a brand new reservoir each time you buy a pack

I have been using one of these for my local dayhikes and chose it for my recent Grand Canyon Rim-to-River dayhike, which was 17 miles and ~111 degrees. I have no complaints about the bag whatsoever. Roomy, but not too big (and I especially like the zip-up compression feature), lightweight, amd comfortable. The trekking pole cords are nice as well. I always feel like Camelbak is a good value, since you get a brand new reservoir each time you buy a pack, and in this case it's the new Antidote model in the three-liter size.

Can anyone confirm that the straps stay put? I have read in

Can anyone confirm that the straps stay put? I have read in reviews that you will have to tighten them every 10 minutes or so if you are running with it. This problem is the only thing holding me back. Appreciate your thoughts.

I don't run with mine, but I hike at a high-output pace, and I have never had to tighten the straps, other than sometimes intentionally as the load lightens just to snug it up.

Need something a little bigger

If I had filled up the water reservoir there would not have been much room left for much "stuff". I need "stuff" room. Rain jacket, etc.

It is not an enormous bag, but as Dean posted below, it is 1281 cu in (21 L)open, and 976 cu in (16 L)closed (compressed). Plenty of room for most 3-season dayhikes.

Is this really 1281 cu in? That seems very large.

Hey Dustin, the pictures are deceiving, but technically:

Total Capacity:
Open: 1281 cu in (21 L)
Closed: 976 cu in (16 L)

There's a zipper on the front that expands the internal space to the OPEN size...the pictures here show it zipped closed...

Trail running in Guatemala

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 22, 2011

I took this pack on a week long trail running adventure in Guatemala and LOVED it. It was big enough to take water for almost a whole day every day. I only had to refill on particularly long days when we were out over 8 hours or so. I generally carried an electrolyte bottled drink in the bag to supplement the water.

I was able to carry the full bladder, the extra bottle of electrolyte, food for the day and an extra layer and still didn't have to open the expandable compartment (my extra layer was VERY thin though).

When the bladder is completely full, you will find that it moves around a bit while you run. But, I was still able to run with it.

I read a review that said the straps would slip. Even with it fully loaded, that did no happen to me.

The pack is very comfortable. It did not rub me weird in any places.

Love this pack. Recommend highly.

Nice lightweight camelba

perfect for trail running competitions or long hikes. I can fit lots of stuff in it. The side pockets are great if you don't want to waste time taking out supplies. Fits good to my back and the design looks great.
