You'd rather not worry about BPA, but you still want a bottle that's easy to drink out of and that won't dent like many aluminum bottles. Grab the CamelBak 1L Better Bottle w/Bite Valve. CamelBak made the Better Bottle with a BPA-free copolyester material, and gave this one-liter bottle a flip-up bite valve that makes drinking easy and spill-free. The bite valve self-seals, so no water will leak out even if the Better Bottle tips over. Fill this bottle and stay hydrated on hikes, during long gym workouts, and at the bouldering crags.
I like the bottle, but I don't see the point of it. I've used Nalgenes for years and never had any complaints about the challenge of tilting a bottle to get water. The water tastes good and it's a different experience to drink from a straw, but why? Oh, and it's horrible to clean. I'm just going to stick to a Nalgene.
Have that works great. My second one (new, never been used) seems to have a blocked valve - I can't draw water through. Any suggestions on how to clear the valve or what might be blocking it - I removed the plastic covering from the bite tip.

Bisphenol-A free is good. i have never had problems with the bite valve. straw is a good thought so you dont have to tip the bottle up, but it doesn't work. after the first wash (on the top rack, which is acceptable according to the manufacturer) the straw came off the inside of the lid and will not stick. after the next wash (by hand) the seal around the inside of the lid leaks (presumably from the gentle dish soap?). after only 1 drop from less than 3 feet onto a semi hard surface, it has micro cracks all over the bottom of it, like a car windshield exposed to a swiftly moving 9-iron. it still works fine if you can use it in a setting where you can keep it upright, but that is not the use for which it was advertised. you could probably use it for climbing (as labeled) if it was covered in 3 layers of bubble wrap. i would not recommend using this product in any setting where you do not have access to a cup holder for storage. i would also recommend purchasing a carabiner for attaching it to your belt for those precarious times in which it could perilously fall to its demise from 36 inches. because of these less than minor factors it received 1 star. it is now impossible to drink from this vessel without it dripping on your shirt. it received 1 star because 0 is not an option, and it is still functional in that it prevents your beverage from spilling when sitting on the counter and you have no intention of drinking the aforementioned "contained" beverage. because of the above issues, i will be purchasing a nalgene bottle to take its place among my others. i know it's made from the same copolyester as nalgene, but nalgene must do something different in their manufacturing process. this camelbak turd was functional for less than 3 weeks. for those same reasons, i bought an osprey/nalgene 3liter hydration bladder (bomb-proof by the way) rather than a camelbak hydration system. maybe i got a bottle from a bad lot, but this thing is $15! I am not pretending like $15 is a whole lot of money, but you can find a one liter nalgene on sale for 6. the only thing left to say is "SERIOUSLY CAMELBAK??!!"
I would recommend utilizing CamelBak's "Got your back guarantee" and get a replacement bottle that you can use, or resell. Note, CamelBak is the ONLY company in hydration that gives you a Lifetime warranty on the entire system; pack, reservoir, delivery tube, bite valve etc. Hope this helps.
I have 3 of these bottles and have owned them over the past 1-2 years. I use them regularly
Cons 1. On 2 of the bottles, the tab that you press to flip the straw out have broken off. This is will normal use. I have met 2 other folks who have had the same problem. I called camelbak and they sent me free replacement lids 2. Bite-valve eventually developed a small tear. This decreased the amount of water I could drink at one time as air interfered with flow of water. Again, camelbak replaced this 3. MOLD MOLD MOLD MOLD MOLD. I know regular cleaning should prevent this, however, there are many parts, lots of small crevices, the tube is hard to clean without a proper tool, and the bite-valve has to be removed and cleaned with a q-tip. One of mine had so much mold, and I was in the middle of no-where, I ended up throwing it away :( 4. Ahh, this is the kicker. I am active duty military and am exposed to unpressurized aircraft on a routine basis. As we go up in altitude, the air that is trapped inside expands and pushes on the liquid inside. If not careful, when i flip the straw, the liquid would shoot out great distances and randomly hit people IN THE FACE, thus leading to akward moments with the commanding officer
I will move onto nalgene bottles to see if they are any better.
Pull it off, flip up the stem and soak the cap and bite valve in a pot of water with a couple tablespoons of regular bleach overnight. Rinse it off well and let it dry. No more scunge, disinfected, and the chlorine won't hurt you one bit. Every couple months or so, take a shower with it, and blast it out.
This water bottle isn't perfect, but it comes closest of any bottles that I have used. The flow rate is usually perfect for me. I have 6 or 7 of these bottles in the family and some have a slower rate than others. Go figure. No worries, though. If I get really thirsty I just remove the lid.
Pretty nice bottle, good to drink from while walking, and you have hands for it, but if I have only one hand for the bottle, I sometimes struggle to get the flip-up bite valve open. It is better than say a screw top, but pop tops are just easiest for me. The flow is a little poor, you really have to take a pull to get a good amount of water. Doesn't spill though, so it is good for the gym.
This is a great laternative to a Naglene. It's durable. The bite valve makes it easy for one hand usage. I have used and abused it (meaning..it rolled down a trail a few hundred feet on rocks. Plus more!)
Love the bit valve, but already used to it in my day hiking and mtn biking camelbak backpack. Refilled directly into it from streams & lakes after running the water through a Sweetwater microfilter and adding a few chlorine drops. Bit valve allows more water conservation. Fit my REI Internal Frame pack outer mesh pocket no problem.
But it holds a good amount of water and doesn't leak when thrown into a backpack. Does everything I want it to, and the water tastes good from it too. The only downside is the difficulty to clean if you put anything besides water in it.
I already have the .75L version of this bottle, but I wanted to have the choice to carry more water with me sometimes. These bottles are great, and I absolutely love the bite valve. Having it, instead of the regular screw-off cap, allows you to drink while moving without spilling all over yourself. Really nice on the treadmill and just walking around campus.
Hi,I was wondering whether there is much info about the toxicity of the camelbak drink bottles, i read something about BPAs. Is there lower levels of BPA's then other plastic bottles?cheers
BPA is not a (big) issue. don't be scared....http://www.factsonplastic.com/bisphenol-faqs/also, this bottle is BPA free, so even if you are worried, this bottle is totally safe... until they determine something else out that is bad for us..
I like everything about this bottle EXCEPT that it leaks all over the floorboard of my car or on the seat. So, it always has to be upright. Pain in the butt. It's the small air intake valve in the center of the lid that leaks, not the bite valve.
I love not having to tip this bottle back to drink, much more conducive to the professional work environment as well as anywhere else you need to tote a beverage. Practical and stylish, I have one in each size, you cannot go wrong with these guys!
I don't want to be mean, but I have abused my CamelBak. It has had more air-time than some pilots, and after some very hard landings, it remains ever-vigilant.
I do agree that it should have allowed for more water flow. When you seriously need H2O, you may have to open the top and bypass the Bite Valve.
I love the fact that I can drink this while off-roading or running on the treadmill. I also love that I don't have to unscrew anything to take a drink. If they could make these so they didn't leak while on their side, they would be perfect.
Perfect for Bikram sessions and to stay hydrated in the home/office. While some folks find the bite valve a bit of a challenge, I think it makes it easier to drink more water.
I'm sure someone will tell me to wash it more often, and I do (now)... but i used to use this bottle for a couple weeks, didn't even think to look inside the plastic parts. Mold!!!
Now I use it at home, wash and dry it out (completely by removing the straw and the bite-valve) about once a week.
Otherwise the bottle works well, easy to use, even my daughter was drinking out of this at 14 months old. I had the bottle in my car and it did leak a little bit when on its side.
I prefer the Nalgene Narrow mouth 32 oz bottle over this one for my needs.
This one does not fit in my cup-holder in my car, neither does my Nalgene for that matter.
this is by far the best bottle i have used. that is not to say it is the best bottle but the one i prefer and works the best for me. one draw back is keeping the water at a comfortable level. since the bottle is not insulated the water is pretty much what the temp is where you are. minor drawback in my opinion. people mention a "plastic" taste, i havent noticed. i like this bottle. highly recomend
I own several camelbak products and love them all. These bottles can be dropped and dropped without so much as a dent. No funky taste either...after washing before first use, of course.
I think I love this like I loved my bottle as a baby. I am a massage therapist and when my hands are oily while working I can pop up the straw and have a hands-free sip. Thanks again Camelback! PS: Don't add milk--only water.
BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a chemical compound commonly found in plastic drink and food containers. Small amounts of BPA could possibly leach out from containers and be ingested. There is much scientific debate regarding what levels are harmful to humans, though it is generally considered safe, and would thus not be considered as needing a recall. Here's more information:
http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/114/bpa and http://www.cdc.gov/exposurereport/pdf/factsheet_bisphenol.pdf.
I drink more water when I have this bottle around. I keep this size bottle at my desk to ensure I stay hydrated at work. I don't have to worry about any spills which is great beacuse I always spill :) It easy to use and doesn't spill what more could you ask for?
I have dropped my CamelBak from the top roof of my car; forgot it was there as i got in. It didn't dent. I have dropped it and it hasn't cracked. It has had many a some hard landings and has remains ever-vigilant. Good and tough! Two thumbs up.
I really does NEED for more water flow, twice as much so your veins don't pop while sipping. That is it's only flaw. That and...the 1L bottle comes in 4 plain colours while the 750ml bottles come in a wide variety of funky fun vibrant colours.
That and....the base of the 1L bottles and even the width could be made thinner. To fit car cup holders and one's bike holder. It should be just the same width as under the cap all the way down and the base could be decreased. Even if it makes the 1L bottle taller.
MORE BITE VALVE FLOW and 1L BOTTLES TO NEED TO COME IN MANY MORE COLOURS.
Does anyone know how one can get this feedback ot the product designers?
Rating 4/6. More 1L colours and more flow and this bottle would be a 6. It's the best that's out there and still...more room for improvement
I have a reputation of being as reliable as a two-year-old when it comes to spills from my water bottles. Now? I'm the Queen of Qleen. They didn't trust me until I demonstrated.
I'd never used a bottle with a straw on it, and certainly never used one with a soft biteable nipple. I bought the "fire" colored 1 L bottle. It took me a week or so to stop tipping it upside down to drink (I'm very slow as well as very clumsy).
I wish it maintained cold, but right now I have regained credibility (except with coffee).
Wonderful, fabulous, bottle. I just ordered 3 more! And why can I not have hot pink? I don't want to buy the .75 litre bottle. It won't work for me.
The only complaint I have with the bottle is that the lip that helps bring the drinking spout up needs to be made stronger. I had this bottle for about two weeks when I went to flip up the drinking spout and the lip broke. So now I have to use my finger to flip up the drinking spout. Other than that, the bottle is great.
I've been living with regular plastic drink bottles and refilling ugh! This is fantastic, not only safe but brilliant when driving the car as you don't have to tip your head back to drink. Will never buy anything else but perhaps the 1 litre next time, although the 750 seems fine just now. I love it and especially that you can buy parts even here in Australia.
I used to have just the screw top and i decided to upgrade to the bite valve version of the bottle. it's a nice bottle and the bite valve works well, my only complaint is that i can't get enough water through the valve when I'm trying to guzzle some down.
I've used this bottle quite a bit and I'm not impressed. What am I supposed to use it for? For any active activity this doesn't cut it. Too heavy. Doesn't hold a lot of water. You have to hold it upright for the straw to work. Too many parts to clean. Can only suck out a little water at a time. Awkward to use one-handed.
I would rather go with an old-school pop-top bottle or a hydration pack. In my opinion camelbak just overthought this one. I guess it looks OK if you're trying to impress someone at the dog park or office, but once you get it on the trail you realize what a pain it is.
I have two of these and use them constantly. They are great as long as the liquid does not drastically increase in temperature. If that happens the air from the empty space expands and they build up pressure and want to spurt a little when you open the valve. They really need to bring back the hydrate or die logo on them. Ever since they went BPA free I can't find it anywhere.
Our 7 year old loves this drink bottle. We got it for a holiday trip. It is spill proof, huge for thirsty work, has not broken yet and I am so happy it does not leak all over everything! The rest of the family is quite jealous.
1L is good all-around size vs .5L bottles. Bottom is large (not mine, but the bottle's) which can be a problem with your car's cup holders. If you're not familiar, bite valve is great.
I ordered this bottle because I love the 24oz, but I wanted a larger volume bottle. This bottle leaks and it is too big for my cars cup holder. I am very disappointed in this bottle.
Great bottle. Love the 1L size, fits my car cup holder (which adjusts...) and does not leak. The handle is great and I find myself enjoying my water. I am happy the bottle is now BPA FREE. I ordered each of my children the same bottle in the 500 ml size. A good buy!
I love this bottle. Keeps me refreshed and hydrated, and perfect for the outside when I am muddy and just need to flip the tap and suck away, instead of screwing off a lid or muddying up the valve pulling it open.
I have the Better Bottle in the 1L and .75L sizes and I love them. I'm a bit of a klutz, so I really like having the CamelBak bite valves so I don't spill on my computer or important papers. The 1L size is great for hot yoga, and with the bite valve I'm better about taking sips of water instead of guzzling it down and ending up with a stomach full of water. The .75L will fit in larger cup holders (1L is big) and if not the .5L might suit your cup holder just right. Now they're BPA free, so no excuse to not save plastic and money and bring your own water bottle!
