Burton Custom X Snowboard - Wide - 2008 BCS

Im going to continue with the fragile reviews. I ride a lot of Burton stuff and it is good but you do pay a premium for the name. The top clear coat flakes off really easily and the bottom scratches with not to much effort. That being said i love how the board rides and can handle a little bit of everything. I like to ride big mountains and powder and this board fits in well for those resort days when i dont need to use the split board. It is stable enough to handle groomers and some ice or mixed snow conditions. I would recommend this board but give it a 4 out of 5 because of the clear coat flaking off so easily.

I went with a 168cm, I'm 6'4" 230lbs. I have Cartel bindings from two years ago and they're super easy to put in the ICS slot. It's east to adjust you stance width, which is great. The board is infinitely stiffer than my older burton and the width works well for my size 14 boots. I rode early and chunked out a few piece of the base which was a bummer, and i ripped up the edges so it'll be interestnig to see how it repairs but the stainless steel is ideal. very light, as light as my old 160. I think if I could do it all over again I'd probably go with the 164cm, plus the blue looks better. my biggest concern was how well not ICS bindings would work and it is truly a non-issue, I would definitely buy this board again.

Rides nice when there are no core-shots, broken sidewalls, or peeling-off-edges.

I've been riding burtons for 7 seasons, and have been using their wide higher-end boards for a while. I had a 168 Canyon, a Baron, a Baron ES, and now the Custom X wide. All of the other boards I rode were more durable than this one, and after a few east-coast run-ins with rocks, the Custom-X wide was damaged quicker than any of the previous boards. I'm thinking that burton changed their manufacturing process or used lighter, but more fragile material on this years boards. I didn't hit any of the rocks any harder than I had before, but the damage was a lot more extensive. The board is essentially ruined now.

If you live in a place where you are unlikely to hit obstacles... go for it. The board allows the rider to ride hard, fast, and big... If you are on the east coast, get 2.

Great board. Can't say enough good things about it. Great pop, very agile for a wide board, edges tear through ice, and the graphics aren't obnoxious like some of the '09 boards and most of the '10 boards will be.
Don't worry about getting EST bindings if it isn't in your budget. The boards comes with some very solid converter discs that will attach your old bindings and still give you most of the EST benefits until you can upgrade to EST. The board is light, but not any lighter than the last few years, FWIW. The ICS probably adds a small amount of weight. My 164W weighed 7 lbs, FWIW.

I rode this board in the back bowls of Vail, knee deep in powder, as well as Aspen Highlands bowl (the one you hike 45 minutes up to). The board floats with no leg burn and rides smooth and has a surfy feel in powder. Love the board - hate the top sheet. It chips at the drop of a dime. It's superficial chips, but it's annoying. I owned the board one week and I have 10-12 different chips and scrapes on the top sheet and I was being VERY careful not to get it chipped. So, you can imagine what it will look like in a month or two when I stop caring about the topsheet. I plan on using black magic marker to hide the scratches/chips.

IMO Burton is one of the only manufacturers to have dialed a sidecut that works well with wider-waisted snowboards. For a wide deck, it's surprisingly fast edge to edge and flat out charges down the fall line - even when I neglect to keep her waxed.

This deck is a good time in the pipe and will solidly set down landings on the Breck Freeway triple line. Don't buy this board thinking it's a true all around that's going to press through rails and boxes - it was never built with that sort of flex in mind and won't respond as such no matter how hard you try.

If you're more of an all mountain rider who'd prefer to search out stashes, look for natural obstacles and throw some slashes that will get you into the white room, this is a worthwhile deck to pick up if not somewhat over priced. The board excels in the air when lapping the pipe or jump lines, but you should look elsewhere if jibbing is your thing.

You should have some margin of skill before shelling out for this high end deck. If you're a beginner, the Custom X is not forgiving and will most likely hinder your progress at honing your shred skills. If you're comfortable hauling ass around the mountain and like really standing on your edges when you're turning, she rarely washes out and will stand up to a fair bit of abuse. The shape is well adapted to riding deep snow and the added width gets you a little extra float. Again, the sidecut is worth noting. If you've spent too much time on wide boards that turn like 2x4's the Custom X will pleasantly change your outlook on having big feet.

It is so fragile. I've been riding Burton for about 8 years after switching from Libtech. This board is super light and stiff BUT the edge is like a piece of spaghetti. Within 6 days and two slow speed small rock hits it was all over. Sent it back to Burton to have them shoot me down. BEst board I ever had for 5 days riding, also the most expensive 5 day board ever.

I rode the board 6 times and snapped it (snapped it in half right across my front binding). I don't place a lot of faith in the structural integrity of this board. Best part was that I was outside my warranty by 3 months and Burton did NOTHING for me. Bunch of BS.

i just rode this board for the first time yesturday for 5 hours strait and i love it. super smooth from beginning to end. its crazy fast and super responsive. it grips ice very well and will leave you with no doubt when your riding. it almost does the ridding for you!
