    Batten down the hatches.

Gale-force winds and oncoming snow squalls have nothing on the fortress-like protection of the Burton Men's AK 3L Hover Gore-Tex Jacket. Equipped with the legendary waterproofing of a Gore-Tex 3-layer membrane, the Hover Jacket keeps you blissfully dry through the wettest storms and deepest powder when you're earning turns in the backcountry. Reinforcing the jacket against abuse, the 40D Gore Micro Grid Backer increases abrasion-resistance while speeding up the evaporation of built-up perspiration with its grid-like construction.

Fully sealed with Gore-Seam tape, this jacket prevents outside moisture from seeping through and dampening your inside layers. Zippered underarm vents regulate your core temperature on warmer spring days, especially when you're hiking in the backcountry. YKK water-resistant zippers protect the front-zip closure and pocket openings from leaks. Add in a removable powder skirt, jacket-to-pant interface, and powder gasket cuffs for the deep-snow protection desired by freeride enthusiasts and backcountry riders alike.

    Jacket made of armor

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Some background: I am very thorough with gear selection and spend a lot of time learning about the attributes of a coat so I can worry less about brand and buy the right thing for less. Here's what I considered for this coat and how it checks out:
    - Waterproof rating: this is 3L Goretex pro...about as good as you can get. It checks out at 20,000mm, which is the highest category.
    - Breathability rating: again, as good as you can get. It also checks out at 20,000g, which is the highest category. (for a primer on how these ratings work, check out this link: http://www.evo.com/waterproof-ratings-and-breathability-guide.aspx
    - Fit: true to size. Not too bulky, not to tight. Definitely not a fitted shape and is a little bit longer than normal coats (I'm a skier) but that's helpful for butt coverage.
    - Pit zips: excellent. Easy to open/close while on the go.
    - Pockets: 4 external (2 side hand, 2 chest), 1 internal for phone/iPod. Also, a nice perk is that the pocket pleats are on the outside of the coat. This means as you stuff it, the space the pocket occupies grows outside the coat, not inside...this means the jacket won't fit differently or get too tight when it's full.
    - Collar - nice high collar. This covers a lot of your face and is tapered away from your face so you don't get claustrophobic. I carry a full beard, clip a helmet and wear a neck warmer and can still zip up fully to protect my face from the elements.
    - Cuffs: this might be the best feature on the coat. There is an internal velcro cuff, to protect under your glove, and an external velcro cuff, to protect above your glove. When you lock everything down, NOTHING is getting in there.
    - Powder skirt: there is one and it's removable
    - Hood: this is the only short coming of this coat. It's a 3/4 hood. I prefer the big sweeping hoods you see on Rab or Arcteryx coats that fully protect your head from the elements. This hood is separated (good) but only covers up to the crown of the head.

In all, I highly recommend this coat. It's worth noting I got it on steep discount, so if you buy in July and know what you're looking for, you can get a great deal.

You will stay dry, comfortable and happy in this coat.

    Best SNOWBOARD made Gore-Tex Jacket

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: large

This jacket is great! I'm on my 3rd one now over the last 6 seasons. If your a snowboarder who wants to stick with a snowboard brand and want the best technical outwear you can get AK is gonna be your jam. These are well constructed, features are thoughtfully placed, and the jacket takes a beating. There are some other snowboard high end made snowboard brand jackets on the market, but none offer this level of breathabilty. All GORE-TEX is not the same. It really depends on what fabric the membrane is applied to and what kind of liner ( if any ) is in the garment. I tried some Volcom GORE-TEX jackets ( Baldface ) and it did not breath anywhere close to this Burton jacket.

The jacket is roomy, with ample room to layer and not some stupid skinny cut that would hinder you if you're splitboarding. I split 40+ days a year with 10-15 resort days thrown in there as well and this jacket holds up. I have never had any quality issues.

    Get one, you'll like it!

I'm backcountry AT skier but like your chest pockets for skins. 1. Does The Hover jacket have same chest pockets as the Freebird? 2. How do both jackets compare for backcountry skiing?
    3. Do they accommodate helmet in hood? Do they have visors?
    4. Are the pit zips open to inside or is there another lining/barrier to powder with pit zips open?
    5. I'm 42 chest, 34 waist. 35 sleeve 5'7" 165 lbs. Am I a medium or large. I need room for a puffy layer underneath.
    6. Are the sleeve gators?

    1. Not sure

    2. Works great, pleanty of room for layering, with zips. Very technical jacket.

    3. Hood is small, not possible to fit helmet.

    4. Pits open directly, no mesh or barrier.

    5. I have no idea, mine runs a little big though.

    6. Not on mine.

Side note, the internal layer has many delamination spots that are fairly large and plenty of seams have become untaped over time. Overall very nice jacket but the internal seams and delamination has bummed me for such an expensive jacket.
