Description

Not scared of a silly little full-on blizzard.

Taunt Old Man Winter and laugh at his feeble attempts to ruin your day with harsh winter storms when you're wearing the Burton AK 2L Cyclic Gore-Tex Jacket. Two-layer Gore-Tex fabric protects against everything from blinding snow and hellish hail to freak rainstorms, and it's built tough, so it'll hold up to abuse from rocky terrain and hidden branches. If you don't believe us, then just take a look at the lifetime warranty. Burton ain't messing around.

Guaranteed waterproof breathable two-layer Gore-Tex fabric shields you from the elements from the outside while allowing vapor to escape so you don't get drenched with sweat on the inside, and it's mapped with taffeta and closed cell mesh lining to promote breathability and wick moisture. Fully taped seams with Gore-Seam tape and water-resistant YKK zippers prevent moisture from seeping in through the cracks. The AK fit features engineered articulation to allow it to move naturally with your body for unrestricted mobility and it allows room to layer underneath without being baggy or bulky.

Zippered underarm vents let you dump heat when you're huffing it to the peak, and the contoured hood with a micro-adjust cinch shields your head from the storm when the weather suddenly turns on you.  A removable stretch powder skirt with jacket-to-pant interface allows you to link up to your Burton pants to keep snow out on when nature rewards you with the deep stuff.

great gore-tex shell with minor issues

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

I bought this jacket near the end of the 2013 season and used it for lift and backcountry tripes alike on both coasts in the 2013/2014 season. I was upgrading from a dryride Burton coat that fit a bit too large for my liking. My thinking was that this coat would allow me to upgrade my waterproofness and also allow for a slimmer and smaller fit which would be better for skinning and hiking.

I was beyond impressed with the waterproofing ability of the jacket, which should come as no surprise with Gore-Tex. The breathability, while not incredible, was good enough to hike and skin in without getting too hot. I liked the placement of the pockets and also the soft lining of the hand pockets.

Overall, I really liked the jacket. However, I did have a few problems.

The first problem, while not a huge one, was the weight of the jacket. Compared to another brand's $380 shell, this weights much more. But we're still only talking ounces, so not a big deal.

The second issue is the hood. It has a well-constructed hood, but not for over-helmet use. I rarely go out without a helmet, so this was a deal breaker.

The third issue is the fit. While Burton advertises this as the performance oriented, articulated fit, it's still baggy. As a 6', 165 lb guy, I don't have a big build. In a size medium it was very large around the chest and about 2 inches longer than I would have preferred. With that said, this might work for some people. I prefer less bulk when snowboarding, but realize it's not the typical snowboarding fashion.

Overall, I would and have raved to friends about the technical quality of the jacket. Some of the features are a bit lacking, and the fit is a bit too large, but it might work for you. If you're someone who isn't looking for a helmet compatible hood and you like a looser fit, go for it. You won't regret your purchase.
